Nice idea with the mirroring. By leaving detail you get both the back and the front, perfectly fitting. Its common sense, but its brilliant.

how do you get all of the shadows to stay inplace under the layers, but still have them come out a normal color? Am I just mistaking the "new" shadow color for the one underneath?

I paint the shadows at low opacity with a blue-gray colour on a layer above the skin and clothing set to multiply.
