  • Im 13 and i'm getting my pointe shoes tomorrow!!! I have been waiting for this since i started dancing 8 years ago!!! I'm soo excited!!

  • I just got a pair (not fitted) and they fall off the back of my heel. I did not attach any band or string to it. I am assuming it should not fall off the heel even without the band and string?

  • Thank you for this video! It is very informative and we hope you don't mind we've shared it on our new dance blog!

  • i'm 13 wating for the day when i can look at my pointe shoes "sitting" buy my door all shiny begging to be danced in hope thhat day comes soon!!

  • i'm 47 and getting my pointe shoes this week, i can't wait!!!

  • i just got my pointe shoes today!!!

  • My ballet instructor recently told me during my pre-pointe class that she wants me to get into actual pointe very soon. If anybody has any advice for me I would be happy to hear it :) I'm super excited but kinda worried too:)

  • I'm getting my fitting today and I can't wait!!!!!!!!

  • i got mine and was told they were ery good 4 me and they r comfy, but i know someone who told me they were not working correctly with my feet ;s! i was sent here by her! lets hope it works!

  • I'm getting my pointe shoes after christmas break. I can't wait.

  • @PrepointeBallerina01 me tooooo! so exciting :D

  • I just bought a pair of pointe shoes yesterday. When I stand in the flat with straight legs the tip of my toe touches the box. It isn't uncomfortable, and my toes aren't buckling or bending. Is that a bad thing? Also, my last pair of shoe the backs kept falling off... Why did that happen?

  • @DanceSavedMyLife

I fit pointe shoes pretty much daily. As far as your current shoes go, you DO want the toes to touch the end and the toes should still remain straight. That is a good thing. As far as your last shoes go, there are different possibilities that could have been going on. They just plain might have been too big. Or it could have been that you did not attach elastic to the heel of the shoes, or if you did you elastic, that it was not tight enough.

  • Dear Lisa howell, Can you please make a video of things you can do to warm up, and also I have been dancing since I was 3, I am 13, and I have been taking 4 ballet classes a week, and I am done growing, am I ready? and why is my teacher not putting me up? I am best in class if that helps. Thank you

    MH

  • thanks for the tips!

  • gotta believe it better believe it

  • My teacher told me to get mine fitted for the first time. Not just at a dance store, but someone who has learned how to fit pointe shoes. I'm going in a few weeks!!! :D

  • My Mum quit when she went on pointe. I've always wondered if she had badly fitting shoes or not enough advice. That would be so sad if someone quite because of pain from bad shoes. Cool advice.

  • @icekat83 i quit pointe cuz i had 4 pairs of shoes that still didnt fit and they hurt the tips of my toes so bad, i just gave up... i was definately ready to go up on pointe, but for some reason, the tips of my toes (where i go up on) never stopped hurting from the second i went up on pointe for the first time :(

  • @MUSICisLIFE1429

Do you know if every pair was the same style/size? It sounds like the shoes were too big (every time). They should be tight enough to hold and support the whole foot. You will feel some pressure on the tips of your toes, but you shouldn't feel a whole lot. If the shoe is too big, your foot just slips down into the shoe. Imagine someone holding you at the waist and lifting you up. If they didn't "squeeze" you enough, you would slip through their hands.

  • the wings of the freeds go all the way to the arch of the pointe shoe

  • I have been training since October 2009 and I am getting them on my bday in June!

  • I love the videos this lady does! She is very good! I just have a question, does anyone knows if there is a left pointe and a right pointe? I've been told that you should use each point in both sides... Is it true??? Thank you and sorry for my english:)

  • @Bananux14 When you get fitted, the person will tell you depending on your feet.

  • @Bananux14 When you get fitted, the person will tell you depending on your feet.

  • pointe shoes with right and left shoe do exist (like bloch B morph) but its not that common.the "right" thing is to wear both pointe shoes in both sides and this way, especially when you are a begginer your pointes are gone break in easier and fit in your feet better.

