@Basketball80 people also forget that America was founded by a specific set of people that left England for religious freedom, but only for freedom for their religion. They had no religious tolerance and would be ashamed of what America looks like now.
WOW look at everybody who gave you a negative comment?? For suggesting that we are a Christian nation and follow the "basics" of the 10 commandments. Obama is a negative influence on the American people to say the least. HE is suppose to LEAD us? Where? Into a ditch (that's what a Christian nation would assume)
Since America is "no longer Christian", where does the government or anyone else get their ideas of morality? I mean Who was it that said, we should not kill, lie, steal, etc.? Last I looked it was, YES, the Jewish and Christian God. So why isn't murder and theft, etc. allowed in the USA? If the true meaning of church & state separation is what the "modern" interpretation suggests, why are men and women in prison, being punished for laws that were originally instituted by God?
Christianity is based on God the Son, Yeshua (Jesus Christ). This is the doctrine that needs to be taught. All "Christian" religions have this in common. This is the doctrine America was built upon.
Do a search on Black Theology by Dr. Cone This may interest you what doctrine Obama is under.
I'd like to know what he thinks is so radical about the Sermon on the Mount. The principles taught there all sound like basic American family values to me, not specific to any religion. The beattitudes suggest being humble, merciful, peacemakers. Murder, adultery, divorce except for unfaithfulness, & swearing, are spoken against. Loving our enemies and giving to the needy are good things. Praying and fasting in private, treasuring relationships more than possessions, & not judging are good.
The answer is simple, Senator Obama, we will teach and live by the teachings of Jesuschrist which are found in His Holy Word. The Old and New Testament.
Wow, speachless. Senator Obama, how do you reconcile darkness with light? This is evidence that we are soon to experience the judgement of the living. God's grace will not tolerate no more the "flip, flop" of the human heart. either God is God, or Humanism or its radical ideals are the way to follow. This world will be polorized into two bands. Those who follow and obey the Creator of Heaven n earth and those who hold dear these radical thinking ( I have no problem with it. It will never solve..
Wow,speachless...In other words, people, GOD will have to adjust himself to our radical society of our century. This only prove to me how near we are to the judgement of the living. Soon this world, planet, society will be polorized into two. Those who follow and live by the word of the Living God, and those who will shape "god" to their radical ideals that comfort to their radical mind set. Wow, how beautiful this is shaping. To God be the Glory. Come Lord Jesus!
the poles might say 50%, but the polls say 90%. There's a reason half of even John Kerry's supporters believe that humans appeared on the planet in our current form.
i am going to pray for him. all of that was under the law before jesus christ. that was a different time period. it isn't the same now nor does god want it to be. that is like saying the bathrooms should be white only! a different time period and different laws! he should get educated about the bible before he talks about it.
Every person is the sum of their experiences. Judgment, morality, empathy for many is based on ones religious experiences/influences. Granted, an individual maybe should not be judged based on what religion he embraces. But, the idea to dictate that religion has no place in politics makes as much sense as to assert that religion must have place in politics... Mandating the "NO" or the "MUST" causes a problem to the ideal of our system of government.
Religion has always been code word for POLITICS. Faith is different. Faith is believing in something when no one else does. People should practice their faith in their designated cultures but religion is POLITICS. Faith never leads us to kill, cheat, lie, murder, rape, and ignore. Religion on the other hand is politics which involves all of the above. Separate the two
The context seems fine to me. It does say those things fairly plainly. Most of the tenants of Leviticus are ignored these days anyway, save for it's use in bashing gays.
Plese America, put someone sane in the whithouse this time. Obama would be a rereshing change to the insane redneck politics of fundamental christians - please take the republicans out
I basically agree with the message of this video, but keep in mind that speeches like this (by any candidate) are designed to appeal to a specific target group. I didn't hear of the pre-christian religion of the American Indians, The First People, mentioned in the rattling off of religions of the United States. It really is about time we recognized our own First People, Native Americans, American Indians. We're so politically correct when it comes to others from outside our country but fail to even acknowledge our own. Very disheartening.
Shouldn't be disheartening. Should be motivating. When an injustice bothers you... and not the masses, it is a sign that you are the one to rattle some cages.
There is WAY TOO MUCH influence of religion in American politics. The separation of church and state was included by the founding fathers for a reason.
Senator Obama, I resent being called a 'non-believer'. Just because I don't believe virgin births, resurrections, and afterlives doesn't mean I "don't believe in anything" as I am frequently characterized by the religious. It's an insult and a put down. How about 'non-religious?'
C'mon, "believer" is a term commonly accepted as refering to followers of Jesus Christ. Sorta like a hamburer isn't made of ham... You wouldn't get offended if McD's gave you ground beef when you ordered one ...would you?

