Comparing this to Lea's "On My Own", I'm amazed how much her voice has matured in ten years. While she was already exceptional, now her voice is divine. There were many things the 25th anniversary concert got wrong, but casting Lea wasn't one of them.
@tybashdracistfaggot Truth be told, she was/is not a "horrible singer". It's just that Lea is better. Is it my imagination that when FR played Eppy, most people didn't care that she died? But once Lea played the role, it seemed that they wanted Eppy to live and Marius to choose her over Cossette. That Lea. She could sure screw things up. Just kidding. Blessings be upon thee.
@QueenPolly If you've actually heard Lea Salonga speak you'd find that she speaks with more of an English accent rather than an American one. There aren't really accents when singing, I find, it's enunciation. If you feel it ruined the song though it's your prerogative. Personally I thought she did a fantastic job.
I much prefer her singing this to "On My Own", which always fails to move me and always succeeds in irritating me. This shows me why she has the respect and legendary status. This is beautiful.
lol cant believe people dislike this . . .. imagine a 10 seconds long applause of audience is already a great honour for singers and actors , ,, while this one acquired more than 30s xD . . . whats my point? those people who 'does not' like this ver are plain deaf.
Its so cool to be able to see her as Eponine 16 years ago and now be able to watch her just last year as Fantine. She is absolutely wonderful as both of them, wonderful and interesting portrayals of iconic characters. Her voice is just gorgeous, the diction is especially wonderful. I have to say, I thought she was better just slightly as Eponine (when she was that age, of course), but maybe thats just cause I will always think of Ruthie Henshall as Fantine. Regardless, fantastic performance.
Ruthie and Lea are both beautiful in their own unique ways. It all comes down to one's own preference. It is fair to say that Lea's diction and traditional techniques may be superior. I marvel at her awesomeness. But Lea has never made me cry, her voice was just too powerful for me to think she is vulnerable as Fantine. On the other hand, I shed so much tears listening to Henshall's Fantine. When I listen to a musical, I don't want to just admire the beauty of a song, I want to be touched by it
this is the best performance I've seen on youtube. Lea's just so impassioned, and she conveys her emotions so well. I was in tears by the end of the song.
aww 3 ppl have shaky hands and now are so ashamed of themselves that they have hidden from this page and vowed never to show their faces on youtube again :(
@tonzzzsaintie "Best" is a tall order - Elaine Paige, Ruthie Henshall. I don't disagree that Lea is awesome, but Elaine and Ruthie were pretty awesome as well. How about one of the best?
Of course, she's no Ruthie Henshall, the singer with the ugly voice who has been described as a domestic starlet has-been. No wonder she has no more career, while Salonga has been around for 30 years and is still going strong!
On one level, this is a unique meeting of Lea's incredible voice with a song that is worthy of it...but what really sets this performance head-and-shoulders above all others is the passion. My God, when Lea sings "And still I dream he'll come to me", I FEEL her hope, and when she sings "But he was gone when autumn came", I feel the venom.
Thank you, Lea, for sharing your amazing talent...and thank you a thousand times over for sharing your lovely and boundless heart!

@Kaiserbecks: Henshall was great. Like ages ago. Until producers experimented with Salonga and discovered she could do better. She, NOT Henshall, has een labeled The Legendary Fantine. Sorry, your WRONG opinion (there's such a thing now: yours) doesn't matter. Ha ha ha!
@janetcalicagan My opinion can't be "wrong", it's based on personal taste. I think Salonga is still better than Boyle (who has been labeled "talent of the year" and whatnot) though.
Ruthie Henshaw was great - this is good too. Why does it have to be one or the other? Whatever happens, both Henshaw and Salonga are streets ahead of Boyle. Fed up with people making comments slagging Henshaw or Salonga off. Why can't they both be appreciated?
One great thing about Salonga's vocals is how rich & full her low tones are and how precise & properly belted (full power but w/o the shriek) her high notes are (observe Henshall's rough belt, or Idina Menzel's screechy belts on Wicked). She read Hugo's book & thoroughly studied the character before taking on the role AND it shows in how different & truer to the book her portrayal is. She's clearly superior to Henshall. And it's no surprise critics have dubbed her as THE legendary Fantine.
