  • this was filmed mostly in malta. they're talking two very different languages at the same time ,why?... because they said to themselves You tubers would know the diff.anyways.I think it an subtle insult,,not to mention they two very different cultures ;great movie ,true story too.ps it's portral of maltese pigs is not at all exaggerated ;) blue lagoon another movie filled there ,orca killer whale ;etc ..

  • This was appalling to Americans in the 1970's.Today it's mild compared to what the TSA puts us through at US airports.

  • For anyone interested, the entire movie "Midnight Express" is posted on YouTube. Also, this movie differed substantially from actual events. There is a posting on YouTube called "Banged Up Abroad" narrated by William Hayes that recreates the actual events. He escaped an island prison in a small row boat, then swam a river into Greece. Greece deported him to the US and there is a pic of him and his dad sitting in JFK airport.

  • I think it's safe to say who Brad Pitt models himself on.

  • one of the best movies ever made, with a Moroder soundtrack to top it off. It's portrayal of Turks may have been very harsh and prejudiced, but most great art is biased and subjective in many ways. It is portraying the Turks from Billy's point of view, not an objective observer. Of course one going thru this predicament would be biased and notice the flaws and negative attributes of any society. It is this very portrayal of Turkey and the Turks in a harsh light that makes this movies great.

  • Is It me, or Does this Guy looks Like The late "James Dean" Holy FUCK!!

  • I watched this movie 3 days before I went to Turkey on vacation. Holy Piss.

  • the book tells the true story, like in the movie he kills the guard this never happened in real life, in real life the guard was killed outside of the prison by someone else.

Have seen the interview on discovery channel with billy hayes

  • This movie horrified me when I watched it as a kid.

But knowing that he was carrying over a kilo of pot, which isn't like a couple grams and is always a felony, any adult should know better than to carry it over a border. You would go to prison in Sweden. The only difference is that prison conditions would be better.

  • Now they ask more questions at the airport about your baggage. Who and when did you pack your baggage, were they always with you, did anyone put anything in them, and what happened from the time you packed them to the time you came to the airport? They check your passport 4 or 5 times. They seem to pick on Americans.

  • has turkey changed much since then?

  • Who else thinks he looks like Brad Pitt ?

  • @clomatt More "John Cougar Mellencamp" .-)

  • Turkey was and is still ridiculous... just look at how they make anti-isreal propaganda in their media lol

  • i dont think ive ever seen anyone sweat more...

  • IT'S A FUCKING FRISBE YOU CUNT.

  • @sparkyinbath haha awesome

  • damn.. i ddnt udnertstand even 1word...

  • They are not speaking Turkish in this scene...they are speaking Maltese!

  • @jesscam333 I speak turkish and only one word seems to be the same...when he asked for Billy's backpack he said "canta", which is turkish for handbag or backpack.

Now when they are on the bus enters at 3:18, that guy is speaking turkish, but it sounds like a non-turk speaking it with an accent.

He says, "Beylar, Bayanlar, dikkat edin. Sizin emniyetininz icin ucaga girmeden once bir kontrol yapmamiz lazim. Sirlayin. Erkeler bir sir, bayanlar, cocuklar baska bir sira.:

  • That means: "Attention ladies and gentlemen. For your security we must perform a security check before boarding the plane. Please line up. Men get in one line, women and children in another line."

  • then the Turks hit him in the can over and over

  • Great movie.

  • Good lord, if there ever was anyone in the history of the world that deserved to get caught, it was this bozo. A master criminal you ain't, bro...

  • Nothing says "not suspicious" like a pair of aviators.

  • Comment removed

  • Nice movie.

  • I think it's fair to say turks aren't that crazy like this film shows, but they are pretty messed up.

  • This is a good film these are the way prisions are abroad in America they are Hotels

  • Fuckin propaganda

  • I hate racism... So i hate this movie..

  • i mean... i find myself watching more old movies than new ones and im only 21. accion movies from now sucks they only put a "good loocking" actor add a lot of FXs and thats it. war movies sucks too, horror movies ? hahah yes right... a 100% gore (and not the good one) and pure loud sounds and flashes.. yeah thats horror nowdays... comedy ? mmm nah nothing better than the old jim carrey movies or stoner movies from the 90's and 80's. western ? what happend to all those KICK ASS western movies ?