  • Hello! I have been doing ballet for ten years now and I have been preparing for point for two years and I have just been told I can finally get my first pair of pointe shoes. The problem is that I have to go a long way to get fitted and it is also pricey. What should I do? Kate x

  • @Kat3ish You've been preparing for 2 years? I'm 13 and i've been preparing for 7 months and i got them today.

  • I think my pointe shoes might be too short because my toes feel cramped when I'm just standing, but when I'm en pointe they feel perfect. I just recently got new pointe shoes and we had to drive a while to go to a store thats supposed to be really good, so I really don't want to have to return them. I already sewed the ribbons and elastics on so I can't return them anyways. Any advice?

  • @alipeace11 If you use gel toe pads try using the cloth ones to create more room in the box. If you already are using the cloth "Ouch Pouches" then try using paper towels if you are comfortable using those. Also, your toenails may be too long, thus creating a more 'cramped feeling' when you are standing.

  • thank you!

  • Lisa you are my hero!!!! all your helpful tips and answers are so good! im just starting on pointe in 6 days im so excited.i ve never been on pointe before so i hope it will all work out!!!! im your biggest FAN!!!!!!

  • I ve been en pointe for 14 years and i am doing my last ballet exam...as im not getting any younger lol. but my problem is my big toe is so much longer then the rest of my toes and when i go to get fitted they always tell me they fit when i got up onto pointe, but when im standing flat it feels like my big toe is hitting a cement wall....i also have bunions starting i think this is from having incorret fitted shoes for so many years.

  • I'm getting my first pair of pointe shoes in 4 days!!:) I'm so excited thanks so much Lisa I'll keep that in mind while I'm getting my fitting.

  • I am getting mine today ! I am so excited !

    ^-^ yaaay !

Thank you for the video Lisa, I will keep all thoes tips in mind while I am getting fitted for my pointe shoes.

    Happy dancing !

  • Ur videos r really helpful and i've watched most...to bad i don't have my pointe shoes yet and probs won't get them in the next 6 months. WAA!:(

  • Your videos would be sooooo helpful to me if I only had pointe shoes! I am getting them hopefully in about 6 months.

  • u r so luky i cant get mine until next fall

  • i am getting my pointe shoes tomorrow

  • @Balletdancer980 Congrats :D

  • im 13 and im getting my pointe shoes tomorrow i cant wait!!!

  • ur so lucky... i recently joined a new dance school and it turns out that i've been learning incorrect techniques! i'm 13 and i have to wait till 16-ish to get first pair of pointe shoes :(

  • @LilMissCullen96 OMG!!! I feel soo sorry for even though i don't no you but i could just imagine*** im getting my pointe shoes in 6!!!! days im soo excited oh sorry i guess that doesn't help o well good luck!!!

  • dont worry, just work hard and you'll see its all worth it :D

and just think if you had gone on when you were 13 it could of like damaged your feet.

its totally worth the wait :]

  • hay i started ballet a couple of weeks agoa nd im 16 aswell!! rtho my dance teacher sed tht i wont b on pointe untill 3 or 4 yrs time?? is tht ok? or not!! or should i wait longer?? xxx

  • yes you need at least 3 years strength training in your feet and legs to support your weight on pointe. Any teacher that lets you start pointe with under 3 years training is unprofessional and risks your injury. She should let you know when you are ready.

  • im 14 and i waited 2 and a half years tell i went on2 pointe. i think 3 or 4 yrs is good cuz you get alot more strenth so you can go on the floor sooner:) good luck

  • can sb explain me what she is saying in 0:40 - 1:00 ? i couldn't get it

  • when can you talk about the size of the pointe shoe?

  • I'm so excited too! I'm going en pointe in September!

  • me too! i'm 14 btw, but i'm not sure if my parents will let me :( they are concerned that my toes will become deformed or something. my mom doesn't think it's "right". so we'll see how that goes. I've been throwing persuasive ideas at her for the past 3 days (i just found out) so maybe she'll change her mind, hopefully. But i think she might :)

  • if you really want to do it, and you tell them its important to you, they should be happy that you want to advance your ballet studies

  • My mom called the doctor and she said it was fine, so I'm allowed to do it! Yay!!!! hahahaha i'm such a dork.

