This song has a HUGE amount of meaning for me. My mother, who died of cancer over 20 years ago used to sing this to me when I was a child, also, my father (they divorced when I was very young), myself and my father's girlfriend all sang this together while driving to their place in Quebec. Love this more than just about any song I can think of.
Nice memory from my youth.I have been doing some research on the title because I thought it was "Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes". Wrong and correct. The original single which was released in 1964 in Canada only bears the title "The Frech song". It is only when it was released in the US that "Quand le soleil dit bonjour aux montagnes" was added in between brackets.
My son died on a mountain in south america 2 years ago. Ever since I was a little girl I listened to this song and it always made me sad - like a premonition or something very emotional was going to happen. It did. When I heard this song again on the radio recently, I understand and relate to it completely. RMD
@RobertaDuncan1 : as something is very beautifull it is also very dangerous. Like to see the sunshine on the mountains. You know Canadians came to Europe to put little flags on peoples graves from 50 years before. Nobody else do that. I listen a lot to this song. Sorry for what happened. But you have to take care of yourself.
im 14 and i like this song. i heard my grampa use to listen to it. i never got to meet my grandpa so i listen to this with my dad and it feels like my grandpa is there. thats why i like this song.
A really nice song. I wonder who it was off camera she smiled at twice during the song. Her husband maybe? I'm not sure if I've ever seen a performer do that during a taped performance that was not in front of an audience.
I have an album of Lucille Starr produced by Billy Sherrill. It doesn't have a date or time so i don't have any way of knowing when it was recorded it says on the cover that it was her first solo for Epic..I've had it for the pass 50 years and its still in mint condition. Some of the songs are Who's gonna stand by me.To far gone.Hello Sadness.Cry Cry darlin. just to name a few.
So good to see her still so young there. Don't misunderstand. I like seeing the fun she's having in the later versions, here on YouTube. LOVE this song. Love her singing it.

@pirateofhyrule . . . "The French Song" is correct - in both English and French. Sometimes it is referred to as the opening lyric: "Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes" (When the Sun Says Good Day to the Mountains) - but the actual name you would google to get a recording would be "The French Song."
@pirateofhyrule The title of the song is " The French Song " but also knowed as " Quand le Soleil Dit Bonjour aux Montagnes " = When the sun says hello to the mountains
@pirateofhyrule It is a French song. The title is; "Quand le soleil dis bonjour aux montagnes" which translated means; "When the sun says goodday to the mountains"
@pirateofhyrule The song came from the State of Lousiana U.S.A. and in that State is a French spoken Part like the place Baton Rouge. So folks speak English and French
@pirateofhyrule They always called it "The French Song" out here In western Canada. It was extremely popular about 30 years ago, sung by Lucille Starr. It is very like out of print by now, a lot of great songs went that way.
@pirateofhyrule The reason why they called it the French Song is that Lucille Star is from the State of Lousiana U.S.A and in that State is a so called French Spoken part.Lucille sings the version in French and afterwards the same text in English
@BecStBec I saw Lucille at a club in Vancouver, I think around '86. I had been SO in love with her and "The French Song." I bought an LP and when I asked her to sign it I told her "I was so in love with you, thought you lived on the other side of the country but you were only 10 miles from where I lived in Burnaby!" She gave me a nice authograph, a big smile and a nice kiss on the cheek! What a beautiful voice...
I ADORE this melody, the song is never boring...I sung this with my band, but the men did not sing the French in a good way, so they ruiend the song all the time....better to sing it alone! Those good old times....I miss this kind of song!
i think i gonna do a new version of this song just to see how it sound with drums bass you name it new arrangement for this song to see if people like it
Beautiful, just plain beautiful...I got this wonderful lady's autogragh during Canadian days in Kalispell, Montana in 1971 or 72...somewhere in there. Brings back great memories. Thank you for posting.
Erinnert mich an Roswita, meine erste große Liebe.
2003 1st time from Lucille and it reminds me of Christa.
A truley nice and unassuming lady, she opened the door for so many female performers who came after and is rarely if ever acknowledged. She was the first female Canadian singer to sell more than one million records and opened the gates for the likes of Catherine MacKinnon, Anne Murray, Jan Arden, Joanie Mitchell to have a career here. She should be made a Order of Canada member
This is Great!! I listen to it often. My mother, father and grandparents were from New Brunswick, Canada and spoke french but i never learned it (except a few words and expressions) I am very sorry I did not learn more. I live in Nebraska now and the only time i hear 'french' is when i play this and remember way back when. THANKS!!!
Lucille Starr is from Mallairdville, near Vancouver BC. She still lives there. A local theatre produced a musical based on her story last year. There is a street named after her in Mallairdville

I just attended a fantastic show about the life of Lucille Starr at the Evergreen Theatre in Coquitlam. The two actresses who portrayed her sang all the old favourites beautifully!
It was so nice to see her sing this when she was young. I first became aware of Lucille when I saw her portrayed on one of those Canadian heritage commercials, and bought her cd and have been a fan ever since. Seeing this video really made my day. Thank you for the video, please add more if you have any, and thank you Lucille, for your beauty, both inside and out. You sing like an angel!

Yes, it is actually called "The French Song". It was first released as a single on Almo International Records (# 204)
in the United States in 1964. It reached #54 on the pop charts. It was re-released in 1970 but did not chart.
Almo International Records was part of A&M Records owned by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss.
If you're looking for the full French parenthetical title, it is (Quand Le Soleil Dit Bonjour Aux Montagnes).
'The French Song. is the title on the record label.

Yes, she sure does. She puts every other female singer to shame.
