wow, i am really surprised here, now i know where did Amos bring all the "songs are people" talking, Kate is edgy, Tori really stretches things out to the extremes.
I just heard today "sensual world" and I thought how much she was forward artistically, I think groups like "afrocelt" make this kind of music ( celtic melodies with marked rhythmic patterns ) ten years after kate!!!
i would love it if kate worked on an album with either tori amos, bjork or trent reznor.either of those would be fantastic.a truely fantastic musician!!!
Thanks for posting this!. Very interesting indeed. My absolute favourite kate album of them all. She is so erudite and eloquent, but yet not the least bit stuck up or arrogant. A true artist.
dont you think kate looks so different in various stages of her career?in the early footage, she can look quite cute..say 9/10.but in photoshoots in her prime she reigned supreme as the most stunning woman on the planet.nobody can rival her eyes, cheekbones, enchanting speaking voice and ladylike manner....
One of the wisest women on the planet no doubt. I particularly love the way she said all she wanted to do is make an album, I can relate to that so much.
She's so sweet! How can someone this talented be so down to earth? You'd expect some kind of diva like like behaviour from her and nothing could be further from the truth. She's just like the girl next door. And yet she's patently a genius. What a conundrum!
I will never forget driving across the California-Mexico border heading south from San Diego in 1986 and Weathering Heights came on the radio. I was captivated by the shrill of Kate Bush's voice as I made that late night trip. She is such a rare and unique jewel...a glistening vibrant jewel.
She actually confounds many people even more by not acting tormented and aloof as people expect from geniuses in interviews- she is very sweet (and intuitive and intelligent of course). She has given us this fairytale body of work which is much more than those who still snigger at the idea of her in a leotard deserve.
and in proving herself wrong she must therefore not be be perfect. but then again that would make her perfect again, so the logic you used creates circular reasoning, well done.
Look at her... when she says 'Throughout history people have always gained inspiration from the sea, from mountains, from the sky', just LOOK at her body language; she's actually losing herself in her own thoughts and images as she speaks. What a woman... and 'The sensual world' is the sexiest song ever written.
Kate is surpisingly sane and rational for the creative genius she is and from seeing her dance in the first Wuthering Heights video you would expect her to be a barking mad ranting lunatic but shes just a sweet country girl. She has natural inner beauty that I wish all woman had
lol i agree after seeing wuthering heights u would think she was one of those scary people that would run out of bushes and attack u in ur car...but shes actually very down to earth! KATE BUSH RULZ
Personally I don't think any of us are 'missing the point' - like a true work of art Kate is many different things to many different people - and thats why I adore her! She is all that has been mentioned, and a hell of a lot more :)
Kate Bush is a true 'Wildwoman', but she is a long way off from a 'traditional female' ... just take a listen to the lyrics she writes - she confronts, callenges and ripps at the accepted sensibilities. If anything her brave approach to challenging accepted norms has been long sold to the money man, ironically in the name of 'girl-power' lol.
LOVE to you Kate, you changed my life at the age of 12 and I will never forget your profundity or ur grace. xxx
I used "traditional" loosely for lack of a better word. In 1978 she sung about stuff that was only written about in hidden diaries. But here in 2007 she seems almost traditional. She does not curse, she hates today's celebrity culture and in an interview last year regrets the decline of the concept album due to downloading. I guess what I am trying to say is that she has class and is the opposite of the "in your face" "reality TV" ethos of today.
She says she wanted to make a more "female" album. To me she has always been for lack of a better word the most "traditionally" feminine artist out there.
her music used to be really projective/masculine if you think about it. i think the better word to use would be "receptive" rather than feminine. look back - she wasn't doing what most other female artists were doing when she started out. nina hagen is similar example.
I guess it's a a matter of perception. Those vocals can in no way ever be masculine to me. Using classical romance novels, ballet and classical dance was pretty feminine back then. Riot girrls and emo among many other things have mixed things up since. See more in my answer to Emeranneee. Hate the 500 char answer limit.
you're missing the point - it's not about the vocals or her dancing. it's about the musical freedom she explored and the off kilter energy to back it up. she was a rare pioneer in that she was a woman. it's still a male dominated industry... not only was she not docile - she was a true original - something women really weren't back then.
i hate the 500 character answer limit too! have you listened to 'the dreaming'? that's her most "confrontational" album and probably a great example of what i'm trying to convey. also, some of her darkest and controversial lyrics are on "never forever" - you just didn't have other women writing about such taboo things... even on her debut she went to places that only males were expected to.
Different subject matter most certainly. Unique that is the reason we are trouble describing her. Dreaming the most "confrontational" yep. Take "Breathing" the point is gotten across strongly in but in a less to my ears anyway confrontational way then say L7 or 7 Year Bitch. This is not a knock on those bands "Pretend Were Dead" is one of my all time faves.
You might be different then me but find that I like or dislike a song before I know what it is about. My guess on the 500 char limit is that nobody dreamed YouTube would be used for this purpose. They figured it would just be a bunch of teens so they were trying to prevent somebody from writing "fuck" 10000 times.

We must remember that Kate Bush is a true English Rose, so if she wants to make a more feminine album, I think that she is capable.

I prefer Kate Bush's blend of very strong character and
" 'traditionally' feminine" music over the heaps of fake "plastic" Hoochie-like, thin-as-a-stick psuedo-sluts that fill the pop-music scene today.