  • @WhereThereDude You really need to learn how to spell

  • @FocusXz i dont have the time sorry.

  • @WhereThereDude watch the movie Ted Bundy for a good horror flick. Truth is stranger than fiction...

  • yesterday i say this movie on TCM and to be honest the guy act like an asshole i mean... he got all that drug and he act like HEY LOOK AT ME IM SO NERVOUS. you have to be flanders to act like that... i mean your heart will kick like a fucking double bass, adrenaline will run. but he just act like a stupid kid trying to hyde something to his mom. its really clear that hes gonna get caught. but this is a great movie anyways. what happens to movies today ?

  • One of most under rated movies of all time! Randy Quaid was also brilliant.

  • I think the psychological fear experienced by this man when he was in prison was greater than the fear experienced by Jesus Christ. It is not the isolation that destroyed the man but the lack of humanity. I would prefer 10 years in humane prison than 1 day in such hell.

  • Wheres George Jung when you need him!

He would have breezed that shit!

  • This guy playing Bill Hayes looks like Peter Fonda in Easy Rider!

  • Disregarding its blatantly biased representation of Turks , one just cannot deny the sheer brilliance of this scene. The way the tension is sustained to the highest level , absolutely nail-biting.

  • @baruavice HAD to be the Billy's excessive sweating that tipped the customs agent off. Wonder what it was in real life...

  • @tommyt1971 his giant boner ! ..... nah im just kidding :P

  • @tommyt1971 a giant boner ! ... nah im just kidding :P

  • @baruavice It's not a biased representation of Turkish customs officers. Those guys do not fuck around.

  • @baruavice This movie can be enjoyed as a work of fiction. The problem starts when people take it real and worse when people throw ugly words to Turkish people. That is insane.

  • shit film , we have no ibne (gay) in turkish jail , all the film big lie !!!!!!!! NE MULTU TURKUM DIYENE !!!!!! sikktir git parker buyuk ibne yunan !!

  • @13ahava there are gays in every prison, dont talk crap

  • GREAT FILM. !! :))

  • there is something wrong if the officers are turk i coul not understand what they say

  • @tkhushrenada i think its stupid that drugs are band in the first place geting drunk is just as bad as taking drugs and haxix isnt even a heavy drug i think ppl should keep smugeling drugs until they legalize it

  • @ONEFIVEOITONOVE - Yes.. They extended this guy's sentence to 30 years! Can you fucking imagine that? That was the real shocker- that's a lot longer than the sentence for MURDER in the U.S. and many other countries..

  • this is a very nice film, very realistic. things are like this in turkey. if one day those guys join the eu we are gonna be like this...

  • Fucker deserved this

  • @SellosMusic Why is that?

  • @marcusliciniusad uhhh carrying drugs? sinds when is it good ? This idiot carries drugs and when he is arrested oow fuck why and they did not treat me well lol. Serves him right

  • @SellosMusic

This movie is not trying to depict drugs in a good light. Yes it served him right to be punished. But his punishment ought to have been fairer and not a sentence life in prison for carrying light drugs. The movie is about the disproportionate punishment and the treatment of the prisoners. Prisoners are still humans with fundamental rights. Those should be protected.

  • My hands are tied by Ankara!

  • amazing movie

  • im pretty sure Turks can see what the fuck is a frisbee... this movie is racist no matter what the facts are

  • @TheAbsoluTurk you sound like a right dick-head

  • @davidhaythornthwaite yeah because im right.

  • @TheAbsoluTurk NO!, its because your still a dick-head....lol

  • @davidhaythornthwaite yeah because you're opinion is wrong and mine is right. well i have no opinion, just facts.

  • @davidhaythornthwaite and you sounds like a small crackn bitch you fucking pussy!!

  • @TheBeowolf88 lol, getting to you is it, grow up, u are-wipe

  • The language the first policeman was speaking is Maltese. There were many Maltese actors taking part in this movie as it was filmed in Malta. And probably they used Maltese as a language since it is an obscure language spoken by a half million people only. Few would recognize it, and fewer would know that Malta exists and many would think Maltese is just a dog.

  • @IanaGyln But we still exist !

  • @mariboccful

I know I know I'm Maltese. Tkellimt hekk ghax kont qed nindirizza lill-barranin.

