  • A thirty year old home made demo. Still sounds amazing and tons better than all the crap that passes for music nowadays. Oh the days of new Police albums like Ghost In The Machine... love love love that album... bought it the day it came out... and that iconic cover with the digital images of the three members of the band... the album, the whole thing was pure genuis.

  • You can hear them singing much clearer. However they were smarter to speed it up the way they had and make it tight.

  • The optimum would have been this demo version with drums from Copeland on the album. I think that the demo version is better then the actual album version. It has a much better groove etc.

  • Come ON THE POLICE, Give us JUST another Song! A NEW One! Please!

-All of Yours, Brilliant! Thumbs UP!

  • :D quiero la campera de Sting (que tenia que ver no? xD)

  • The Police are so amazing that even their demos sound awesome!

  • This picture is the Police in New Zealand 1983. They are receiving a powhiri(maori welcome)

  • Nikkikava: Where did you find the extended 12" version nothing about it online. This is my all time favorite Police song. Hope to hear back from you or anyone that knows how to obtain the extended version. Peace.

  • wonder why he didnt use the background melody, its really good shit. Sounds mysterious, not that the studio version isnt good, but this had the potential to be even better

  • Incredible to hear that most of the final result were already there on a demo stage, Sting must have been very demanding, he had a precise idea of what he wanted his songs to sound like. I'm impressed :) Great material mate! Love this :)

  • i remember this photo of them way back in the early 80's.

  • I'm discovering this song again...

  • wonderful to hear this

  • I can't get this tune outta my head. This sounds more natural than the pro released version on tbe album.

  • Wow, thanks for sharing this! "Secret Journey" is one of my favourite Police-songs! I love how it's so beautifully sad but full of hope at the same time.

  • Awesome!!!

  • You incorrectly state 'Sting's Ghost in the Machine' It's actually the Police's Ghost in the Machine. MASSIVE difference.

  • he did write the songs. not that i dont love the police but you sound like an idiot.

  • Who are you talking to RTE101?

  • bah never mind.

  • In my opinion this song represents what this band is about: mistic, magic and looots of talent.

  • This song is best on Everyone Stares DVD with STING coked up overdubbing his bass part jumping up and down, classic STING in Montserrat recording Ghost in the Machine, I like the edgy coked up Police Stewart played everything uptempo!

  • i can hear the genisis of Every Breath in this...anyone else?

  • I love the picture, so awesome. This song is deep, and like king of pain, it has always spoken to me.

  • For a "demo" it's pretty freakin' good. Great melody, lyrics and music. What else could you expect from these guys ? This is the kind of thing that motivates me lyrically and musically.

  • I Like both versions alot! but i dont really like the 2nd demo version too much

  • Yeah, I love this song. The album version is better. I love the order of Omegaman, Secret Journey, and Darkness. Andy sounds great with all the texture landscapes.

  • Better than the album version.

  • Please!!!!!

the album version of this song is one of the police best songs ever!!

Stew. and Summers Rocks in it!!

  • I agree that Stewart and Summers rock, but it was writen by Sting and intended to be quiet an...as it it as a demo.

  • Awesome(my standard comment)

  • i love it when thay all sings together..

    also loved the guitar riffs..

  • i think Sting is singing all the parts-he never let them sing in the studio on his songs

  • his blindness was his bliss. . .

  • "Ghost in the Machine" is the most important album in my life, as it spurred some emotional maturation. In particular, the song "Secret Journey" resonated with me. To hear how bad the original version was is encouraging. It reveals that some good engineers and producers went to town on these songs and made them into the perfectly balanced gems they are. Sting sang so many worse versions of the phrases we know--just astounding the difference.

  • Ghost in the machine is such a great album, I absolutely love Spirits In The Material World, Invisible Sun, One World, Omegaman, Secret Journey, and Darkness.

  • Very wonderful song!!!!! XD XD

  • Where the heck did you get this...

  • Is this a demo Sting made to share with Andy and Stewart when they were selecting cuts for GHOST?

I always loved "Secret," esp. where it sits between Andy's song "Omegaman" and Stewart's "Darkness." A great trio of songs.

  • totally agree.

Those last three songs knock me out. Completely underrated by the fans and sadly ignored by the band on the reunion tour.

  • I agree all three songs fit together very well.

