@Roach19691 I always wanted to be like Jacques Cousteau and be an Oceanographer, back then we had him and the wild kingdom on tv. No vhs, no pc's, it was a great time to be alive. I wish I had never gone to see Jaws, I might have lived my dream.
John Denver was my first favorite singer. I loved him by the time I was 7. I am 44 now and still love to hear his lovely voice and insightful lyrics. Long live JD!!!
I can remember watching Jacques Cousteau on t.v. when I was a child and being absolutely enthralled at the amazing images he and his team produced. What a fitting tribute...to John and Jacques!
I heard this song on my radio the other day for the first time and i completly forgot how good John Denver was now i`ll have to go out and his Cd`s what a voice he will be missed
Its a pity that John Denver could not put into words what it feels like to fly as well as he did for sailing on the ocean. They died under very different circumstances.
We owe so much to Cousteau for bringing the sea into our lives. He was one of the first to show how we are screwing up our world. Unfortunatly it doesn't seam like we are paying attention any more.A salute to John Denver for helping show the world thru his song that nature is important. May we all get off our butts and work for nature.
Honestly I love this song. I am 14 and John Denver is one of my favorite singers. I just can't stand the rap and auto tuned crap of nowadays. All my favorite bands/ singers are from the 40s-90s. Because that was the time music was actually good.
@zipcounty You just made my day my friend. I am 17 years old and I really thought I was the only teenager who hates 'rap and auto tuned crap' and loves this kind of music.
@MrPindakaasAlien Oh no, Trust me you are not the only one. There are many others out there. A friend of mine (10bobster10) likes it too. Not as much as me but he still enjoys great music. And there also many other people I know who are teenagers that love him also.
@MrPindakaasAlien Wow you must be a real dumbfuck if you think youre the only fucking person under the age of 20 on the planet that does not listen to auto tune and rap.
@zipcounty Hey Matthijis why don't you open your eyes and get out from under your rock and see that there are young people out there who do listen to older music, not to look cool, not to stand out, but because it is the type of music they love. And honestly when I first wrote that comment two months ago I had no idea I was going to make top comment. And really I didn't care. I was just showing my respect for the video.
@zipcounty This is exactly what I mean.. I dont give a shit about your age. You want respect because you're young, but listening to old music. Don't get me wrong, I love the music, but I really couldn't care less about how old you are.