  • Great soundtrack. All I have to say

  • they are not turkish. they have an accent.and not turkey. bad production.this movie was hundle over

  • its true that beta not to fuck with turkish police. Maybe cia kgb can not catch u even mossad BUT when it comes to turks. they dont miss it

  • If you are in turkish prison you will wish the hell is nothing more :D

they truly fucking the shit out of you

    YAVSI YAVSI AMINIZI SIKECEGIZ !!!!

  • He's pissing in his pant :/

  • Come on guys he was only smuggling hash, not heroin or coke.

  • @YourTubeSpellChecker

for your info in turkey hash is stronly illigal

  • @okan931 Yeah well it should be legal.

  • @YourTubeSpellChecker Yeah but you don't know the history of mr hayes. This capture was actually his 3rd smuggling where the first 2 times he got away with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! second time ,he hid it in a fake leg cast.He deseareved life!!!!

  • @fadethetrade No he doesn't. He was just supplying people with what they wanted.

  • @fadethetrade

This is a powerful movie, even though some of the events are fictional. I also read Mr. Hayes' book, which is different in several places than the movie, but not quite as powerful! Did not know that Billy had tried smuggling before this. When did he try it the first and second times? Were those times in Turkey as well?

  • Man this guy was sweating like he just finished the marathon. You have to be cool if you want to do this, if you can't you go to a Turkish prison and get handled by Turks.

  • dont fuck with americans.

  • @Liverpoolallday dont fuck with the Turks :)

  • @Liverpoolallday Cant say that about the bold terrorist dirtbags that have been boldly attacking the U.S. The U.S. needs to stop sobbing and start kicking ass and take prisoners to be punished. I am a U.S. Marine in 1991 in Iraq and I kicked ass and now it looks like it needs to be done again.

  • "You must pay a FINE ... of TWO American dollars!"

  • Don't know if he really said "nation of pigs" in court. If he did, he was not punished for it. In the U.S. he could have gotten a life term only for saying that. He didn't encounter race gangs in prison looking to stab 3 white foreigners as he would have in the U.S. But most of all, he got a book and movie deal, something he would never have gotten had his experience been in the U.S. or they would have been gang stalked by the gov't. Look up GANG STALKING TV and MONARCH II (PT TWELVE) on YouTube

  • PLEASE WATCH MY REMIX OF THE THEME OF THE MOVIE THE CHASE, A CLASSIC OF ELECTRO MUSIC

  • Perhaps the MOST tense moment in a film!!!!Brilliant work!

  • @lazerbeak2125 brilliant story as well. Just hear the real billy hayes tell the story. AMAZING STUFF

  • turks are bastard

  • this film made me believe that turks were a horrid people, when in reality they are the nicest people i have met.

  • Dang...if only the U.S was this hard on terrorists and all the stuff we allow through our borders!

  • The entire movie was filmed in Malta, not in Turkey.

  • INTENSE! Too bad this actor, Brad Davis, had an intense a life too. He'd probably still be with us otherwise. It's all good, he's in a better place. This world is crazy.

  • Such a great film

  • Watch the show Banged up Abroad. Its a lot better depiction and Hayes commentates himself.

  • Comment removed

  • Brother & sisters everthings have reason This is hapened long time ago ve live now every country heve they on sistem if you trying to ceahting there is a price ofcourse sad things happen Drugs is Bad hes not hero just somebody like you & me Turk are Great People but doesnt matter in my world I say Good people are Great people ,I believe this story changed so many life olso saved so many life ,Stay out of Drug God bless you all.

  • A great movie !!!

  • I hate it when people fill sinks with water and wash their face, espeically in a public bathroom. That's so damn nasty. Ughh!

  • this movie rocks, I love to hate the prison warden what an a-hole....great actor though

  • @aceiommi Saw that guy in an American teledrama. American accent. Amazing thing about actors, they really fool you. Thought he was Meditteranean cos of Midnight Express.

  • HiCapacity YOUR ALL FAMILY ARE SCUM?YOU STUPIT AMERICAN BASTARD.

  • In response to HiCapacity's comment...NOTHING can save you from stupidity. And what Billy Hayes did was just that ...stupid; and he paid the price for it!

  • Oh crap.... they thought he had a bomb!!! EVEN STUPIDER.... why would you try to smuggle ANYTHING out during Heightened Terror Alert... hell, why would you try to smuggle anything out from the Middle East, as a passenger on a commercial flight, when you have a tendency to look SCARED TO DEATH going through customs???