  • good luck! : )

  • kristaaxoxwtp. r u on pointe level. If ur doctor says its okay and ur teacher then its okay. before getting new pointe shoes i have my doctor exam my feet. idk but my mom says i have to get an examantation before new pointe shoes.

  • I'm getting me first pair of pointe shoes at 1 today! I can't wait!!

  • I have been dancing sense i was 3 and stopped at 12 right before i was to get my first pair of pointe shoes. Now im 16 and finally getting them. yes im old. dont laugh.

  • Hey! I won't laugh 'cause I'm 16 too and going to get on pointe next week! I'm so exciting! It's not too late for everything if you believe and do your best!

  • I am 16 and i am going to get my first pair in 2 days!

  • Really?! I'm so excite too! I will go on first en pointe this Sunday! Good Luck!

  • dont worry about that! i only just started ballet when i was 16, now im 17 and on pointe, hoping to get into a great dance program in college :) it may be harder to start late, but if you really love it like i do then theres nothing stopping you

  • Good for you!!

I started ballet when I was 16 as well : ) I went onto pointe when I was 19 and wound up getting my college degree in dance performance, (with a modern concentration, ballet and jazz as secondary studies). I've headed up my own company, teach dance and perform professionally as a free lance artist now. It really is never too late to make dance a part of your life!

  • you did? that's wonderful.:)

  • 0:01

  • could to do a vid on what brands are best for what feet!! cheers..xx

  • omg dont the hurt!

  • Only a little. That's why you wear an Ouch Pouch

  • i have been dancing since i was 3. i am 12 and getting my first pointe shoes this month!

  • I'm starting pointe this year!!!I'm so excited!!!

  • I'm starting Pre-pointe next year, in June :), I'm soo excited for pointe shoes. I've been dancing since I was 2!( I'm 12)

    I wish you good Luck,

    REMEMBER!!

BECAREFUL, the can breack you toes, if you don't wear you pads in your shoes

  • I kind of knew that lol..but thanks for your support though..=)

  • hi ... i got pointe shoes just before christmas ... well started workin on them be4 cristmas !!! i kinda bought them in earlii sept !! but i tink there too big .. i can wiggle my toes quite freely and also even wen the ribbons are tied the back of them falls off !!! i kinda worried because i realli dont want my mum having to go out and buy another pair !!! can someone tell mi are any of the above bad signs of ill fitting pointes ???? wb 2 this vid pleaz !!

  • If they are slipping off your heals, buy a spray bottle, and fill it with water, then spray the heal of you tights, DON'T GET YOUR SHOES WET, it will take away the colour.

  • does not, I put water on my shoes all the time.

  • maybe I should try that I always have to pull up the heel of my tights so that they dont fall of

  • hi, everybody!:D I would like to know at which age is better to start on point shoes. I'm 17 and I don't know if I am too old to start. I've been dancing ballet for one year now.I would really like to try on point shoes, but i'm a bit scared. What's you're opinion?

  • why not?? go ahead

i have been dancing for 10 years and i sarted pointe when i was 10. its pretty easy once u learn

  • I wouldn't get pointe shoes until your teacher says your ankles are strong enough. It took me 6 years before I got on mine. I started when I was 4, got my pointe shoes when I was 10 and now I am 13 and I have been on pointe for 4 years. Don't get pointe shoes until you can go on your toes with no shoes on. That is what we do at my dance studio.

  • how long do pointe shoes last on average?

  • depends on how much you use them and on the dancer. some times a few weeks or months if your starting, but once you start doing shows a pair of point shoes can last 2 or 3 shows. some ballet dances go through multipuil pairs in just on show.

  • my pointe shoes lasted me a year because i always had troubles breaking them in. but i outgrew them

  • I have the same problem. Funny you say that because those were the shoes I was looking at trying. Thank you!

  • This is really helpful for me because my last two pointe shoes were not fitted correctly, and now with this video I am able to fit my pointe shoes correctly. Now my shoes fit so much better than before! Thanks Lisa!

