  • only polish the combustion chamber of the head with a dremel and brush attachment not grind cause you will lose compression and avoid the valve seats.. Lighly grind and port only the exhaust ports for better flow of exhaust gases but usually on the intake ports you should avoid and not make smooth since the surface has a rough surface from factory to keep fuel molecules suspended tumbling in air for better aspiration and combustion.. Porting to much and you will lose power that the truth!

  • It costs over $2000 dollars because the equipment they use is expensive and needs to be paid off. Also, machine shops don't exactly get the same populations of customers that a corner shop does, so they need to make enough to pay the rent and their employees. That's why it costs $2000, if it's even that much. I just got my Crank fluxed and ground, and my block cleaned and honed for around $175.

  • this video is bullshit!!! you can make your car slower if you do it like that!To do it right you need a flow bench so you know to get the right flow out of your head. why do you think it costr over 2000$ to do a head right!! its not like this guy right here!

  • @hpdeskjetd1660 So, the people that have been doing this for the past 50 years without a flow bench have always made their cars slower? I wonder why they kept doing it than...

  • will this throw a check engine light?

  • @MrSweetleaf92 Yes lol

  • @curtknows101 100% will or maybe?

  • @MrSweetleaf92 Depends on the year of the vehicle, it may throw a code that will come and go, the maf is set and works with the computer and all of the information is set to work within certain parameters, by porting you will change the airflow dramatically just as if you were to put in a hotter cam, certainly cant tell you 100 percent without knowing the vehicle, but more than likely you will get a check engine light, and that doesnt mean that the engine will run worse, or wont, hope ths helps

  • @curtknows101 When you change the airflow it also changes the fuel rate and mixture, a carb and your fine, throttle body you probably jus get a light and keep trucking, computer controlled port injection and you very well may get thrown into a limp home mode, transmission shift probs, idle, rich or lean, the whole shebang may and prob will go down the tubes, port the heads and take it to a tuner and he will be able to dyno tune the programmer and your set to enjoy a few more ponies!!!

  • @curtknows101 1992 Mazda Miata. my uncle has a spare head and I work at a car dealership. one of the mechanics said he has ported a few and said he would teach me if i had a head.

  • Good video, chevy head design = fail

  • This sucks the wikipedia was way more informative

  • i want to see a video of somebody head polishing 2003 chevy 2.2 134 head and test it please

  • Messing with head ports without a flow bench to see if you're hurting or helping airflow is like grinding on a crankshaft without a micrometer.

I'm currently repairing/welding some messed up hemi heads messed up by someone with a die grinder and sandpaper rolls and it won't be cheap.

  • Anybody else picturing the camera dollying out to reveal Michael Winslow making those noises?

  • Just breakdown and pay for some CNC

  • Youre charging money for this? Guess everyones gotta make a buck.

  • I increased the whp on a stock 1975 Chevy 350 by 20 hp by porting and polishing the heads and intake while replacing head gaskets. A very noticable power increase.

  • practice on some old junk heads first people, practice first, thank you for the video

  • dentist office

  • OK - For the sake of the vid , This is a very basic demonstration of a casting flash cleanup on a SBC head. (captain obvious!?)

A 3/8" and 1/2" double cut 'flame' stone/burr are the primary weapons of choice r on most small and big block Chev / Ford / Chrysler.

SLOW SPEED only. If you use maximum speed , you will overheat the burr and dull it quickly. A better / more accurate finish is achieved using minimal trigger on the die grinder. (pneumatic)

Unless you know how - basic clean up ONLY!!!

  • @literbikedoc Right on!! but even with patience a beginner can gasket match and smooth andget great results, though i would recommend getting a feel for the grinder on a junkhead first, if its a 66 race hemi numbers matching charger of course let a pro handle it lol

  • Ha.. People seem to forget that oil passageways exist in the cylinder head..

  • It works but i have seen alot of heads fucked up from people doing that.

  • Reminds me of the dentist!

  • what kind of bit are you using?

  • this kind of work is a real art form ....if your good at it ,some people just seem to have the knack of it

  • what would you call that type of end for the pneumatic grinder? A sanding ...?

  • does this make you have alot more torque and power than usual

  • not alot more but you should feel a differance also faster throttle reponse and even improve milage sins the engine dosent have to work as much to get the air/fuel mixture to the cylinder

  • @Muddrman300 mainly a little more torque than horsepower , but yea it does help.