This man better win! Through all the candidates, he is the only one who seems to think for himself! A man worthy of presidental stature, a man I want to call my president!

In the Battle Of Tripoli, John Adams clearly states that we are not a Christian nation. Having many christians does not make us a christian nation! Leave religion to individuals, unfringed by the government, and without any affect on the government.
GOOD! Religion has NO place in politics, or any forms of dogma for that matter. Politics should be conducted with pragmatism, logic, and secular humanist/moral principles. We many have a lot of christians, and our culture may be "Christian", but the government and its function are not religious affiliated (as in a theocracy); it is SECULAR. The Founding Fathers, no matter how much they prayed or spoke of god, did not have the purpose of founding a "Christian" nation.
I think you may have misunderstood him. He was saying that we should NOT have religion in politics, I believe. If that surprises you, you should see some of the republican candidates.
You have no clue then. I am an atheist, but the fact of the matter is this country is a majority theist. And in this climate a cool head like Obama is perfect for us to bridge the divide. He is the only candidate to mention "non-believers" in an inclusive way - without spitting "non-believer" out of his mouth like its a dirty word. As an atheist I am proud to say I stand behind Barack Obama.
Oh, I believe a lot more than 20 million people have been killed over the last 2000 years in the name of God, and the christian church. Christianity and religion in general is a disease! It has (and still is) been corrupting and brainwashing people for centuries. It's about time this madness comes to an end!
Umn, we are the most capitalist country in the world. Also, the two most powerful countries in the world are communist and socialist, China and the UK, Japan is socialist too and they're doing pretty good.
As a Christian, shouldn't you be sharing your bread (quality of life) with your brothers and sisters? And have you ever thought that there are third world countries that are predominately Christian i.e. they believe in Christ. You make Christianity out to be a USAmerian invention.
religion built this country. religion held it together for 200 years. it wasn't until we denied God, denied Christ that we began to deny the Constitution. now we have total confusion. unfortunately it's going to get worse until total destruction comes. America will fall because we forgot our first love.
Though I agree too many cease to think when they open a holy book, I know as many good religious people as good agnostics and atheists, and as many of bad people in both too. Read his Dreams from My Father; he's a thinking man of faith. Faith and science are both surreal - can our limited-spectrum eyes behold either?
Religion has formed to calm the greatest human fear: death and what lies beyond. Religion has a very important place in society though, just not in the influence of how a country is governed.
Barack Obama I will vote for you. But, please, please do not think that I am a believer. I am a rationale person who understands the importance of the separation between church and state. You are right when you question whose version of Christianity will be taught. Religion is religion and should be kept in the home, not in government or our schools.
I agree completely with thedrax about the religion having a real stranglehold on the human race. It's time to renew emphasis on the WIDER separation of Church and State, as the Constitution has prescribed for us all. No exceptions.
Barack is the man for the job and proves it here with wisdom and authority. He is the only candidate to even mention nonbelievers. I feel included in Barack Obama's America.
Barack Obama is a very committed Christian. He just doesn't agree in some of the ways of the Christian church. You guys should look up his speech on religion in barackobama dot com.
I'm voting for him in large part because of his view of religion and Christianity.
Dogmatic religious faith is stifling our country's ability to properly educate it's people. The most important thing to a democratic nation is a rational, critically thinking, well informed populace.
I agree that Americans in general are a religious people, but religious pursuits do not merit public funding or legislated coddling.
A courageous, wise and truthful speech. But you know the O'Reilleys and Ailes of this world will only snip "America is no longer a Christian nation" out of this and will try to scare uninformed and frightened people with that.
Grass roots Efforts cannot be censored and filtered, I was a potential Obama supporter and have been a subscriber for months, but my comments have been nerfed. I just dont know.
I have no problem with someone having faith in a Supreme Being or whatever. They can believe what they choose in the privacy of their own conscience. What no one should be able to do is translate that belief into imposition by public policy or legislation. When Bush invaded Iraq because God told him to I have a problem. When anyone tries to outlaw the right to privacy in matters of procreation, I have a problem.
As a Buddhist, I enjoy hearing Barack talk about religion, He conveys the message of caring and peace that is at the heart of all religion. At the same time he avoids the exclusionary rhetoric so common in most public speech.
Gender, race, religion, location, and sexual preference, are all tools governments use to divide and socialize the masses; a people divided are easier to control! Religion being the most powerful tool that the governments use to socialize the masses as children, so they are easy to control as adults; it teaches blind faith, and total obedience to authority! We have all been scammed!
Then, you can move yourself to the non religious Cuba or Russia. The problem is not religion. Is the way that men use it. You can be a Non believer and Kill 20 millions, as Stalin did.Or you can live in North Korea without religion, and suffer hungry. Or you can Move to Nordic Countries where the Christians are 98% and have even capitalists, have the best Life quality of the world.
"So as you can see brothers and sisters, today, this afternoon, it's not our intention to discuss religion. We're going to forget religion. If we bring up religion, we'll be in an argument, and the best way to keep away from arguments and differences, as I said earlier, put your religion at home, in the closet. Keep it between you and your God. Because if it hasn't done anything more for you than it has, you need to forget it anyway."- MalcolmX
