This song really should have been performed in its entirety. It's a really beautiful song and Noll was superb......vocally powerful. I remember being so irritated with the neverending American Idiot showcase. When Green Day started playing their third song I was like "REALLY??" I actually saw the show with the original cast on Broadway and I regret every single penny I spent....and I didn't even spend much for it at TKTS!
Broadway is dying. They keep producing stuff like American Idiot while shows like Ragtime cant even get proper recognition let alone adequate screen time on the Tonys. It makes me sad, really.
@grades90 I agree. I think it was vocally suerb but her eyes betrayed little emotion and whatever she was doing with her hands seemed unsure and amature.
I don't go to New York very often, but my dad got me tickets to go see Ragtime and A Little Night Music for Christmas cuz they are 2 of my favorite shows of all time and they were both being revived the same year. Of course though, the week that we were supposed to go Ragtime closes so I never got to see it. It's a shame this show didn't get to last as long as it should have.
I can't believe American Idiot and La Cage got such ENORMOUS time blocks (especially the AI / Green Day double dipping), and Ragtime couldn't even have HALF OF ONE SONG.
I mean, I get it that Ragtime had already closed and didn't need the publicity, but come on people...Maybe things like this are the reason shows like Ragtime have to close early.
i love Christianne and this song soooo much but it seemed so pointless to have the set in the background... if all she was going to do is just stand on a platform the whole time...
@BroadwayKeepsMeGoing Well, it was nominated for Best Revival. Show the sets, showcase Christine, AND bring out the cast for a number. Sadly, the ceremony was pressed for time that year.
I LOVED this! I just wish she would have done something other than stand there. Even her facial expression seems almost bored with herself =\ But my gosh, her voice is just absolutely stunning! What tone *gasp*!
While I admire Catherine Zeta-Jones's role (too sad she was ill the day she performed at the Tonys), I think I would have given the Tony to Christiane.
Christianne is amazing. I saw her in a performance of Ace at the Signature Theater in Arlington, VA. The show was awful - - but she was still flawless.
No doubt this performance was amazing. However, Ms. Zeta-Jones did give a great performance in "A Little Night Music" and probably did deserve her award. Unfortunately her Tony perfomance did not display this. I saw ALNM in May with her and Angela Lansbury and was impressed by their performances. It is too bad the Ragtime revival closed so soon and was ultimately a flop- it is such a great show. Oh well, for a night of theatre we still have Mama Mia! and Rock of Ages playing.... :-\
She has an amazing voice. The way she hits those notes, not all heady and cheated, high but still full and not thin. I have only had the pleasure of seeing her in Jekyll and Hyde but would really love to see her in more things and hear her on more albums. I listen to her solo cd all the time.
i feel like soooo many movie stars are stepping in to broadway and robbing true and amazing performers in the theatre community! i loved watching to the tony awards to recognize amazing talent like sherie scott and christiane noll. now it's just hollywood bimbos ruining the gems of live theatre like this!
It's sort of a shame that the Tony's have stopped recognizing talent. Allowing lesser performers to go on 3 times or longer rather than a true artist like this!
SHE WAS ROBBED. I love CZJ, but she didn't really do anything phenomenal in ALNM. Christiane just stood there and sang. Nothing else, and I was MESMERIZED. This is how I felt when Raul Esparza in Company lost to David Hyde-Pierce in Curtains. :P *done ranting*
I met her at the SF Opera when she gave a performance this summer. Amazingly talented, and so humble and down to earth. I'm honored I got the chance just to meet her. What an inspiration to an aspiring musical theater actress.
I worked with Christiane a few years ago on the Witches of Eastwick . . . not only is she amazingly talented but an absolute sweetheart. If you ever have the chance to see her in, well, anything . . .drop what you are doing and go. Fabulous performance.
Tonys, come on. You think the fact that you have greenday songs playing alot and you had poison 2 years ago will make more people watch? No. No one watched the tony awards except for theatre fans. You're losing your viewers if you continue with this crap.