  • @Muddrman300 would say alot but u will notice...a tall skinny port will boost torque, while a short wide port helps hp,i dont polish ports for the streets, the slight rough left from the carbide cutter helps keep fuel atomized for a better burn, wich helps both hp & torque.the keys not so much in how much they flow but how they flow

  • @caponeauto Negative. It allows for fuel to condensate. A smoother airflow allows for consistent and higher charge velocity. The quicker the air and atomized fuel can reach your combustion chamber, the better. Turbulence is NOT what you want regardless of power range.

  • @MisterBaz1 Thats true on fuel injected engines, but not on carburetor applications

  • @btownmxer spot on mate

  • @Muddrman300 not usually on bottom end infact you can actually make it fall on its face but more mid to top end power if you just clean them up some instead of tryin to make it bigger you can get a little bit more power but its alot smoother across the powerband and makes it a little more responsive and more mpg etc

  • @CRF250RGUY depends on how big the drops are. mirrior finish or not. it doesnt matter. 800 grit is fine as shit. might as well be mirror finish.

  • I wouldnt be polishing intakes to a very smooth surface or it will cause air fuel mixture to form droplets. Well thats my belief.

  • @CRF250RGUY if it was going to it would. thats why people port heads and gain a shit ton of power. and then theres guys like you who miss out cuz you fear a few droplets

  • eastwood has the sanding bits

  • Definitely do alot of research and practice on a junk head before attempting to do this for the first time on a good set of heads. This just shows the basics, there's alot more to it than just removing material. Port area - vs - valve area, throat radius and blending, short side radius, even offset grinding to induce swirl. It's technical if you want to get the most out of a set of heads!

  • do you do this to the exuast ports and intake or just 1?

  • both. better flow coming in. and better coming out. you want to smooth the walls with a rotational pattern up the walls clockwise or counterclockwise will going in and out of the port to got the air and fuel mixing better. flowing better. and making that extra hp

  • whats the best way to learn how to do that

  • @horton72340 by doing it

  • alright ill have to try it , how many heads have u done?

  • @horton72340 1 set. never got to putm on a car. money got tight. now im gonna be working on a set of 350 heads and some Subaru 2.2 heads. just dont use a carbide bit if its your first attempt. they take off way to much way to fast.

  • nice , nice yea i herd its better to use the other one he mentioned , thanks for the info dude

  • @horton72340 id like to be nosey and ask what kinda heads youll be doing. if your still into the mopar route?? if thats the case find some 302 casting heads from late 80s ram or diplomat. they are hi compression high flow. swirl port heads. done right they can take a 300 horse motor to 400. i think theyre like 52 cc heads. the way the flow is just nasty on a built small block car.

  • haha yea man no problem , thats a crazy amount of power! , im gonna do a set of magnum heads for my 360 in the truck got em for 20 bucks a peice off my dad so yea i needa practice on some 350 heads , r magnum heads good ? i heard they are?

  • When I am finish porting my head, I will get it glass blasted to get a rough surface. That way the fuel wont form droplets on the walls.

  • Carb cleaner or sit the head in acetone

  • i would love to do this type of stuff for a living

  • It's actually a dirty dangerous job. All those metal shavings go everywhere. And if you don't have goggle eye protection, they'll eventually find there way into your eye (ouch). The tool noise is high, and the emissions from all the grinding and polishing are not good for you. Make sure you have good eye and ear protection, and a good respirator.

  • @Marvosa me to lol...

  • if you know how to time your engine this is the best way to get good performance out your engine and cheaper than other ways but time consuming. just dont over do it

  • The port jobs I've read online that were tested on a flow bench would have added about 20 hp, so the difference can be significant.

  • gasket matching does help

  • is this acually hard to do? it seems simple, just seems that you need to take it easy, and its better then to grind off too little then too much right?

  • You need to know where to take metal off and the proper amounts. It looks simple and if you know some basics, it's not hard but if you don't know what you're doing, you can ruin a perfectly good set of cylinder heads.

  • is varies from how modified your engine is..

if its racing/hi performance street. its REALLY gunu help. if its stock youll still notice improvements..

  • I have the vale stems just inside my openings is it still alright to do mine, just being careful not to damage the seating bits.

  • beautifull job...

    saludos desde chile south america