Appreciate that Barack Obama is already going on a limb, pointing out the flaws in Christianity. The passages he cited are evidence that the bible was written not by God but by people who lived in primitive, semi-civilized times. That's already going pretty dang far, and I'm afraid that will probably bring repercussions.
Well, he would be the first American president for a long long time who is intellectually capable of thinking for himself! He has this kind of rationality which is barely needed in America.
Although he is christian, he meight be a good president after all, because he can distinguish between the bright and the dark spots of christianity. (I'm an atheist from Germany, where one third of all people are atheists).
You are the best candidate, but you didn´t understand the sermon on the mount. The sermon on the mount is a reflection of the life of Jesus. It is for example a benchmark how to treat your enemies to reduce the violence in the world, to stop generating new hate.
GREAT points, Mr. Obama! I'm very glad you brought these points up, and in the collected manner you did, as one would expect from a Harvard Law graduate. :] [5/5]
Barack, you're the man and I love you and you have my vote BUT...religion is half of what's wrong with this country. It teaches a warped and false reality.
Religion has had a stranglehold on the human race for more than 2000 years and it's time to end the lies, not embrace them.
Yeah, and I think all wise minds agree. But the thing is is that no candidate for presidency will win it with that platform. Not yet. Moderates are all right, besides. He acknowledged Deut and Lev even exist. Most christians don't do that. Christian moderates and really passive ones make up the majority of America. This is a good thing.
Then, you can move yourself to the non religious Cuba or Russia. The problem is not religion. Is the way that men use religion. You can be a Non believer and Kill 20 millions of people as Stalin did.Or you can live in North Korea without religion, and suffer hungry. Or you can Move to Nordic Countries where the Christians are 98% and have even capitalists, have the best Life quality of the world.
God is NOT Christianity. Christianity is wrought with 2000 years of corruption and division. It's left now with hollow, but strictly enforced ritual and tradition, the message muffled by all our human additions. God is everyones, the Christian claim of ownership is a sham, and we should all be able to see right through it.
I agree religion is a problem but im voting for Kucinich, this isnt just another election, ask yourself why Kucinich isnt being mentioned by the other candidates, I think any mention of him would lead to more support for him.
2000 years? Were we raised Christian? About 1.5 billion Hindu and Buddhists would appreciate an extension of another 2 or 3 thousand years. Religion is not what is wrong with this country. People who use religion to divide us and enforce their will is a problem. As a Buddhist let me know what lies I tell myself, My journey is to find those lies.
That thought is ahead of the current chronology of politics though.
You CAN be spiritual without being religious. But it's personal, not laid out for you conveniently wrapped up with a ribbon in a bow tie like mainstream religion.
that is completely insane! when people try to use their religion and force other people to conform to it, that's when there's problems. it's the people that's the issue, not the religion
I agree completely with the first 15 words of your comment... BUT: I suppose your fight is not truly with religion, but with fundamentalism, your criticism is not really geared at faith but its instrumentalization by the high and mighty.
I think Barack alluded to as much... Besides, consider how religion has inspired movements for freedom in this country and beyond. Think Gandhi, think Martin Luther King, think... Obama!
When I saw the Republican debate where they raised hands (or declined to) to show their opinion of the proposition of evolution, I coudln't help but groan at how few hands went up.
That more than anything else concretely signified to me that the Republican party is one of ignorance.
I'm also an atheist, drax. But I think you're mistaken about "what's wrong with this country." I think religion has been as responsible for the greatest achievements of this country, such as the Civil Rights movement, as it has been to blame for it's failures.
I think more important than attacking religion is attacking fundamentalism in all it's forms, including secular fundamentalism like the church of the free-market.
I don't believe that religion warps reality. Our country was established on Christian morals. I respect the fact that you choose not to believe, but don't condemn me for worshiping God. I immigrated to America for FREEDOM.
Religion introduces artificial concepts of sin, guilt, remorse, and enables arrogance in thinking we are 'better than others', as well as treating animals and the earth without regard.
Did you listen to the speech, though? I am an atheist, and I think this speech was brilliant. We are to be respectful of other religions. This is my problem with Christianity to begin with! Separation of church and state is entirely necessary. Barack Obama has furthered in my mind as the candidate I would choose.
I agree with thedrax. I imagine a political election where religion plays absolutely no role. And it is horrible that these candidates are all trying to prove that they are the most religious. But the problem is that is what voters want to hear. You can't hate them for playing the game. Just wish they had the courage to talk about actual issues. I still will probably vote for Obama as a lesser of two (or ten) evils (as I doubt Gravel is going anywhere.)
It actually says in the constitution that no religious test will ever be used to qualify a person into any office.
So, there are very clear and visible violations of that. ... If you guys think this is good you should here what the reds are selling to their guys.. oh it's scary. Lets just say this, if a Republican, other than RP wins a lot of us will be fleeing for our lives.
well it's not like we can force anybody to change them. this is america where any kind of belief is allowed. we may not like them, but america would end up like any other fascist country that tells people what to believe. freedom is what our country was based on.
@Basketball80 people also forget that America was founded by a specific set of people that left England for religious freedom, but only for freedom for their religion. They had no religious tolerance and would be ashamed of what America looks like now.

