@MusicManAustralia@MusicManAustralia I got one on Christmas. Mine was around £45-50 and is surprisingly good. Most cheap ones you have to tune every 5 seconds but it has been great so far. They're a well-known trustworthy brand. The description for it should mention whether it is better for beginners or experts but if it doesn't then you may be able to get an idea from the price :)

@MrRabbitass What size 'ukulele are you looking for? A great tenor which is just cheaper than your budget is the Mahalo U320T which is a tenor. You could get a decent Kala 'ukulele for that price as well.
@alexdarlo Any size is suitable, it just depends on what your budget is and what you really want. I would get a concert personally as a first uke. It is in between a soprano and tenor in terms of cost and sound.
@alexdarlo Yeah, I'm from England also. I don't recommend to strongly getting an 'ukulele for less than £30 ; for a soprano. But if you cannot get much more in your budget I would go for a soprano.
@alexdarlo it doesn't really matter what size you get. the soprano which is the cheapest and smallest. the concert which is a popular size and is pretty expensive (i got mine for $100). then the list goes on and on which is tenor and baritone (they're really expensive). I highly recommend for you to get a concert for beginners. They might be pretty expensive, but if you order online they're cheaper. You can go on websites like ebay, amazon, guitar center, or smash ash.
when I first saw you I thought you were Hawaiian, and maybe you are, but you couldn't pronounce Iz's name right. And the natives don't play the ukulele with a pick..
im not trying to be a troll or any thing... but you sed that the second and third chords are E minor, and a guitarist new to ukulele trying to figure out, maby i heard wrong? im just trying to understand... 0:31 and 0:44
Thanks for the nice tutorial. I'm an old piano playing dude, but recently picked up a Kohala concert ukulele at Costco ($99 comes with case and digital tuner). Although I can play some guitar, I find the ukulele more manageable, even though it is less logical. The piano is such a simple linear arrangement. I still haven't been able to capture the multilinearity of string instruments in my brain- I'm just learning chords for now. Thanks again. Subscribed!
When you played the chords separately i thought "Oh god! doesn't sound nothing like it" but i just realized when you played it all together, it was me talking a load of rubbish. You are a true inspiration to me and hopefully others, Thank god you are on youtube, because if you weren't i would be struggling like hell, so thanks dude. And as us English people say...........You're a LEGEND!
@TheTrumpetWhoCould I have a Kanilea tenor that I completely love - I wanted to get my son a tenor and they guys at Kanilea suggested Makala -- kalaukulele. com /Kala_Makala.asp. I think I paid $60 and it really is a good Ukulele. -- Sims
I just bought at Kala Brand for $60 in Honolulu and it's awesome. I don't play the ukulele (yet) or the guitar but it's the one recommended for beginners and it sounds just great to me!
I have been playing guitar since the beginning of summer and i am a quick learner with chords and i do some finger picking songs. Recently i was thinking about getting an uke. Mostly every video i have watched with someone playing the uke, the people have a Tenor. So i am thinking about getting that. Is that a good uke to start out with? I've found some affordable Lanikai Tenors on amazon and craigslist. So yeah i was just wondering if i should get a Tenor or a Classic or Soprano
@ItalianMafia36 I think you meant Tenor, Concert or Soprano. First of all, I would suggest, if you can, going to a music store and trying out the different sizes. Tenors seem to be the favourite of most professional musicians. I've been told it's because of the bigger fret board, which allows for finger picking. Personally, I prefer Tenors as well (the size of the Uke in that video), but I do own a Soprano, and plan to buy a Concert eventually.
@ItalianMafia36 I meant to say tenors "make finger picking easier". Another thing, I want to mention, while you're likely going to be trading in and upgrading Ukes as you get more into it and increase in skill level, my personal advice about it, if you're starting off already thinking that you will definitely get in to it (as opposed to dropping it a month from now) is to buy as expensive as you can afford. There are some great solid Koa ukes that go for as cheap as $600 if you can manage that.
@asteadyrain *Solid Koa Ukuleles* can be as cheap as $600. Most of them are $1000+. Solid Koa is the Cadillac of Ukuleles. Almost all are handmade in Hawaii (as opposed to mass produced in China). I own a Solid Mahogany Tenor Uke (Fender's Pa'ina), and a Laminate Koa Soprano (Kala). Both are in the $250-350 range. If you want to go even cheaper - as in, $50-$100, there are budget brands that make laminate mahogany ukes.
@Mav79 With some really nice ones going for $3k. I shopped for a long time for mine and ended up with a mid-range one in Solid Acacia Concert (koa cousin) by Kala for $299 with case, tuner and extra strings. I agree however, better to get a better quality Uke to begin with than to find your tourist model just doesn't sound good.
@2JobsStillPoorUSA For sure. I'm kind of saving up for a Kanile'a K-1 Tenor, which goes for $1,200 I think. That or a Kamaka Tenor, which is just about the same price. The sound board on my Fender is actually cracked, so I'm definitely going to be replacing that sometime soon. And I don't play my Kala soprano in public (I actually have a problem with Kala's intonation).. So hopefully soon, I'll be playing a more substantial uke...
if ya like using a guitar pic to play that dadberned ukulele do it bro- they aint no rules come with my ukulele that says ya gotta play with a certain type of anything..people who follow these invisible guidelines are flat and expressionless-music is an art- there are no rules !! what would have happened if someone would have told jimi hendrix "hey- you cant do that upside down !!"
Thankyou so much, i have recently purchased a Ukulele and you have made learning it very simple! I hope you continue to learn and teach ,more songs :)

