@scottab140 I can't remember what the rule book actually states anymore but I was also under the impression that you were not allowed to throw a forward pass after a forward hand off, but, I've seen it done numerous times and never ever called. At that point, I figured I was wrong.
Maybe the officials considered the hand-off a lateral. The ball had no motion relative to the field when #29 (the first ball carrier) received the ball moving sideways relative to the field. So, the ball's initial motion was sideways.
Granted, I'm not an expert on football, but I just thought I'd throw that idea out there for consideration.

@bankstasmusic I am not a safety for a D-1 school. Julio is a big and strong guy so if I had to try to tackle him, I would aim to take out his legs. In regards to safety play, I am smart enough to not allow the opposing player to get behind me. Your number one responsibility in being a safety is not to allow the opposing player to get behind you! That is something that #5 did not do.

FYI, replay the play again.

Look at shuffle pass. ;) The play, once again goes: forward pass, hand off, then another forward pass down the field. Google for·ward pass for the definition. The Arkansas's is a 5-3 with the 2 other guys being CB's and the last guy being a Safety. When you play 10 guys at the line of scrimmage and 1 safety, the safety always as deep coverage and the other 8-10 guys are responsible for the run, not the safety.

When Grant takes the hand off he is moving perpendicular to the line of scrimmage and thus the movement of the ball was to the sideline, not the goal line.

You're right. Julio had to stop and turn his whole body around to catch it. If McElroy threw it over Julio's shoulder (which he was supposed to do) he wouldn't have needed to break the tackle. He would have already scored. it doesn't matter though. It was still a nice play. I just wish that they threw him the ball A LOT more.

In FACT,, it was invented long ago and has been used WAY before Auburn or Gus used it! So as I said,,,NOBODY wants to copy anything Auburn does....its the other way around!!

amazing how AU fans will kick and scream and cry to make their points be heard, no matter how bad the facts are against them. AU has 3 national championships and AL has 13. AL has won many more games than AU, probation or not. There is nothing anyone can say to make Auburn's history match Alabama's. Alabama has accomplished many more things than Auburn has. Accept it.

This play was being ran 20 years before any of Suck Auburn's coaches were born. Dear God, you win a Nat Champ to get your overall total to 1 1/2 and your entire fan base is borderline orgasmic ever since? Down boy. @RollTideRolll32 Dude stfu. You do not know what you're talking about. When Gus was at Arkansas he ran the wildcat with Darren McFadden. Then one of Gus's assistant who left and went to Miami and had used it there with Ronnie Brown. Of course the Wildcat is old. But Gus somewhat re invented it at Arkansas. Then when it came back it got popular. And when Alabama started doing reverses? Oh yeah I remember when Auburn tricked them out their shoes at Jordan Hare in the '09 season with 2 of them.

The 1988-89 Cincinnati Bengals Coached by Sam Wyche were the first to employ it as a standard formation. This offense is nothing new, and gus did not invent it. He didnt invent the wildcat either..

John's last season with Bama Greg went out and threw a better long bomb then John ever did. and Greg put that ball on the money. he may not have the BEST arm.. but he has a good arm on him. his problem has been his freshman year he didnt have confidence to throw it. look at him this year. Is it just me or does it always seem that when an announcer says something like "This player hasn't caught a touch down pass in X amount of games." or "This team hasn't allowed a sack in X amount of games." than that is exactly what happens the next play LOL

You're right. Julio had to stop and turn his whole body around to catch it. If McElroy threw it over Julio's shoulder (which he was supposed to do) he wouldn't have needed to break the tackle. He would have already scored. it doesn't matter though. It was still a nice play. I just wish that they threw him the ball A LOT more.
