People have done that to me they make comments about Arabics being terrorists and one of my best friends was like "we should kill them all"... I stopped looked at him and said dude I'm Arabic. He lost all his color. He apologized and said I thought you were black and white? And because he had also made a racist comment about latino's I ran down the list of my races and he was dumbfounded. I love every part of my mom and dad I can't handle letting someone trash talk my heritage.
Uggg I'm so sorry ppl are so ignorant! I am half irish half costa rican which basically means Anglo Caucasoid, and mongoloid like you. I get all sorts of odd comments, and have my whole life. Half Asian, persian, Greek Italian, Jewish, Latina. I think it ha to do with Anglo cultures obsession with needing to be able to categorize everyone neatly into one box. My son is completely Irish looking with blue eyes and reddish hair and looks just like me!! (in terms of physical features.). Ppl as

I can certainly understand your frustration with this issue. Our notion of "race" is based upon what one's appearance is. If someone's phenotypic attributes evince what some may consider "White", then you will be regarded as such. However, the problem with this is, is that not all of our genes are being accurately reflected through our morphological traits. As only a limited number are responsible for phenotype expression.
So even if you resembled Brad Pitt, that still wouldn't preclude you from carrying dormant Non-European alleles. To me, you look like an intermediate between a European and a Southeast Asian.
You don't look White. You look like a light-skinned Caucasoid-Mongoloid mix, just as you are. Lots of "white" Latin Americans look like you, when they're really mestizos.
If people say you look white then they're morons who don't understand race and have terrible judgment.
you dont look white to me child ..you mostly look human ,Iam mixed & people think Iam white or latin ,Iam Black & white , Iam I they way I look ,Iam human that it
@kat21sd I understand why people would want to emphasize that we are all a part of the human race. Of course we are. But the way I see it, saying we're all human also serves to erase our individuality and uniqueness. It erases culture, ethnicity, gender, sexuality, religion... I think the uniqueness of all our diversity is just as important as our unity as a species.
As such it is your cultural as well as ethnic duty to use it as much or as little as you need too. Remember that most European immigrants in America were more than willing to hide their ethnicity in order to gain advantage in their adopted country that is until it was prudent to reveal the truth to others. I believe the same applies to people of mixed race.
Good luck with all your endeavors and thanks for sharing!
@MrAnthonyRizzo The way I see it, whether I like it or not, I benefit from white privilege. But, just because I CAN benefit, doesn't mean I ALWAYS should. When I meet people, I don't always "come out" as Eurasian, unless it comes up in conversation. If I'm in one of those rare situations where I know for certain passing will help me and outing myself will hurt me (such as hearing anti-Asian racism), I'll stay quiet and pass.
@kittyeggrolls Your welcome! One more thought on coming out. People inevitably ask me, “What are you?” This doesn’t mean that I like giving them an answer. I would much rather keep my very mixed racial background to myself and let them draw their own conclusion. The way I see it. I don’t go around asking people about their ethnic background then why the heck should they care about mine? In a way it is rude for them to even ask seeing as it doesn’t really concern them.
Honestly, be the best you that you can be and let them guess if they get the inkling to do so and assume whatever if they don’t ask. It doesn’t change you either way. You are still you.
It is probably easier for you to take advantage of your white privilege then it is of your Asian privilege. However whenever you can take advantage of either don’t hesitate to do so. Privilege may not be a birthright but being of mixed race for you certainly is.
It is not a birth right and if you are privileged then it is your duty to be careful with that privilege and take advantage of it when you can. I think of my plural identity as a privilege when I can use it to my advantage. You should feel no different.
This brings me to your question about white privilege. The words white and privilege are not bad words apart from each other so why should they be offensive together? I think it is important to understand the fragile nature of privilege. To be privileged is to be fortunate.
I myself come from a long line of mixing of races and cultures. Nobody and I do mean nobody in my bloodlines has been pure anything for the past 250 years. The question I get the most is, “What are you?” This is expected. People want to know what buttons not to press. It can actually work in my favor because I can reasonably pass for almost anything.
Of all the things you said I find most poignant, “Nothing will make you more aware of white privilege than having it one moment and loosing it the next.” It makes me wonder how much that awareness has an affect on your decision to reveal your mixed heritage or not to reveal it.
Haha dude I can relate to you, sort of. I live in the US, all of my grandparents were immigrants from Italy so I am 100% Italian. Half of my family is from Sicily so I have very tan skin, and I tan extremely easy. I live in Massachusetts where everyone is white so I kinda stick out a little. I have a rounder face and black hair. Most people ask me if I am Mexican/ Indian/ Asian/ African. They are all shocked when I tell them Italian! Its weird but actually, I find it a little funny.
@kittyeggrolls My town is like 97% or somewhere around that percent european (white) so being a very tan person, I do stick out among the crowd. I just think people where I live aren't exposed to other ethnicities so they assume anything darker than peachy white to be black. I don't consider myself white (even though Italian is grouped in the 'white' category) because of my coloring and I couldn't be more glad I wasn't really white! Then I'd have to worry about sun burns and skin cancer.....
I think you should thank god you look more white than asian. That being said, the moment I saw you I thought u were deffo not 100% white!