I think you may have misunderstood him. He was saying that we should NOT have religion in politics, I believe. If that surprises you, you should see some of the republican candidates.
Also, what country do u live in?
froodman42 4 years ago
what are you talking about? "People like this"?
FelipeQQ 4 years ago
You have no clue then. I am an atheist, but the fact of the matter is this country is a majority theist. And in this climate a cool head like Obama is perfect for us to bridge the divide. He is the only candidate to mention "non-believers" in an inclusive way - without spitting "non-believer" out of his mouth like its a dirty word. As an atheist I am proud to say I stand behind Barack Obama.

Then, you can move to Cuba or Russia(ateists). You can be a Non believer and Kill 20millions as Stalin did.. Or to Nordic Countries(capitalists) 98% CRHISTIANS, have the best Life quality of the world.
mitube1979 4 years ago
Oh, I believe a lot more than 20 million people have been killed over the last 2000 years in the name of God, and the christian church. Christianity and religion in general is a disease! It has (and still is) been corrupting and brainwashing people for centuries. It's about time this madness comes to an end!
Rapfanatic 4 years ago
Umn, we are the most capitalist country in the world. Also, the two most powerful countries in the world are communist and socialist, China and the UK, Japan is socialist too and they're doing pretty good.

As a Christian, shouldn't you be sharing your bread (quality of life) with your brothers and sisters? And have you ever thought that there are third world countries that are predominately Christian i.e. they believe in Christ. You make Christianity out to be a USAmerian invention.
FelipeQQ 4 years ago
stalin didn't kill millions because of atheism, he killed millions because he wanted total control of russia, and because he was mentally deranged.

religion built this country. religion held it together for 200 years. it wasn't until we denied God, denied Christ that we began to deny the Constitution. now we have total confusion. unfortunately it's going to get worse until total destruction comes.

Many people need the hope that religion gives.