  • ive been doing r.a.d for a while now n im starting pointe has anyone got any advice for me im getting them fit after christmas ??

  • I've got pointe shoes, but they were wrongly fitted or something, anyway they're too big :( So now I'm forced to stuff them with foam. I should have had a shoe with a more narrow box, but they were out of them :(

  • I just got en pointe yesterday!! I can't wait to find the perfect shoes!!!

  • thanks for posting this!

  • can somebody make a video on how to sew on pointe shoe ribbons....like, actually show sewing them on?

  • I get fitted for pointe shoes so soon!!!!

  • ah man.....my brand new pointe shoes i JUST got yesturday arre too small...my moms gonna kill me..

  • very interesting video, specially for male teachers that sometimes don't find the answer.......for their female pupils......

  • i have been doing ballet for many many years. 2 years ago i started pointe it was hard at first than it got really easy!!!

  • I'm 12 years old and i just got a letter saying that my teacher is ready to let me get my pointe shoes! i have dancing 8 years but 5 consecutave (spelling) YAY

  • in poine are you on the balls of your feet (demi pointe / tippy toe position) or are you really on the tops of your toes??

  • You're really on the tops of your toes.

  • on the tops of your toes

  • what if you have flat feet would anyone tell me if i can do ballet PERIOD with flat feet

  • Of course you can do ballet with flat feet, but pointe work is definitely more difficult. It requires more strength just to be able to stay up on pointe if you don't naturally have the arches. You can improve your feet, at least to some degree, by stretching them a lot and strengthening them with a theraband and lots of releves.

  • You can't go on pointe with flat feet. Nope. It is terrible on the feet. my teacher doesn't allow girls with flat feet go on pointe. I am sorry. You might want to look into this more, but I am pretty sure I am right.

  • I have flat feet. They are not completely flat but are flat and I am getting my pointe shoes today. I have worked on my feet forever. My arches are getting bigger from pre-pointe. I am in my 6th year of ballet.

  • I now have my pointe shoes. I got Bloch axioms. They are good for people with flat feet and have a 3/4 shank, which is easier to get on the box. I have very wide feet so i got XXX. :)

  • I have flat feet and i'm on pointe :-)

  • Yes you can do ballet with flat feet but pointe work will be more difficult than someone with high arches

  • ahhh NO.

yes, a person with a flatt foot will have trouble getting over the box of a pointe shoe but people with high arches don't have an easy time with pointe work eaither. why? because a person who is born with a high arch tends to have weaker feet. this is because the bones in the metatarsal arch are more spaced out. weak feet en pointe is not good. a highly arched foot can have trouble staying on the box. it is easy for people with high arches to go over the box and therefore knuckle.

  • I have Bloch Aspirations and the Bloch Serandes. I have large and wide feet and they seem to do the trick for me, they just take some time to break in.

  • umm... i need someone to reply back, my dance teacher wannts me to go on pointe. The problem is I have 9/10 size feet, and my feet are huge, if i get pointe shoes will my feet lok big?? do theymake pointwe shoes for wide feet? big feet? or slanted feet?? plz i need answers :]

  • yes they make pointe shoes just like that so there is nothing to worry about.

  • what if you have wide feet, are there shoes that are made for people with wide feet?

  • yes!! i have wide feet and i have bloch serenades!!

  • This is exactly how we fit shoes, except we possibly have a few more steps. Great video. I hope other stores watch it, because I know of some that wave people over to a pile of shoes and let them fit themselves!! Scary stuff. Even with this advice, I'd recommend getting fitted, by a pro at the store, or by your teacher. Even if you get fitted at the store, have your teacher check them! Hopefully she knows and can make sure they're right too :)

  • Thank you so much for this video!!! I'm getting my first pointe shoes in a week or two!!!

  • I've been using Bloch Serenades, but no matter what shoe I try, the heel is never narrow enough. These are the best I've found so far, anyone have tips?