  • Dang... how what was this kid thinking? Not to point out the obvious but my first guess about Drug Smuggling is.... 1) Don't look fricking nervous especially when you're going through customs.......Well, at least he made it out and hopefully he died a healthy, old age here in the states.

  • Il l a cherché !

  • He well deserved say 10 years inside but the point of the film was that a life sentence was not merciful. Life choices are hard. The homo-erotic scene3 was disgusting and unnecessary. As usual John Hurt was superb.

  • looks like kurt russel

  • in the real life Billy has not girlfriend

  • he was lucky , lucky he crossed the greek border after the fall of Hunta .

  • At the 3:06 mark.It was nothing but a reality check.Opps I fucked up.All the cockiness and tit grabbing on a public transit just went out the window. Its now a little too late and theres no turning back.I`m an American citizen BUT i`m in Turkey and I have a shit load of drugs on me.I didn`t mean no harm and i`m leaving this country. So what just let me go.No your not going any where.I`m sorry. It doesn`t matter.Your not going anywhere.Your ours now.Ouch!!

  • great scene

  • holiday in cambodia

  • Turkish, Fuck you !!! William « Billy » Hayes is a Heroes

  • well where did that find that guys?

they cannot even speak turkish fluently:)))

  • @arvedui1 I don't know where it is kind of sad they can't find people to speak fluent Turkish.

  • @strangerinwhitefilmed entirely in malta ,small parts in pinewood studios ,london

  • @arvedui1 malta

  • I acted the exact same when I was using my sisters customer card in the makro wholesale place.

  • @HiCapacity bitter?

  • Instantly recognised that sink as being manufactured in Barrhead, Renfrewshire?

  • I dont get how people view him as the hero of this movie. Don't fucking smuggle drugs

  • @tkhushrenada, agree. Why would anyone be dumb enough to play Russian Roulette with their life anyway, especially in their 20s with their whole life ahead of them. Is it really worth the risk of spending the best part or even all of your life in a hell hole or the death penalty in some countries, for what?

  • @tkhushrenada Me niether he got what he desire IMHO.

  • @tkhushrenada you don't understand nothing!!

  • @tkhushrenada He didn't derserve a life sentence.

  • @tkhushrenada It was only hash. And in 1970, it was ONLY hash. But with time and experience, we all know not to smuggle ANY kind of drug in the same way you don't stop and ask a 3 year old the time or directions. Just don't.

  • @Noodles37UK

In light of the fact I think they'd have been much better off just growing the pot themslves and concerting it into hash. I mean hell even if you get caught you're not goin to jail for more than a year or w/e (even that is way too insane). Consider this, they recently found an old pot growing setup near a state ran college in New York. Imagine that!

  • @Noodles37UK

Actually I've watched the Bill Hayes interviews and though I made the comment 2 months ago, I actually agree now it was harsh. The 30 year sentence was just obscene and by five years he'd rehabilitated and realised how stupid it was. His escape is technically self-parole

  • @tkhushrenada 1975 was the golden year for smuggling druggs and alcohol and most of the times it was really nothing to go to prison for . like 2 ks of hash was nothing at this time.

he is not the hero but he didnt deserve that kind of treatment .

only a pedophile deserves such punishment.

  • @romas1995 you know ur right im turkish and i agree that he didn't deseve what he got he should have smuggled it out of a differnt country

  • @romas1995 Actually, the year is 1970: Billy was arrested then & Susan mentions that Janis Joplin had died the previous day, which would've made this day Oct 5 or 6, 1970.

  • @tommyt1971 my bad. my point is still valid though.

  • @romas1995 Very much so! Just pointing out a minor error, nothing big. Looks like, according to the closing titles before the credits, that Billy escaped on 10/4/1975, almost 5 yrs to the day aft he was captured at the airport. Quite a coincidence. The movie is heavily fictionalized tho, Stone took a LOT of liberty w/the orig story.

  • @romas1995 Corporate Crimes/White Color Crimes deserve that treament. Think of the men who caused the World Wide Great Recession.

  • @romas1995 And he didn't get the treatment pictured in here. There are exaggerations and fiction. For example, he was never raped. Although, prisons are tough places in many countries. I have watched his story in Banged up abroad at Nat. Geo. Actually, I listened to worse stories from other people who were thrown the prisons in other parts of the world due to smuggling drugs.

