Best ball player ever as far as I'm concerned. I read a book about him and it projected what his stats would be if he didn't have to retire at 35. He was ahead of Babe and Hank in RBI's, walks and hits when both of them were 35. He also started at age 22 while both of them started at 20 so you figure they got a jump on him there. He would of had close to 700 HRs.
Thank you for this. Lou Gehrig is one of my all-time heroes, and not just for what he did on the ball field. This was a man, a real man, one of the rare gems in the world of pro athletics for his demeanor off the field as well as on.
He was, unfortunately, always in someone else's shadow even in death early on. He started playing when Ruth was in his heyday. Then when Ruth left, DiMaggio was there. When Gehrig retired due to his disease, the Yankees won another WS. When Gehrig died, DiMaggio was on his 56 game hit streak. A Year later when Gary Cooper did the movie, he didn't win the Oscar. James Cagney won for, ironically "Yankee Doodle Dandy."
Here's a few things you may not know...he's not buried here with his wife as the narrator mentioned but instead his ashes are here...his birthyear says 1905 but he was really born in 1903 and he died exactly 15 years to the day that he took over for Wally Pipp. One more note worth mentioning is that Pipp was in attendence for Lou's very last game as a Yankee. He just happened to be in Detroit and wanted to see his old team play. Coincidence? I think not. Divine intervention? Maybe
My father also died from ALS. he was a writer. It was obviously devastating for someone that loved communication so much. From diagnosis to death it only took two years. Two hellish and heinous years. I do the walk to de-"feet" ALS every year. I guess that's all I can except write about the disease, him, and hopefully publish his writing. I hope that science finally finds a cure someday. it's hard to see someone you love in Locked in their own body.
My mother died from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease) two years ago. Please support your local ALS chapter by making a donation or participating in the Walk to D'feet ALS . If it were not for this foundation I don't know what we would have done. To this day, there is no treatment for ALS. Research is ongoing. The ALS Foundation educated us in how to care for our mother and also aided us with wheelchairs and many other pieces of equipment needed to care for a patient with Lou Gehrig's Disease.
Im a sox fan and I hate the Yanks........But Lou is the classiest ball player of all time and by far my favorite ballplayer in the history of the game. His speech is amazing and dedication tremendous. Lou is nothing but class!
Its ALS and its also known as lou gehrig's diease because he was the first person to be diagnosed with the diease. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed.
They just let you go to his grave? If they did the world realy doesn't have much respect for great baseball players... I'd treat his grave site like an airline terminal
Taking into account power, average, hits, total bases, rbi's, slugging percentage, strikeouts and the number of (full-time) years played, Gehrig's got, by far, the best all-around offensive stats in baseball history. This includes the highest per season rbi and total base average in history. Look at his 1934 Triple Crown year. 409 total bases with only 31 K's. Yes, today's pitching is completely different, but these numbers are still insane. No one comes close (and I can't stand the Yankees).
i have been there before and its a place were you can just think how great of a person he was and i mean you get that feeling he is watching when your there
my mom actually has lou gehrig's disease. i really want to visit this site. but im only 16 .. so its not something i can just run off and do. this looks so cool. thanks for posting it =)
Gehrig is buried in Valhalla, New York. IDK where for sure that is (I live in Utah so IDK haha) but yeah, that's where he's buried. I wouldnt mind visiting the site one of these days.

Buried or cremated, same difference. Its not a disgrace to be cremated. Its actually better than being in the ground rotting.

I's a disgrace that he got cremated. He was the best baseball player of all time and deserved a proper burial and funeral.
