People are referring to the story line and struggles that the characters are going through. Yes many things are over the top, but that is what makes good tv. This is a theatrical show for people that are fans of broadway and it allows escapism. For many, these characters or situations are realistic

Lea Michele did broadway all the way through high school and the others who did it and look at them now. @kiikat It's more realistic than anything churned out by Disney(particularly HSM). And it's a tv musical...singing and dancing is the point, otherwise it'd be a show simply about high school. And not all the song are 'super happy'...in fact, barely a fourth of their songs is about happiness. Most are to express whatever emotion the characters are feeling.