In response to the picks being used for ukuleles... I use the felt picks all the time. There are ukulele picks that work, but I also use a felt mandolin pick at times. If I can't find a pick I like then I have also used a thin guitar pick. I have even been known to use a capo for the uke!
@lilith9000 Right on. You have people who complain about how other people play the Uke, and then you can really tell those who actually gig with the uke on a regular basis... On that note, what kind of capo do you use for your Uke? I picked up a mandolin capo about a year ago and it works amazing on my tenor.
@Mav79 I also use a mandolin capo on my ukes. I have a tenor and several sopranos and it works perfectly! The uke is so fun to play and versatile that is if great to make it your own. People used to laugh when I said I played the uke, now I have folks asking me where it is when they see me and if I will be playing.
no matter what you use to play with its still a ukulele right? the same as if you use a penny to strum a guitar right? its still a guitar. but with a pick you get a cleaner sound if you dont if gives it a more authentic sound.. and for "john12396792" if you cant spell dont try to crap talk someone you moron!! gosh some poeple are just the stupidest!!! and thnx for the lesson your a good teacher..
@gabsmusician You wrote: "and for "john12396792" if you cant spell dont try to crap talk someone you moron!! gosh some poeple are just the stupidest!!! and thnx for the lesson your a good teacher.."
Your is a possessive adjective. It describes a noun by telling us to whom it belongs, as in, "I hate your face." You're is actually a contraction of "you are," as in "You're a dumbass."
@mediacommand Actually, since we're getting technical here. "Your" is another form of the pronoun "You", which also makes it a pronoun. It is the form for the "Possessive Case", which is why it can function as an adjective. Other cases that pronoun "You" are "Nominative" - typically, the subject/doer of a verb, and "Accusative" - the object/receiver of the verbal action. In those other cases though, the pronoun does not change form, like it obviously does for the possessive case.
Chris, I hope someday I will be able to play this lovely song. I am new to playing any instrument, don't read music and am learning. Your video helps so much! you rock!!
you don't have to be so angry i was just pointing it out because i play with more than a dozen people and picks are very hard to use in the cases of chunking (that's an opinion) and with experience i never seen anyone play a ukulele with a pick until now.
ps. i didn't know you could use felt picks for an uke and for UWPvid16.... i was looking up the strum pattern not the whole song
Thanks bud, helps me alot on understanding how to play, p.s whats the comments about pick/no pick rubbish? there is only a slight sound diffrence between the two, surely you should use whatever feels most conmfortable? regards Dean
@deanmichaelcook Comments regarding me using a guitar (plastic) pick is technically right.. I shouldn't have done it. Comments saying never to use any picks with a ukulele is wrong, there are special picks made for specifically for ukuleles, they're made out of hard felt.
I agree with Mav79, using a guitar pick doesn't work well because it's meant for steel strings; if you don't want to have to buy a special felt pick, a cheapy way to do it is to take scotch tape, fold it upon itself into a square, and keep wrapping it around itself until you have a rather rigid square of scotch tape. I can't strum, so this is what I use, and it works great! Experiment with the rigidness by adding different layers till you find the sound that works for you.
I'm actually trying to learn this song haha I just picked up my first Ukulele today and I want to learn this song first as a tribute to Iz and this vid is really helping :P
great video and very helpful I don't understand how people could hit the dislike button... and btw I don't think your voice is bad at all.. is there a hawaiin who CANT sing??
This is just brilliant! Although I keep having to stop the video to retune as I only got my Ukulele two days ago and the tuning doesn't hold! Hopefully I will learn it once the thing stays in tune!

Other cases that pronoun "You" are "Nominative" - typically, the subject/doer of a verb, and "Accusative" - the object/receiver of the verbal action. In those other cases though, the pronoun does not change form, like it obviously does for the possessive case.

Hey Iz..What stum pattern do you use. great job by the way. Nice voice too. As was asked..What ukulele are you using if you don't mind telling us.

youre the best teacher ever! i just got my uke yesterday and i can play this song thank you so much
moofanator 7 months ago
you don't have to be so angry i was just pointing it out because i play with more than a dozen people and picks are very hard to use in the cases of chunking (that's an opinion) and with experience i never seen anyone play a ukulele with a pick until now.
ps. i didn't know you could use felt picks for an uke and for UWPvid16.... i was looking up the strum pattern not the whole song

Thanks bud, helps me alot on understanding how to play, p.s whats the comments about pick/no pick rubbish? there is only a slight sound diffrence between the two, surely you should use whatever feels most conmfortable? regards Dean
deanmichaelcook 8 months ago 8
@deanmichaelcook Comments regarding me using a guitar (plastic) pick is technically right.. I shouldn't have done it. Comments saying never to use any picks with a ukulele is wrong, there are special picks made for specifically for ukuleles, they're made out of hard felt.
Mav79 8 months ago
@deanmichaelcook
Experiment with the rigidness by adding different layers till you find the sound that works for you.

is this strumming pattern the same for the entire song. Your version sounds really good. I'm new at this and I can't figure out strumming patterns.

do i play that pattern for every chord?

No offense to you, good sir, but I'm confident that this strumming pattern isn't right
