people were so ignorant back then. They all thought she was stupid because she played roles in which the characters portrayed dumb blondes exc.. they asked her to play a dumb girl.. so she did so, why would she play a smart women if they asked her not to. only the great actors are the ones who make the audience laugh. she was great.
Despite Olivier's stodgy direction, Marilyn gave a luminous performance in this and completely stole the film from him. At least he made sure that she was photographed magnificently--with more natural hair color and makeup than usual at the time.
The camera loved Marilyn, and she returned the favour. Her beautiful face glowed and her body movements that were so sensous were so natural they cast a spell on everyone, here even the miscast Laurance Olivier. Her star will always glow in the heavens.
She can't act! She's so awkward and at times she speaks unclearly and she seems kind of stoned. This lousy attempt at being a "serious" actress is an insult to Olivier.
She's suppose to be drunk in this scene. I think the fault with the movie is that there isn't much to the story. But... Olivier chose Marilyn for what she could bring to the part. He passed up the chance to cast his own wife (Vivien Leigh), who had appeared with him in the play.
i saw ur comment u posted on prince and the showgirl and u said that marilyn was a bad actress. incorrect! firstly she is one of the worlds most rememberd actresses. she is simply amzazing. olivier must think so for picking her for the part.
Are you kidding? Marilyn knocks Olivier off the screen. You could replace him with any leading male and the difference would be minor; replace Marilyn, and it wouldn't be the same film.
do you have the rest of this film.. you see i have every single film except this..soo. i was wondering if you would put it up. i would be mighty gratefull.. o and its not just for me.. but for the other fuewers that would like to see it:):)

Vivien Leigh would have looked too old for the part. I heard he regretted working with Monroe.