  • I dont know what shoe to recommend but have you had them properly fitted? If you have a particularly narrow heel maybe it would would be worth trying to get them fitted professionaly

  • Well you could always try being fitted for a pair of a different model that do have a more narrow heel. If you go to discountdancedotcom, they have a nice selection of pointe shoes, with descriptions, customer reviews, and a 360 view of the shoe available! I love it, this will just give you a better idea of the diff shapes of diff models. Hope it helps.

  • Ordering pointe shoes online is a terrible idea unless you know exactly what size, style and width you need, and are sure nothing has changed since your last pair. Seriously, terrible idea.

  • I wasn't offering the advice to buy shoes online. I suggested visiting the site and reviewing the shoes. The site has wonderful pictures and descriptions avaiable that will help determine which shoe Might* possible be best. There are many different models brands and styles to choose from, viewing them is made easy, and might help a person to understand how important a proper fit is, seeing as how we are all shaped differently, as are the shoes.

  • ah i have the same problem! idn why...the heels are just always big. i mean not TOO big, but doesnt fit perfectly the way i want them to.

  • freeds are meant to be good for people with wide feet but narrow heels

  • i've got grishko maya's

  • hi!

    my regular size is 6,

but my pointe fitting was 4c..

they are extremely tight and uncomfortable and always rub against my toes.. even when wearing toe pads.

do you think this is rightt lol ?

  • hi.....im not studying ballet, coz there arent any ballet classes here, so i was planning to buy a ballet cd for beginners, any cd which will really work out....can anyone please tell me whether it will work out? & if it will, which cd should i buy? my age is 11.....helpppp

  • Hi i don't know what size i am in pointe shoes because the numbers are soo wierd and last time i ordered,it came out too big and wide... the name of Sonata MKII Pointe is the one i have to order. My regular foot size is 5 . please help me before competition.....

  • Um, when you got fitted they should have told you what size you were in the brand you got at least

  • Thank you. This video was very helpful. I will think of you two when I am looking for pointe shoes one day. :)

  • do someone now what is pointe shoes mark??

  • I never used padding like this as a student or professional and i think it helped me very much to toughen my feet up. just some masking tape should be enough in general.

  • Any suggestions/help from anyone on here would be greatly appreciated =]

  • Also is my box too small/narrow? even when standing flat my toes are squashed together and its quite uncomfortable, the pain is awful when en pointe =S But the woman at the shop did say that i have got the widest Pointe shoes they make... they are Bloch Suprima 5D, are there any makes that do a wider shoe?

  • I think Grishko ELITES are probably wider than Bloch Suprimas, but i would only recommend them if you have short toes as well, because the vamp is a bit short, althought they look amazing on because they show off your instep very well.

  • Bloch Suprima come in fittings also. I suggest you find somebody different to supply your shoes. What area are you from?

  • Sorry ment to say E fittings also!! (typing error)!

  • Lisa, ur videos are a great help to me so thanku and keep posting! A quick question tho, i'm quite new to pointe but i think my shoes may not fit me properly, i was fitted at the shop but i dont think the woman fitted me correctly! I have very narrow heels and the backs always slip off when i rise?! Do any companies make pointe shoes with narrow heels?

  • I hvae a question that has really bee what has been turing me off pointe for me is padding. My shoe fits great and I tried it with padding but my adding isnt enough. I used sheep skin for one time but i didnt like it then switched to the ouch pouch but I still need most....it hurts when on pointe not on flat but I dont know what paddin out there would probably be the best?(yes I have sentive toes i guess) Thanks great videos by the way!

  • pointe isn't easy... you can't expect it to be. Pointe does hurt at first but you get used to it. nuthin' like a lil pain eh?

  • pointe is supposed to hurt at the beginning... ur putting all ur weight on ur toes...

  • try watching pointe shoe padding. If you search lisahowell2 it will be on the list. Hope this helps :)

  • This explains so much, I wish I would have had this info years ago when I tried pointe. I know now that my vamp was much too long as I have very short toes. And yes girls I did start to develop a bunion on both feet.

  • what kind of shoes is lauren wearing?

  • hey thanks a lot!! this is so helpful

    xxx

  • I have BLOCK, ha sorry, wrong mixup on the shoes, ..this goes to my first message..if it posted correctly!!!

