A thirty year old home made demo. Still sounds amazing and tons better than all the crap that passes for music nowadays. Oh the days of new Police albums like Ghost In The Machine... love love love that album... bought it the day it came out... and that iconic cover with the digital images of the three members of the band... the album, the whole thing was pure genuis.
The optimum would have been this demo version with drums from Copeland on the album. I think that the demo version is better then the actual album version. It has a much better groove etc.
Nikkikava: Where did you find the extended 12" version nothing about it online. This is my all time favorite Police song. Hope to hear back from you or anyone that knows how to obtain the extended version. Peace.
wonder why he didnt use the background melody, its really good shit. Sounds mysterious, not that the studio version isnt good, but this had the potential to be even better
Incredible to hear that most of the final result were already there on a demo stage, Sting must have been very demanding, he had a precise idea of what he wanted his songs to sound like. I'm impressed :) Great material mate! Love this :)
Wow, thanks for sharing this! "Secret Journey" is one of my favourite Police-songs! I love how it's so beautifully sad but full of hope at the same time.
This song is best on Everyone Stares DVD with STING coked up overdubbing his bass part jumping up and down, classic STING in Montserrat recording Ghost in the Machine, I like the edgy coked up Police Stewart played everything uptempo!
For a "demo" it's pretty freakin' good. Great melody, lyrics and music. What else could you expect from these guys ? This is the kind of thing that motivates me lyrically and musically.
Yeah, I love this song. The album version is better. I love the order of Omegaman, Secret Journey, and Darkness. Andy sounds great with all the texture landscapes.
"Ghost in the Machine" is the most important album in my life, as it spurred some emotional maturation. In particular, the song "Secret Journey" resonated with me. To hear how bad the original version was is encouraging. It reveals that some good engineers and producers went to town on these songs and made them into the perfectly balanced gems they are. Sting sang so many worse versions of the phrases we know--just astounding the difference.
Ghost in the machine is such a great album, I absolutely love Spirits In The Material World, Invisible Sun, One World, Omegaman, Secret Journey, and Darkness.
Hi All.. I'm new to this but all I can say is WOW! Two things... I have Last Exit - Sessions and Synchronicity Demos, on tape. Gimme tips and thoughts to get them to you and of course how to get me a more permanent copy of this stuff. PS - I sang with Sting on stage, 1996 Sydney State Theatre and I feel so much better telling you all :-)
The real magic of The Police is in the demo tapes, the b-sides, the non-hits songs on the albums and the live performances - besides, of course, the regular hits that everyone knows.
I can't describe that thing that Andy, Stewart and Gordon create besides sheer magic.
This song always reminds me of a Shamanistic journey... the journey could be any kind of journey, mental revelation, one that has aprofound effect on your life and who you are... This is a fantastic demo thanks for sharing it!
Yeah, now think about everybody having their own secret journey, everyone trying to be a holy man, and you'll see the kinds of journeys and plots of your officials and enemies alike.
Oh my GOD!!! This is favourite police song ever - and I had heard a rare extended 12" version of it years ago which I have never been able to find but this is WICKED!!!! Thanks a HUGE lot!!!! And for the Don't You Believe me demo - WICKED!!!!
Been looking for it for 15 years!!! Someone I know found it in a rare records store but I've never been able to find out where it came from. I haven't heard about the new box set but I HAVE heard they're in the studio and it looks like we're going to get a studio album next year :- )

A new verse? And no fancy fading/wind/storm beginning? Can it be?
It goes like:
"Now/who I could see the logic,
There has to be a plan.
You want to be with questions,
You are a holy man."
Is this what the song is about? The Police wants us to go on a "Secret Journey" around the internet to find this "Love" we miss and hear the missing verse telling that we "Are a holy man"?

You can hear them singing much clearer. However they were smarter to speed it up the way they had and make it tight.

Is this a demo Sting made to share with Andy and Stewart when they were selecting cuts for GHOST?
I always loved "Secret," esp. where it sits between Andy's song "Omegaman" and Stewart's "Darkness." A great trio of songs.

totally agree.
Those last three songs knock me out. Completely underrated by the fans and sadly ignored by the band on the reunion tour.
