  • Great song and great performance.

  • この曲はいろんなアレンジがあって、本当に楽しめますね。

  • i've followed Kyoju's music as far as i can remember. Great performance!

  • Everything in this video is just awe-inspiring. From the incredible musicianship, the fantastic composition, to that legendary hair.

  • That cello almost sounds like a saxophone around 2:05. And this song is wonderful.

  • 完璧

  • 素晴らしい!!最高!

  • @zerikuri 私は同意する

  • Nice video! Greetings from San Francisco.

  • i like 1000knives

  • The cello in this could be a saxophone. So good!

  • It's hard to believe there are only 3 instruments playing. They make the sound very whole. It's like an orchestra.

  • It's hard to believe there are only 3 instruments playing. They make the sound very whole. It's like an orchestra.

  • Is there a DVD with this concert?

  • @EscargoTouChaud There is. It's called "Ryuichi Sakamoto Trio World Tour 1996 - Complete Version". It seems pretty hard to find though.

  • He should be famous. This is incredible.

  • @confettiful well, he's certainly famous in Japan, but instrumental music hasn't experienced much popularity in America.

  • Someone happen to know where i can find the sheet music for this song?

  • Amazing, and who here thinks it sounds like something from Final Fantasy?

  • i am poor in english, but i managed to write what i want to say.

the tittle thousand knives was an initial passage cited from

Misérable miracle written by Henri Michaux

  • @LunaMoon0925

It's thanks to people like you that knowledge is spread. I just looked up Henri Michaux , I'm ashamed to say that I didn't even know about him. It totally makes sense that an artist like Sakamoto would reference his works.

The "Thousand Knives" are used to describe his experience with the drug mescaline (a psychedelic drug derived from the peyote cactus).

  • That cello sounded so BEAUTIFUL

  • @/s117godd: Pentatonic scale. Very typical for asian music.

  • Real nice music

  • excellent... beautiful.

  • excellent... beautiful.

  • excellent.

  • I like that the highest rated comment seems to get higher rated every day. The world should know about Sakamoto.

  • Can anybody tell me what key he's playing in? I'm not musically trained but I rarely hear this set of notes. Is this the sound that's produced when you play mostly on sharps?

  • I like thousand knives very much

  • Ryuichi should make a tutorial!Haha:D

  • @ThePianofrog : haha yeah !

  • very jazy

  • i can see why this is called a thousand knives

  • I wish I had more than one working ear bud- I want this in both of my ears....

  • 0:57 - 1:30 what an amaizing part the whole piece is amaizing ^^ but this part is special

  • Who are the other two members of the Trio? Sakamoto's music is fantastic, but it's even better with them complementing it.

  • It's amazing what someone with talent refined by years of development does. Astonishes the soul, and shows how humans really do have the potential to do just about anything.

  • おいおい、これはかっこ良すぎるやろこれは・・

    初代のテクノっぽいのも良いけど、これは・・・・

    やばい。AWESOME!!!

  • wow

  • amazing・・・!

  • 美しい

  • Where can I buy DVD/CD of this "Trio World Tour 1996"?

    I must get one!

  • the original song of the music,Thousand Knives is in his first original album called Thousand Knives, which was released in 1977.the cover of the SONG is in his Ymo album,BGM.and perhaps commons will release his sheet music soon.@Animemindchamp @Jenq89 @WarleyRoadStudios

  • awesome!

  • HIGH SENSE .

  • There is always something interesting to listen to in Ryuichi's music. He is my favourite musician because it sounds like he wants to find new kinds of melodies and styles and he does frequently! The violin solo is magical, I think it works better than the original YMO recording.

  • @All4GayUSA

Ha ha it was just a personal opinion.

Just like the more upbeat tempo of the original version.

But overall he's one of the greatest inspiring musicians, no doubt!

  • great!!

  • COOL

  • PERFECTION

  • there are times when a piano, cello, violin trio would be lovely going, well, anywhere.

  • anyone have the music or the score of this piece?

  • can't find the music -_-"

the only one i can find though is the YMO version

rly love this version. it's so beautiful to listen

  • Would you be able to give me the sheet music for the YMO version please, or anything close to this version?

    Thanks :-)

  • @blupeeps1 /05 sheet music book.

  • Is this where I can find the sheet music for this song?

  • Comment removed

  • ))感動~

  • I was able to find the DVD ISO on a russian site. You could try downloading that and extracting the audio tracks with some kind of utility, each chapter of the DVD contains a single piece.

  • A thousand knives stands for an electric shock in Japanese. On the cover of the album you see him with a light holding it above a filled bath tub.

  • Did they ever release a CD of these concerts?

  • In Japan, but you can try to find them on Ebay

  • I can't wait to see him in concert in November!

