I heard this talk on the Point of Inquiry podcast. I was going to post the audio on YouTube; I'm pleased to see that someone beat me to it. This is a beautiful talk indeed.
They doesn't care much for the stars or any knowledge from which might come great benefits in long terms.
So instead what people focus on is the simple things in life.. how to eat/drink more, how to have more pleasant moments, sex, music and in general things that might get them comfort and benefits now or today.
Go on the street and ask people what are the stars.. then come back and share the statistics :-)

Carl Sagan didn't know anyone in his childhood who knew what stars were? Sound pretty dubious to me.

@spec24 It would sound dubius to me as well, but as a teacher I see firsthand exactly the kinds of communities he references.
