I dont think sabah will ever be philipine even if the philipine has US military in their country. The USA have bilion of in invesment in malaysia. I think the USA rather have good return in investment then having dealing useless war to get sabah for the philipine and secondly during the spain occupation of philipine they agree wil leave sabah to the british through "Madrid Protocol of 1885" in which making the sultan sulu lease become a useless paper. So annual payment just for sympathy.

if you look at about history of Borneo....Sabah was part of Brunei...... whole of north Borneo was part of Brunei in the era of 5th sultan of Brunei,sultan Bolkiah. until 18th century when its empire was gradually decline by the European influence.... it was never owned by Malaysian or Philippines back then..
