The Provos were never defeated. The Provos chose in 2004 to lay down arms and decommision. There had been a ceasefire from 1994 to 1996 but the British government were not engaging fully in peace talks. As soon as their financial centre was destroyed by the 'defeated provos' they got straight down to business talking and within 2 years there was the Good Friday Agreement.

Hmm a version of history that admits key details. Since when was it an aim of the Provos for MM to sit in Stormont? Yet they have put their arms beyond use (give or take the odd bank job). There is no United Ireland or British withdrawal the Provos did not achieve their aims. Secondly this bombing against a civilian target, led to the bomber being caught, tried and convicted. The British could have killed him but spared his life.

They were not defeated, the army council is still there incase they are required for service again. A United Ireland is inevitable a brief look at the NI census will tell you that. Their will be a United Ireland once their is a nationalist majority, that will be 15 years from now at most. Sinn Féin are the biggest party in Ireland so they recognise with laying down arms will not only bring unity but also have them administering power. By the way, the bomber was released after the G.F.A.

As much as I hate to give credit to the British pilots and men arming the AA guns they were some brave men.
You also have to give credit where credit is due. Without US support you would have lost the Battle of Britain. I'm not sure but I don't think you guys would have had the means to launch a successful invasion of mainland Europe.

The battle of Britain was fought in the air, I wouldn't exactly call it an attempted invasion by the Nazis. If a ground war had ensued, the Nazis would have taken you lot out, yous where on your knees before the americans entered the war, Churchil was travelling back and forth over the atlantic practicaly begging the Americans to join the war, the only attempt yous made on your own was when you had to retreat from dunkirk. You weren't on your own on d-day thats why you AND the allies won..

I paid tribute to those Irish men who fought against the Nazis when I praised the Irish Guards and others.And it is quite fair to call republicans of that period Nazis. The fact is they did support Hitler. Note I am not referring to all Irish people. Yet people came on here and called the English Cunts and made justifications for the Docklands atrocity. It is that sort of contempt for an entire people that led to this sort of murder, i.e. racism. Martin Dillon and others have mentioned this.

Its unbelievably easy to defend Ireland not entering WW2 we had just finished fighting a tyranic nation and had semi freedom for 26 of our counties. The IRA commanders did meet with Nazis to discuss a possible invasion of Ireland but the IRA made it clear they did not want to replace one evil with another (Britain with Germany) . This is similar to the 1916 Rising i.e. "We serve neither king nor keiser but Ireland!"

Well all those you mentioned were freed by the court of appeal. Plus the UK has elections including in NI so yes it is democratic. The Provos however tortured and killed people in Kangaroo courts (Paddy Flood for instance an innocent man). Also anyone who spoke out against them got beaten or shot. I agree but they were imprisoned due to how the state reacted wrongly to attacks by the provos. They were not locked up just because the state felt like attacking Irish people. I agree about other atrocities, however the state put the butchers in prison where they belonged. The IRA committed the majority of atrocities against civilians in the conflict. This video of Docklands is just one example of targeting civilians.

No, statistics show that the most attacks/murders of civilians were from the unionist paras, such as the UVF.
My Dad grew up in the Troubles and his friend was 12 when he was shot by a drunken british soldier getting. Although their were a lot of atrocities on the Republican side too, such as the balcombe street gang and obviously the recent attacks this year, it is unfair to say that the IRA commited the majority of the violence as when you think about it who started the troubles.

Are you for real? A bomb attack that kills civilians by being placed outside their place of work is an attack on civilians. Now look at the CAIN website by University of Ulster as a source. The Provos from 69-97 killed far more civilians than the British fact. As to collusion that's bollocks as well as the Brits put loads of loyalists in prison at times more loyalists were in nick than republicans. At Enniskillen, London, Warrington etc Provos targeted civilians FACT. Not in 1903 either.

Pal, the SAS's aim was to wipe out the IRA. they couldnt do it. The British MOD released a report in August 2007 where it admitted it could not defeat the IRA and thats why it went into negotiations.

When the IRA planted bombs in Oxford in 1993, they were diffused in the street. Then, a year later they found an unexploded device....in a children's toy shop. You're trying to tell me the IRA was only interested in economic targets? There's some logic to destroying a barracks or targetting politicians, but blowing up a kids' toy shop is just sick. If the IRA believed in democracy, they'd see that most of Northern Ireland wants to remain with the UK and they should respect that.

If you understood democracy you'd realise you can't divide a country against the wishes of the majority of its population. Ireland was divided illegally and thus NI is an illegal state with gerrymandered borders.

There has to be a cut-off point somewhere, otherwise no-one can move on - borders have changed so many times over the years that everyone could claim ownership of most places. Otherwise, you need to give Alsace back to the Germans, Karelia back to the Finns, Corsica to the Italians etc. The borders were carved up long before any of us were born and if NI wants a future, it has to be resolved under the territories that exist now. Same for Israel and Palestine. Land or peace? Not a hard choice.