  • Yep, sounds like the box is too wide. If you can try a slightly narrower one next time, but in the mean time, try shaping a small piece of foam or felt to fit inside the box over your toes as this can help take up half a size :)

  • My shoes are too big I think, I side down them when I go on pointe, and the back of the heels always pop off. I tried to tighten my ribbons, but it doesn't stay on. I have a 4 C shoe..it's Grinsko..sorry for my spelling, not my forta lol! Thanks for this educational video, very helpful to us dancers :J

  • Thanks for your help! The fitter didn't have an X in stock so they ordered them. =]

  • Also, Make sure that the wings are long enough, as if they are too short, they will cut in under either your big or little toe joints and give that funny line. hope this helps!

  • This is a great video! I have one question for Ms.Howell. How can you tell if your shoes are too narrow? I think my last pair might have been. The outer side of the box sort of angled in, and I think it made me knuckle/sickle. They were Freed Classics, size 7, no-X. I'm getting new shoes today and I was thinking of trying an X. Also, (they were my 1st pair) died after five 30min classes. Do you think this is because of the fit? Thanks and once again great video!

  • In standing, feel how your toes are lying. Are they squashed together or overlapping, or can they lie flat? Is there space between the toes? The toe want to lie flat in the shoe. If the shoe is too wide you will slide down in the shoe when you go up. Also try sliding the tip of your finger in under the front of the vamp. You should be able to just get the finger in to your first knuckle.

  • Nice to see some quality videos finally. Check out my vids sometime if you like clips like this. Usually I'm posting at videos.lostfrog 'dot' com.

  • oops! Wrong video, disgregard!!!!

  • He He! Glad you cleared that one up! Although I might not be, Lauren is definitely the right size for pointe, and was wondering about the toilet bowl thing... :)

  • how long does it take to get to point?

  • Too heavy to be on pointe.

That's not dancing, it's just wobbling around on bathroom tiles.

Nice toilet bowl, by the way.

  • Also, to strengthen up the inner part of your ankle, focus on keeping the ankle aligned correctly by doing rises in parallel in front of a mirror, and then in first, but side on to the mirror. Let me know how you go :)

  • quick question i think that my pointe shoes fit properly because they fit all the guidelines but even though i wear ouch pouches the left edge of my right big toe and visa versa keep getting bruised... is it the padding, the shoes or me?

    (thanks)

  • Take a look at the surface of the box for sidns of wear. If you have a right and left shoe, you will be able to see whether you spend time more on your big toes edge of the shoe, or are evenly placed. If all other fitting issues are good, you may be fishing a little en pointe, and therefore putting more strain on the oter edge of your big toe. Does this make sense?

  • yes thanks very much for all your help!!!

  • oh goodie! This is very awesome! i thank you sooo much! You know, I was geting new pointe shoes last week, and I remembered this guide, and it was soo helpful for me!! Thank you so much!

  • Thanks for the vidoes Lisa! nice work lauren:P i'm doing my excercises now!:D

    helen :)

  • hey... just thought i'd comment to commend you on these vids..

i dont know how many times these would have come in handy... lol

time to get the whole ballet school on here instead of asking the teacher every class!

    thanx! ur a big help!

  • Thanks for such an informative video! Haha Loz! :P I'll see you in 2 weeks Lisa! Caroline H.

  • My pleasure!!! Was great to meet you and you mum yesterday :) Glad we could get your Achillies back on track!

  • next time i buy mine i will keep this in mind!

  • Also, so sorry, but realise that I did not mention the fit of the box. Your toes sould not be squashed yogether too much in standing yet it needs to be a close enought fit that you do not slide down into the box when en pointe. This akes some getting used to, but is very important. If the box is too tight, you will start overflowing the shoe hen en pointe which does not look nice! A long lean line with no bulges is your aim!

  • Thanks! Its something I have wanted to do for ages, and now it is so easy to do. Thank you Youtube!

  • i'm sure helps a lot of us =] thx!

  • Very nice, clear video. I think this will help a lot of girls buying their pointe shoes, as well as fitters that work in the store! Good job. =]
