In Mortal Kombat 2, its revealed that Sub Zero had a younger brother also named Sub Zero. Scorpion then pledges to protect the younger Sub Zero as payment for killing his older brother.

It's painfully obvious that this is all allegory. The classic man v. man story used to portray the personal struggle which is unduly but certainly forcefully applied to the individuals who bear the yoke of oppression under every totalitarian system. Thus the only recourse that could be had is the one of finality, the great equalizer: death. In this case meted out by Sub-zero. The name itself is an obvious reference to death. Zero, absolute zero, cold, death, nothingness, etc

Indeed. Also I think it is a reference to his cold-heartedness. He is brutal and he himself has no heart right? I can't remember if Scorpio ever rips his heart out in the game, but he shouldn't be able to because it's so cold. My theory anyway. Tundra would've been a good name too though. I never knew that. It's not as mean but there is depth there, especially when one considers permafrost's permanent nature and contrasts this withSub-zero's loyalty to friends and vengeance.He knows but 2 things

well as you saw in this video. sub-zero does show mercy,(still unreliable). he has also made quick aliances with those that work against the forces of evil.(and no his heart has never been ripped out). he is not really a killer. but more of a mercenary(kills who he is supposed to). the only one that sub-zero killed in cold-blood was hanzo hasashi but that was the now wraith noob saibot(sub-zero the elder)who was the murderer. Sub-zero(this one) is actually a merciful fighter.
