Why do ye think it's sad or strange to want to escape the body?? Am I missing something here? I don't get why ye have a problem with it. So what if they want to escape the meat of the body? So what if they want to flee the cartesian soul? Do you think the way we live now is the only way of experiencing? Just because we are used to living in meat bags with one subjective outlook on life, doesn't make it "ridiculous" to try and find another way to experience it.
you should watch our whole postgenderism series, because it is actually critical of postgenderism. we try to point to some of the criticisms you make here, as well as some other more bizarre insights.
James Hughes had this to say in an interview we did with him on this subject: "Your preferencing of the authenticity of "real" interaction will seem quaint in thirty years. The interactions of people with nano-neural interfaces will be inconceivably more "real," deep, profound and intense than the existing meat puppets, staring through water balls, pawing with meat hands, driven by hormone triggers, and then basking in oxytocin pleasure once their reproductive imperative is fulfilled."
At a young age (3 even) I wanted to be a boy because I thought it was unfair that I didn't get to choose. For the sake of rebellion and curiosity, being a boy seemed like a better idea, so I dressed in my boy cousin's clothes. I forced my mom to comply with my demand.
The idea of refusing to be the biological gender you are could be a very Freudian concept. Thankfully I got over it.
Transexualism and transhumanism is a desire to transcend what we are wired as; we fail badly at escaping it.
/me looks into his glass bawll and is shocked by vision of preapostdegendrismus. but the right hand of lightness will make it all alleft... sorry for being unproductivealy quizling.
once you introduce the remote CONTROL the magic wears off, and the Great Distraction (we call life) either blows up or decays away, slowly, bit by bit
An interesting subject - I do fear for the future - some horrifying vistas are opening up - and I'm glad that you were able to give this overview of the issues and your thoughts on them, this is the kind of debate we need to have, unfortunately the masses are being sold the X Factor to occupy what's left of their minds.
I've been thinking about this lately. Hypergenderism in physical display seems like an inevitable and pathetic response to the de-gendering of various domains of life. My students often seem utterly indifferent to gender. They form packs and relate to each other based on other things. At the same time, many practice hypergenderism in physical display, body sculpting, plastic surgery, clothing, etc. The body is "tricked out" like a car, an expression of taste, but oddly irrelevant.
"Hypergenderism in physical display seems like an inevitable and pathetic response to the de-gendering of various domains of life."
I'm not sure it is merely a response to any de-gendering -- In Arab/Muslim countries that are still gender domained there is, I've heard (cannot verify yet) that there is more of a market for things like breast enhancement and penile enhancement. (I suppose when you're wearing a burka your tits and eyes are the only thing that have a chance of showing).
The world is most certainly getting dumber and dumber, though its mostly in the west. I am the last smart person standing. I'm makeing up my mind what to do with the others.
@davfritz..oh, leave them alone the quixotic flux of nature..they thought Einstein was "slow", there are geniuses losing "it" everywhere..also two civilizations, maybe the Amazons, the Isle of Lesbos..the Swedish govt., just a joke, oh that epigenetics. In the future I think we will push for more choices, more freedom..I think career will radically change and the way we do what we do, conduct our lives in general.
I'm saddened by your lack of confidence in science, and humanity.
If we're so unworthy, then isn't it over?
If we can't steer our own destiny, how can we be trusted to collectively do anything?
And any technology has the potential for abuse.
Do you want to take away my guns? My encryption?
Technological freedom for all!
Neuro and Biological freedom!
You can have your world, but I will have mine.
I'm getting a nerve array implanted just like Dr Warwick.

Thank you for taking the time to explore the postgenderism issue with us.. It is a very important topic and yet it is also very strange we know, ...

Reminds me of the Ghost in the Shell series. The way it incorporated this particular aspect was quite amazing.

Yes, those who want to completely escape the meat cage are often sad and strange...
Human beings are diverse. I.Q. is NOT the only indicator of adaptability...or of humanity for that matter.
SO GLAD YOU MENTIONED JOAN ROUGHGARDEN. I find her writing very intriguing too.
The addition of Valerie's viewpoint makes everything a lot more multi-faceted.
Another thought provoking vid. Good stuff.

Judging by the way people use plastic surgery now, the future won't be Postgenderism, it will be Hypergenderism.