  • wait where is he performing?

  • Best version of Thousand Knives from Ryuichi Sakamoto

  • @S0ulcreat1ve Also my favourite version of Merry Christmas Mr.Lawrence was performed at this concert. Definitely a dvd worth having.

  • @DonJuanDeMarco2

I Have to have it! What is the title of the DVD?

  • @S0ulcreat1ve 'The Ryuichi Sakamoto Trio : World Tour 1996'. Also a CD available.

  • @S0ulcreat1ve I so agree!

  • towards the end, Sakamoto seems to be enjoying himself and i can tell hes tired(look at the end, he flopped his hands down)

  • The title Thousand Knives sounds old but this song is jazzy(i think its wrong spelling), unlike the title. Bravo!

  • Does anyone know why this is called Thousand Knives? Just curious.

  • this is very nice i love it

  • jazzay

    love it

  • such an amazing cello performance

do you think that could be played by a sax?

  • This song could be played by anything!

  • how come the world doesn't know about this guy, he is a musical genius, a modern day Beethoven without the deafness.

  • ture, actually he is really handsome

  • Too right, I was introduced to his music 16 years ago and seen him live twice(Trio World Tour) and yet, I have never seen him promoted what so ever.

But, real beauty is not spoken with words.

  • I completely agree.

  • @Sparksterfu because he is non caucasian .

  • @Sparksterfu the world does!

  • @Sparksterfu let the genius die and people will start worshiping him

  • Sakamoto is a musical genius of this time.

  • The three are excellent musicians. Ryuichi rocks.

  • his hair keeps on moving =P

  • I know, nobody cares about that, but the cello was played by Jacques Moerelenbaum, who has also plyed with Sting on his famous private concert in Italy the 9-11-2001.

  • I think the piece itself is from the late '70s... there're quite a few live performances by YMO on youtube.

  • It appeared on his first solo album Thousand Knives (released beforethe first YMO album)

  • You really can't compare the YMO performances with this one though... same song, different genres.

It's astounding how may variations Sakamoto has done with this song.

  • cool he mixed modern classic with pieces of jazz style. Its so amazing that he is able to keep his jazz groove alive while playing this complex arrangement!

  • I love Sakamoto Ryuichi, all his music is wonderful and beautiful, I hope he does a concert in Chicago, if not one day I 'll have to go to Tokyo and hear him, he has an amazing style.

  • 人をこのように驚かせます...彼の展開は詳しく徹底的なことと言えます

  • wow, he's actually kind of amusing... Something not expected from a pianist. When I first saw him, I was thinking more like Yiruma! Oh well, he's growing on me. I liked the way he played the strings along with the piano! <3 that's cool

  • I can't get enough listening his music!! Simply great!!

  • I love his style of music!

    :D

I can't get enough watching his performance.....

  • この時の教授、めちゃくちゃカッコイイな◎

  • 素晴らしい!!千のナイフはジャズっぽい曲だと思ったが、こういうバージョンは素敵だ!

  • This is my new theme song.

  • LEGENDARY.

  • I love (LOOOVE) hearing a cello play jazz. It's amazing and I wonder why it doesn't happen more often.

  • coz only pr0z can do it right

  • Blame the bass guitar.

  • pretty nice suited for an RPG game or an anime wuhauha dope sjit !!!

  • Aww look how happy he iss.

    ^w^

  • Haha yeah. I love watching his bouncing hair keep time xD

I can kind of relate, cuz the greatest joy to me is playing the piano :)

  • That's some crazy piano technical skills.

  • It rocks.. More than any other piece of music :)

  • I have never heard this song be rendered with such amazing tempo transitions. His movement on the keys just leaves me jaw-dropped and amazed.

  • LOve so much this song...

    bravo sakamoto-san!!!!

  • this is really nice! i love it

  • I have a techno version of this song, I think it's the album version. It has these drums going in the background, and a couple guitar solos. I like this version better, but the guitar is pretty good on my version.

  • when i listen to this i can feel all the energy and some kind of feeling that i cannot explain all over me gives me the goosebumps, the song is somehow soft but gives you that sharp like feeling but then switches back to a soft pillow making it diverse and not boring. Just amazing how he composed this very good. Not only the piano but the violin and the cello gives even more a better "taste" to this fine piece.

  • I feel exactly the same way as you feel about this song!

sure gives me the goose bumps all over my body!

this song is soft, yet very hard that comes from the inside and shakes up your brain and body spiritually at the same time!!

  • It iiss just amazing!!!

Hardly imagine the sheet lokks like... = ="

  • Shieettt makes me go WOW WTF THIS SONG FUCKING ROCKS LOL.

No seriously, each time I listen, I go to the beat and get mad. Is that your final answer? Yes, my final answer: 6/5

  • I want to marry Sakamoto's hair.

