This is not just about learning and retaining information, it is about Christians developing spiritually. Sitting in a pew, silent, and taking notes on a lecture is of course one way, but the informal group discussions lead people to more depth of thought. It is a true-ism that when a person teaches something to someone else, he also teaches himself.

House2House's "How To Do A Workshop" video is well produced and makes some excellent points. The only thing I would add is that the main reason people forget what they hear is because they hear way too much. The key: Summarize your presentation in ten words or less. Repeat often.