Barack Obama I will vote for you. But, please, please do not think that I am a believer. I am a rationale person who understands the importance of the separation between church and state. You are right when you question whose version of Christianity will be taught. Religion is religion and should be kept in the home, not in government or our schools.
looneylucy 4 years ago
I agree completely with thedrax about the religion having a real stranglehold on the human race. It's time to renew emphasis on the WIDER separation of Church and State, as the Constitution has prescribed for us all. No exceptions.

Barack is the man for the job and proves it here with wisdom and authority. He is the only candidate to even mention nonbelievers. I feel included in Barack Obama's America.

Agreed thedrax...this acceptance of delusion in the name of pluralism is an albatross on society.

Barack Obama is a very committed Christian. He just doesn't agree in some of the ways of the Christian church. You guys should look up his speech on religion in barackobama dot com.
I'm voting for him in large part because of his view of religion and Christianity.
coolcat1541 4 years ago
Dogmatic religious faith is stifling our country's ability to properly educate it's people. The most important thing to a democratic nation is a rational, critically thinking, well informed populace.
I agree that Americans in general are a religious people, but religious pursuits do not merit public funding or legislated coddling.

Because if it hasn't done anything more for you than it has, you need to forget it anyway."- MalcolmX

dude, he's not saying religion is good or bad.
Appreciate that Barack Obama is already going on a limb, pointing out the flaws in Christianity. The passages he cited are evidence that the bible was written not by God but by people who lived in primitive, semi-civilized times. That's already going pretty dang far, and I'm afraid that will probably bring repercussions.
kevintoaster 4 years ago
Well, he would be the first American president for a long long time who is intellectually capable of thinking for himself! He has this kind of rationality which is barely needed in America.
Although he is christian, he meight be a good president after all, because he can distinguish between the bright and the dark spots of christianity. (I'm an atheist from Germany, where one third of all people are atheists).

You are the best candidate, but you didn´t understand the sermon on the mount. The sermon on the mount is a reflection of the life of Jesus. It is for example a benchmark how to treat your enemies to reduce the violence in the world, to stop generating new hate.

This is a good thing.

i agree, but people should have the choice to believe what they want as long as they dont force their beliefs on others.

But it's personal, not laid out for you conveniently wrapped up with a ribbon in a bow tie like mainstream religion.
matt0218 4 years ago
that is completely insane! when people try to use their religion and force other people to conform to it, that's when there's problems. it's the people that's the issue, not the religion

thedrax:
I agree completely with the first 15 words of your comment... BUT: I suppose your fight is not truly with religion, but with fundamentalism, your criticism is not really geared at faith but its instrumentalization by the high and mighty.
I think Barack alluded to as much... Besides, consider how religion has inspired movements for freedom in this country and beyond. Think Gandhi, think Martin Luther King, think... Obama!
GO OBAMA 2008!
outragious007 4 years ago
Well said.
When I saw the Republican debate where they raised hands (or declined to) to show their opinion of the proposition of evolution, I coudln't help but groan at how few hands went up.
That more than anything else concretely signified to me that the Republican party is one of ignorance.
JustOneEarth 4 years ago
I'm also an atheist, drax. But I think you're mistaken about "what's wrong with this country." I think religion has been as responsible for the greatest achievements of this country, such as the Civil Rights movement, as it has been to blame for it's failures.
I think more important than attacking religion is attacking fundamentalism in all it's forms, including secular fundamentalism like the church of the free-market.

I don't believe that religion warps reality. Our country was established on Christian morals. I respect the fact that you choose not to believe, but don't condemn me for worshiping God. I immigrated to America for FREEDOM.

Did you listen to the speech, though? I am an atheist, and I think this speech was brilliant. We are to be respectful of other religions. This is my problem with Christianity to begin with! Separation of church and state is entirely necessary. Barack Obama has furthered in my mind as the candidate I would choose.

90% of Americans believe in God? Eeeek. Glad I'm an Australian.
But Obama rocks nonetheless.
Good luck.

I still will probably vote for Obama as a lesser of two (or ten) evils (as I doubt Gravel is going anywhere.)
pabloescobar5 4 years ago 3
It actually says in the constitution that no religious test will ever be used to qualify a person into any office.
So, there are very clear and visible violations of that. ... If you guys think this is good you should here what the reds are selling to their guys.. oh it's scary. Lets just say this, if a Republican, other than RP wins a lot of us will be fleeing for our lives.