  • I believe neither of them have reached a certain level of virtuosity, and the styles are distinct in certain ways that it would be unfair to compare them. That being said, there is no doubt Ryuichi Sakamoto is the much much much superior composer. If there was a level of virtuosity in being a composer, Ryuichi has reached that level long ago.

  • I get what you mean, but that's a tad bit harsh. D:

Ryuichi Sakamoto is by far a much better composer, compared to Akiko Yano. I have no idea why the very idea was brought up in the first place. How nice their songs are, however, depends on the person listening to the piece.

  • I can agree with you there, she might be a fantastic pianist and singer. Better to sing that our friend Ryuichi, but I wouldn't say betetr on the piano though.

  • A great singer? IMO her voice totally ruins her peices. Ryuichi is smart enough not to sing over his peices. Yeah I know her songs are meant to have the melody sung, but she could atleast higher a vocalist that has a decent voice.

  • Ok, what I said there was not to make people angry at me, seriously, i think Akino Yano had nothing to be in the YMO for, and as we can see, her "solo-career" is nothing compared to Ryuichi's.

  • Yeah, I understand, sorry for voicing my opinion so strongly. Lets enjoy this wonderful peice.

  • hire

  • I also find her voice rather grating. What's interesting is that it was not the way it is now on her earliest recordings such as her 1976 debut, Japanese Girl, in which she sings much more naturally and expressively.

  • The Trio world tour was amazing, i was lucky enough to see them in Melbourne, Australia...one of the best nights of my life.

  • That was great!!!

  • Excellent version!

  • the best

  • where can you find this version of the song?

cant find it i searched alot -- but its the old version

  • Cool, super cool, in fact sub-zero cool! This is such a brilliant take on the original. 5*'s

  • any chance to get this on a CD?

searched the web far and wide, up and down, to no avail. thanks a lot.

  • The CD is called 1996.

  • i have that CD but it dosn't include this track.

  • 坂本龍一は天才です。

  • I don't know why people think so, what she makes is garbage to this kind of music.

  • Akiko Yano is a fantastic pianist and singer.

As a composer, Ryu Sakamoto might be superior to her.

  • I find this very strange, you could have a huge orchestra playing a song from a world known composer, such as Mozart for example, and it doesn't sound and will never sound better than these three fellows.

Ryuchi Sakamoto just makes outstanding music!

  • these people are artists. people like mozart only just did their jobs, but weren't artists =P

  • Actually, if you've ever heard Mozart's music or seen any of his musicals, you'd see he was genius. Music wasn't just his job, it was his life.

Sakamoto is also a wonderful composer!

  • lets just say, they are all great :)

  • Yes... Can't agree with you more. Thanks for saying that ;) exactly what I have in my mind for Mr. Sakamoto.

  • whoa... love this song

  • Awesome~

  • This guy has MAD soul.

  • word.

  • i want his baby. he is so fucking sexy.

  • Miwakutéki na! Great song! Wirklich!

  • Awesome rendition of this song.

also, I like how it looks like Sakamoto is giving an odd stare at nothing at 2:50.

  • Seconded

  • Thats amazing, its the same YMO song but yet so different :D i heard rumours that YMO was going to regroup, is that true? Love their songs and Sakamoto's OBVIOUSLY! :D

  • sure, ymo was reunion last year.however it seems not to always work together.

  • This is one of the things that give some meaning in my life, what else that gives me meaning in my life, his other songs ofcourse!

  • This was very beautiful, but I gotta say I think 1000 knives sounds better with the whole Yellow Magic Orchestra! Still great in a different way though!

  • ..the tenderness of the snow balanced with a strong fight with balls....good feeling..

  • strong fight with balls?! good feeling? Uh, I think you have destroyed my opinion about this song by writing that.

  • tenderness and fight..snown falling and a loud snown-ball fight..is a good way for image this notes in sequence..:))

  • Ah, ok then =d you win, you both=D

  • wonderful!!

  • i love Sakamoto Ryuichi's musics!

but i especially love the trio versions!

the original version for this song is quite good too becuase it has awsome heavy guitar and piano improvisons and creates mysterious atmosphere. but this jazzy version gives the melody more richness and depth. The violin and cello harmonize excellently and the rhythm the piano creates weaves through them nicely.

    in other words,

    THIS IS REALLY AWSOME!

  • 屌

  • makes me dance in mah chair

  • This video clip is sooooooooo nice that I almost started to dance!!

    Thanx!!

  • Same, and I even didn't stop when they changed the jazz part back to the lyrical texture.

Wonder did you improvised or played as written...

Coz' I really want to try do it, it was impressive you know.. =]

  • Awesome

  • cool!!