only John Denver could do justice to Jaques Cousteau and Calypso. The world will always, always be a lesser place without John's angelic voice lifting us up with new songs.Absolute genius, no other like him. I miss him so much, as do millions of others.
i love John Denver and im a teenager.... if you dont think i can love My Chemical Romance, Nickleback, and 3 Doors Down, along with Toby Keith and Alan Jackson then your wrong... but if you think i cant love them along with John Denver, Kansas, Journey and Johnny Horton then your DEAD wrong... i can and will love them all :D
Again my belief that the French have the secrets, obviously John appreciated Jacques and what was maybe the greatest adventure on life. Here is to John and to Jacques!
I love John Denver...when I was 25 I was given tickets to one of his concerts...I really didn't want to go because it was John Denver...was I ever surprised...my favorite concert of all time....RIP
I love John Denver...when I was 25 I was given tickets to one of his concerts...I really didn't want to go because it was John Denver...was I ever surprised...my favorite concert of all time....
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.
@kayaker77 The last I've heard was that Jacques Cousteau's son (Phillipe?) had continued the legacy of aquatic research on the Calypso that his father had devoted so many years of his life.....
I saw John in concert in 1975. My whole family are John Denver fans. My aunt and uncle gave me a ticket to see him as a graduation present. We were third row middle and it was a marvelous concert. He introduced Calypso at that concert. The video footage looks very similar to what I remember seeing. We still love listening to John. My uncle requested Poems, Prayers & Promises be played at his eulogy and it was.
some years back here in norfolk va we had the cousteau soceity.sometimes the calypso would be tied up here it was a really cool little ship.even had a small helicopter on deck.
Both Jacques Cousteau and John Denver left us in 1997. Two, fantastic wonderful people. If people were more like them the world would be a better place.
I'm old enough to remember The Undersea World Of Jacques Cousteau and Mutual Of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. It was a time when entertainment on T.V. also meant that you got to learn something too. Nobody got booted of an island or did dumb s**t to get to work for Donald Trump.
This man and his sons are the very reason why we know what we do of the seas and oceans. Whether you choose to believe it or not, life came from the sea and we all hear its call. Preserve it, use it well for our very existance comes from this vast body of water we know so little about. Rest Well Jacque . Ladies, AND gents....take to your boats. A HUGE challenge awaits us.
I remember watching Jaques as a kid....we had wonderful television back in the 60's and 70's. So sad, that some of this scenery in this vid is no long there!
What a beautiful and powerful video. I followed Cousteau's remarkable life journey for years. The ocean has always held a deep fascination for me and I learned so much from Cousteau's films of the creatures of the sea. John Denver always always touches my heart sing but this song has been one of my favourites because of my connection with Coustea. My thanks to the person who sent it to me.
When I was young, I would put on this song, close my eyes and twirl in the living room, imagining that I was standing on the prow of the calypso. One of the most wonderful songs ever made!
Most of you posting here must be very young. This song is a tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the french Oceanographer. His boat was the Famous Calypso. Listen closely to the lyrics. In the 70's there would be National Geographic specials on TV featuring Cousteau and his crew of divers/oceanographers. Those were some of the best specials on TV. You can probably buy some DVD's of those specials
First time hearing this track and I thought I had heard all of John's music. Interesting that it's about a boat. I suppose beauty can be found everywhere if we only open our eyes and hearts...
@DeedleDeedleDumplin The Calypso was Jacques Cousteau's ship and he taught us more about the ocean than anyone had known!! Loved his specials on tv and always learned something, too!
Since I was an infant, and for ALL of my life, I will never, ever be able to get enough of this song, and there is no conceivable volume that could possibly be of sufficient decibel. Both John and Jacques were amazing. One of the most stunning songs ever written or performed. I am grateful to have been raised on such beautiful music.
This song helped me accept that it was not silly or crazy to sell everything I one and buy a sail boat. Sailing the world, one bottle of rum at a time.
What a perfect song by John Denver to the tribute of the human spirit in contemplating the beauty of God's creation! And I love this music with the beautiful vocals! Peace and Love, BobbyK miss you John! :+)
I've listened to John Denver since I was 4. Every year when we went camping, we'd listen to him, Gordon Lightfoot, Neil Diamond, America, Bread, etc.
Now, at age 18, through all the progressive metal, heavy metal, pop punk, punk, whatever I listen to these days, artists like John Denver still manages to bring tears to my eyes.
It's such a shame he died so young. His songs about nature and beauty were inspirational to most. Leagues away from the crap they sing today.
I grew up with my dad playing his guitar to JD every Friday evening. Whether I was going out, or coming in, John was playing on the stereo. Now I am 48 and cherish every memory related to my dad and John Denver. What a gifted man. When God takes people who are young, I believe he needs them in Heaven. God clearly touched John and is using him today.
@sbacoach Amen! I am 46, and grew up listening to John Denver and enjoying watching Jacques Cousteau every week - I cannot remember a time when I've listened to this song and had tears eventually streaming down my cheeks. I am a naturalist, a muscian, and I love all things beautiful that God has blessed us with.
@TheClassicalflute I'm 20 and my dad grew up listening to john denver and now i know it very well also. Every time i head out west to the rocky mountains i bring john denver along for the ride
I wish everyone would just leave comments about the video at hand and leave out all the bickering. Though I am not a fan of the young Mr. Bieber, I believe there is room for all types of music. I am a huge fan of John Denver and have been since I was a kid. Today, as in my younger days, I find solace in his music. The quality of his lyrics and the clarity of his voice project an honesty and passion not found in most music today. Who doesn't smell the salt air when listening to Calypso?
Could we not do this fighting? This isn't what we should be doing on John Denver's comments section. It's disrespectful to this man who was peaceful and caring. How about some love?
I love you John and miss you. I agree with the comment that no one can yodel like John ;-) And I'm so thankful I was able to see him in concert. I had my toddler and baby in tow. John handled the jabber and crying with grace and humor. It was a fun family concert. He was a one of a kind.
Please have respect for the legends that have passed on.This man had more talent in his one pinky then maybe you would have in your whole entire life..I was born in 72 but I know what is real music when I hear it..I can't belive ppl would come on here and accuse other's of doing coke..Did you know this man perosnally?! where you enjoying it w/ him?! Enjoy the music and shut up,just sayin!! Peace...RI.P. John..
@setenteromusic - I AM SO WITH YOU ON YOUR COMMENT, I AM A 54 YEAR OLD LADY WHO WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO GROW UP WITH ALL THIS GREAT MUSIC, I ALSO GREW UP WATCHING JACQUES COUSTEAU'S UNDERWATER WONDERS. OH OUR CHILDREN NO NOT WHAT THEY HAVE MISSED, BUT STOP BY MY CHANNEL FROSTMOON50 IF YOU WANT TO HEAR WHAT YOU'VE MISSED FOR I AM COLLECTING EVERY SONG I CAN GET MY HANDS ON! SAIL ON!!!! FROSTY

only John Denver could do justice to Jaques Cousteau and Calypso. The world will always, always be a lesser place without John's angelic voice lifting us up with new songs.Absolute genius, no other like him. I miss him so much, as do millions of others.

Hope2009pc 9 months ago
Most of you posting here must be very young. This song is a tribute to Jacques-Yves Cousteau, the french Oceanographer. His boat was the Famous Calypso. Listen closely to the lyrics. In the 70's there would be National Geographic specials on TV featuring Cousteau and his crew of divers/oceanographers. Those were some of the best specials on TV. You can probably buy some DVD's of those specials

First time hearing this track and I thought I had heard all of John's music. Interesting that it's about a boat. I suppose beauty can be found everywhere if we only open our eyes and hearts...
DeedleDeedleDumplin 9 months ago
@DeedleDeedleDumplin The Calypso was Jacques Cousteau's ship and he taught us more about the ocean than anyone had known!! Loved his specials on tv and always learned something, too!
scottygirlify 8 months ago
@scottygirlify Thanx for the information. It's understandable that Denver would sing about this boat. His love for nature was evident.
DeedleDeedleDumplin 8 months ago
They younger generation of people today do not realise the importance of the Calypso and its crew and how new and groundbreaking its adventures were.
Captured so well in this song, probably the only love song about a boat ever recorded.

MrSuperJ69 10 months ago
Could we not do this fighting? This isn't what we should be doing on John Denver's comments section. It's disrespectful to this man who was peaceful and caring. How about some love?
I love you John and miss you. I agree with the comment that no one can yodel like John ;-) And I'm so thankful I was able to see him in concert. I had my toddler and baby in tow. John handled the jabber and crying with grace and humor. It was a fun family concert. He was a one of a kind.