  • @tkhushrenada It´s not about the drugs, it´s about been an slave in a foreign prison and have a mega sentence just for politcal issues. You smuggle drugs, go to jail, but have to be treated like a person, not an animal. I don´t know if the turk jails at these time were like the movie represent. I saw it just like a movie, I don´t hate the turks. Seeing him escaping from that turk jail is liberating. He is returning to be a human, not a slave ;)

  • @tkhushrenada No one thought he was a hero. It was a movie.

  • @tkhushrenada I don't know if he was portrayed as a hero. They did do a number on the fascist turksih Government however, they ran a police state for over a decade and they were allies of the U.S. Their commitment to human rights was appalling and the only reason they got away with it was because they vowed never to invade Palestine and take back what had been their for four hundred years.

  • @tkhushrenada he's not portrayed as a hero, he's portrayed as someone who does something wrong but gets ludicrously over-punished for it.

  • @AlexisCapri

hence my later comment reading the book and agreeing he was over-punished and my earlier comment was wrong ^^

  • @tkhushrenada It was the 70's, shut up....go back to knitting booties for your grandkids!

  • @tkhushrenada hahahahhaha wuss

  • he looks like brad pitt

  • First of all, the actors are not real turkish guys. And secondly, this movie was exaggerated according to the REAL Billy Hayes! He said that they had all that stuff in that movie just to sell it...

  • dude if you want real stuff you should see locked at abroad.its just movie but these are real

  • The only thing bad about this movie was that it was over exagerated according to the REAL Billy Hayes

  • Best movie ever.

  • He looks like a young Axl Rose, ya think?

  • Great Film 10/10

  • Brilliant film,this opening scene...VERY INTENSE!

  • wtf was he thinking?

  • beautiful film

  • what is the theme song at the airport? (stress song)¿?¿?

  • Oliver Stone wrote the screenplay.

  • I bet that if he stayed in line like everybody else they wouldnt have felt the hash beneath his shirts

  • @hitmankanadiz13

when I first saw the movie years ago, i was saying the same thing. But if you look at how they searched everyone else, didn't make a difference if he stood inline or not, they were searching the midsections of everyone. BTW, read the book, tells alot more detals, especially how he escaped, which didnt happen at all as the movie showed.

  • @hitmankanadiz13 i know dude. never act guilty. why not just bring some seeds home?

  • @condors1972 Nuċċali; it's the Maltese word for Eyeglasses . It comes from the Italian word Occhiali

  • @ellulivan i love that part in maltes im from maltaa and it rare t see fillms likes these <3

  • @RealPinkDreams....actually the soldier on the bus first asks "what are you doing" in Maltese and then he says something else in another language. The soldiers near the plane....are not Mltese. As for the plane itself, it made part of the Airmalta fleet....infact you can recognize the colours which Airmalta used to paint its planes with back then. They changed only the plane's tail, to mask the 8 pointed cross (symbol of Malta) which would have otherwise revealed the trick.

  • @RealPinkDreams....And finally the prison where most of the movie takes place was set in Fort St. Elmo in Valletta (the capital city of Malta)

  • @RealPinkDreams at least three actors in this scene are Maltese. The two policemen searching his bag and the soldier searching on the bus.....they are speaking Maltese (my native tongue) not Turkish, Armenian or any other language. For the rest I don't what language is it.

  • @ellulivan dude, when the policeman asks him to take his glasses off...whats the word he uses?

  • @xxLimbo85xx this movie just shows how retard can people be by giving Turkey a bad nae and out job is to kill you fuckers you will see in the news and tv any anti Turkey people will fucking die and you be a man give ur adress i'll come there fucking kill you

  • @Bora199420 theres plenty of anti turkish people out there, are you goanna come personally kill them all?

  • @Bora199420 lol, fucking tough guy faggot

  • Was this scene filmed at Luqa Airport in Malta?

  • @waxwarrior03 no but the language is Maltese

  • -What he said ?

    -I dont know

-They always have everything ass backwards in Turkey. ?????

    truth is bitter

  • they not Turkish you dumb fucks

  • 3:33 what did you say bitch ??????? i'll fuckgi kill u

  • whats the movie is about i am Turkish but i dont understand and the people that speak Turkish is not very fluent