Ok, I know I'm probably going to get torpedoed for saying this, but Marin Mazzie originated this role on Broadway back 98', and she gave a POWERHOUSE of a performance of this song. You can hear her version of it on the two disc edition of the soundtrack. This is a powerful song that needs a powerful vocal, and Marin Mazzie certainly delivers double in this area. Christiane has a GORGEOUS voice, and I love her and Marin both, but in my opinion, Marin is still in the lead on this song.
This was truly horribly advertised and orribly casted.. Christiane Noll and Stephanie Umoh were the only people they got right with the casting... The Reason why Ragtime (Original Production) was such a success was because of how simple it was. The Logo was the Statue of LIberty and the American Flag... The Revival was like A Man (obviously Colehouse) sitting at a Piano with music notes coming out which were basically things that were issues and topics of the time... So complex for no reason.
@kjag23 The original used real fireworks every night and a real Model T and lots of other spectacles. They were not that successful and could not pay off their backers because so much money went into the show and people weren't seeing it. The poster was probably the most simple part of the show. Even the music is complex.
the fact that she can simply stand there and sing without much gesturing while being so entrancing and emotionally intense is such an accomplishment and such a gift. SOOO impressive!
CBS, I am disappoint. I had to listen to 3 Green Day songs during the Tony Awards... and then this song is cut down 1/3 of its length? Shame on you.
Christiane Noll... stunning. Absolutely stunning. My favorite moment of the night when watching this with my friend was 15 seconds into this, she asked, "Um, wow. Who is she? She is absolutely amazing. Her tone...." I didn't answer her question. I remained silent so that she and I could enjoy the performance. :)
@overthemoo I totally agree with you. During the Tony, I was looking forward to Ragtime's performance. I was really disappointed when Christiane started with "There are people out there..." It's still amazing, nonetheless. I love Ragtime. I don't get how she only got to sing so little and Finian's Rainbow didn't even get to perform at all.
@gowaneil Indeed. As for Finian's Rainbow, I'm assuming as much cast members were just not available. I mean, even for Christiane to sing by herself was probably because she was the only one available. Both shows have been off stage for quite some time now.
@overthemoo That's what I though too. I felt bad that Bobby Steggert didn't perform because he was nominated too. But it was really nice to have Christiane there. I thought Christopher Fitzgerald or Kate Baldwin was going to perform something since they were there for their nominations as well. But I guess you are totally right that both shows have closed for a while.
@gowaneil Oh true, I don't know how I forgot that Kate was there so she could have sang something. Or Christopher, yes. Hm, wonder why that didn't happen. Oh wait, Green Day couldn't have performed that second song. And Christiane DID only get 1/3 of her song.... le sigh... I hope that Facebook page of Hunter Foster's gets more attention than it already is. Let's get the Tonys BACK TO BEFORE!
@scorpioninpink Finian's Rainbow had its last show around the same time Ragtime did. I think they both got taken off Broadway about 4-5 months prior to the Tony Awards. So other people are involved with other projects by now or they just decide not to go, for various reasons.
I know, right? By the time American Idiot was halfway done with their bit, I was close to calling CBS and demanding they get that monstrosity off the stage and instead send on some real performers, like Christiane, who is incredible.
@brdwayfan I know that Green Day wrote the lyrics to their musical. So like Dolly Parton's and Elton John's brief appearances at their Tony Awards, it's all right for them to perform for a short time which they did. However, they let Green Day take up the stage for, what, 3-4 minutes?! Just Green Day and little showcasing of American Idiot's cast. Green Day, you're here as the songwriters, not as Green Day.
@hbomb2704 Not at all the point. It has nothing to do with Green Day's talent (I proudly own 3 of Green Day's older albums btw) or even the show. The fact is that NO show has ever took up that much stage time during the Tony Awards; anniversaries only get 1-2 songs. AI's performance was incredibly excessive. Ragtime had 6 nominations (to AI's 3 -- not that quantity equals superiority, I'm just trying to make a point here) and that didn't garner the show ONE full song performance?
It physically hurts me that they made her skip to the bridge.