  • Very Nice.

  • One of my favorite Police songs, yet I've never heard this demo. Thanks so much for sharing!!

  • can i get audio for this

  • did you ever get audio for this? If so, pls advise.

  • i never did actually

  • Absolutely no production value whatsoever and it's still totally badass. Thanks for sharing. This is a real gem.

  • can you send me the audio of this

  • bloody brilliant...thanks for posting

  • This is one of my favourites and this version just shows how great the police are. Shame this and omegaman wasn't on the set list for the tour!

  • Hi All.. I'm new to this but all I can say is WOW! Two things... I have Last Exit - Sessions and Synchronicity Demos, on tape. Gimme tips and thoughts to get them to you and of course how to get me a more permanent copy of this stuff. PS - I sang with Sting on stage, 1996 Sydney State Theatre and I feel so much better telling you all :-)

  • Superbe chanson.

  • The real magic of The Police is in the demo tapes, the b-sides, the non-hits songs on the albums and the live performances - besides, of course, the regular hits that everyone knows.

I can't describe that thing that Andy, Stewart and Gordon create besides sheer magic.

  • i think so, and this album seems to have no much hits

    lüv it

  • @gordonS2 Same is true with Beatles, et. al.

  • Did the Police ever perform this song live? I can't find a live version on youtube.

  • they did play it live, but rarely...there was some live audio of it up a while ago, but im not sure if it's taken down now.

  • thanks! happy christmas :P

  • Ghost In The Machine was a great album all the way through

  • This song always reminds me of a Shamanistic journey... the journey could be any kind of journey, mental revelation, one that has aprofound effect on your life and who you are... This is a fantastic demo thanks for sharing it!

  • This sounds killer! Love this version!

  • Yeah i agree, this is a really cool version, and it's a demo at that.

  • Thanks for this demo... I made my first secret journey in '84...oops not a secret anymore. Lots of secret journeys...

  • Yeah, now think about everybody having their own secret journey, everyone trying to be a holy man, and you'll see the kinds of journeys and plots of your officials and enemies alike.

  • harmonics are pretty sweet

  • Best version of the song EVER!

  • Oh my GOD!!! This is favourite police song ever - and I had heard a rare extended 12" version of it years ago which I have never been able to find but this is WICKED!!!! Thanks a HUGE lot!!!! And for the Don't You Believe me demo - WICKED!!!!

  • Well they better put the 12" version on the alleged new box set! Any further word on that thing?

  • wwoow and what's the version you heard??? I would love to hear that too... let me know if you find it..

  • Been looking for it for 15 years!!! Someone I know found it in a rare records store but I've never been able to find out where it came from. I haven't heard about the new box set but I HAVE heard they're in the studio and it looks like we're going to get a studio album next year :- )

  • Nice thanks - probably one of my favorite Police tunes...nice to hear this arrangement.

  • These demos are a great insight into how Sting first conceived these songs. Some of the instruments sound very dated now but what shines through is Sting's voice. I've often read articles by other artists on how he could deliver great vocals almost on the first take.

    Thanks POLICEchout.

  • Actually the B side of the 'Every little thing she does is magic is 'Shamballe' and the 'Ghost in the machine' live DVD doesn't have secret journey on it, or atleast not my version!

  • Thanks Kyte22...I will check it out

  • does is magic is 'Shamballe' and the 'Ghost in the machine' live DVD doesn't have secret journey on it, or atleast not my version!

  • It kinda sucks without Andy. I think Andy OWNS the song.

  • What the hell. where does it all come from. I'm still looking for the live version of this amazing tune. Anybody know where it is?

  • These are Sting's home demos from before GITM was recorded...this could be considered an 'old school' music leak...

  • There's a life version on the "Ghost in the Machine" live DVD, and there's another one on the B side of the "Every Little thing she does is Magic" promo single.

  • A new verse? And no fancy fading/wind/storm beginning? Can it be?

    It goes like:

"Now/who I could see the logic,

There has to be a plan.

You want to be with questions,

    You are a holy man."

Is this what the song is about? The Police wants us to go on a "Secret Journey" around the internet to find this "Love" we miss and hear the missing verse telling that we "Are a holy man"?

Is this genious, or am I sick?

    Thanks - Kyte

  • Very Nice.
