  • the girls may be talented and pretty, but why do we keep promoting the hawaiian or polynesian culture in guam? have we lost pride in our own dances? so what if they dont appear similar to the dances of polynesia. we come from a different history than the polynesians. we are only feeding their ego by performing their dances.

  • @CHAM0RRITO: I understand how you feel and your thoughts are very important. However, I promote these dances only because there are many dance groups for the chamorro dances and competition gets very nasty at times. At least, with the dances of my group, there is rarely any competition and the girls don't have to feel pressured because of it. Besides, the group loves it and it is only right that they are learning aside from their own culture. But, I will consider your thoughts.

  • @omka443 what kind of competition? competition gets nasty? I have nothing against hawaiian/polynesian dances. they are beautiful and exotic. but they mislead Chamorro youth into thinking that Chamorro dances should look similar. I laugh at the so called Ancient styles that have been created by certain dance groups. Chamorro dances has a very hispanic component and that is being lost in the new Ancient styles. Just because our dances are hispanic influenced does not make them not island dances.