@punknnerd2 Well, Fantine is an interesting character to play, and a difficult one at that: Fantine had two stages of her life after she was fired from the factory, one in which she was full of grief - which is the way Henshall portrays her - and one in which she was full of rage - which is how Salonga portrays her. I don't think that either performance is out of tune with the character, it just depends on which stage of Fantine's life you take them to be in.
@ShinobiSasukeUchiha There are a number of videos on Youtube alone containing interviews with Salonga. But there are more (magazine) articles that mentioned it when they came out way back in 2007.
Ruthie would always be my favorite singer of IDAD. With that said, anyone who dislikes this interpretation of Ms Salonga is beyond me. I felt her "pain".
I'm not an expert, but this simply sounds terrible. She ends up doing the same monotone moaning that Susan Boyle "mastered". This is nowhere near Ruthie Henshall's interpretation.
@KaiserBecks I doubt you could moan as beautiful as that! To say you're not an expert is nothing short of redundant as it's pretty obvious in your comment. Please, talk to a music teacher at least, so you'd know what you're talking about.
@noisycanary You're right, I couldn't moan like that. Does that change anything? No, it doesnt. I do not like her pronunciation and I think she's overacting. If I need a music teacher to tell me that she's good: what makes me think that Ruthie's version is better? This is nowhere near the Fantine from the 10th anniversary concert. It's just bad.
@noisycanary Poor taste because I think Ruthie is 10x better? I'll take it as a compliment then. I just watched "Fantine's arrest". God, she's awful. This whole concert is rubbish compared to the 10th anniversary version. I think either you must be deaf or you just prefer Lea Salonga because she's from the Philippines. Or maybe it is you who has poor taste. Either way, I don't give a crap.
@KaiserBecks Haha! This is getting better. Keep blabbering. I'm sure your opinion matters. I think it will keep most people from liking Lea's critically acclaimed portrayal and keep them from buying the already hot-selling blue-ray disc... Read: Eat your heart out!
@noisycanary My opinion matters as much as yours. People also buy Susan Boyle's CDs, there's no hope for them anyway. Funny though, that you speak of critics. Instead of reading out the backside of your "hot-selling Blu Ray", you should look up critics that call Henshall the definitive Fantine. She's part of the "dream cast", just like Philip Quast. If you're able to enjoy this, suit yourself. Just don't think that you have "better taste" because of that.
WOW. She not only can sing this song but really act it out too. I also saw the video where she said she read the book and studied Fantine's character.
Though I agree she was phenomenal, I think that Ruthie Henshall portrayed the character better, Lea should have stayed as Eponine! She was much better at it then the newer one
Though I agree she was phenomenal, I think that Ruthie Henshall portrayed the character better, Lea should have stayed as Eponine! She was much better at it then the newer one
@erikeasy WHAT? SUSAN BOYLE IS NOTHING..SHES AN OLD CRAP,...NOT COMPARABLY TO THIS LEA SALONGA WHO IS MULTI AWARDED AND HAVE SOMETHING TO PROVED.BOYLE ON THE OTHERHAND IS JUST SYMPATHY GENERATED ACT...
many commenting saying this is the ultimate performance, I beg to differ. Compared to many other performers like Patti Lupone, Ruthie Henshall, Debbie Byrne etc. Lea Solanga's performance is definitely commendable, but I wouldn't call it "THE PERFORMANCE", her version has much more anger to other performances, which is very nice to how she could deliver.
@dummygeek because that is how the story really went through... anger of letting things happened and suddenly leaving fantine alone with everything.. i bet you read the book?.. in the book it says that anger linger on her because she trusted a man that at the end left her.... many played the role but they just sing the song, no one could ever done such thing with emotion,, i guess it will be hard for other persons whom played the role to sing and act without affecting the pitch of their voice..
@k2cbp lea said in an interview that she red the book to understand how miserable fantine was. i believe that is why you could see a very emotional performance. for me she touched my heart. brava lea!
whew !!!! this is not a performance ,, this is "THE PERFORMANCE" ... anyone who wants to argue.better have a valid reason, actually , don't attempt it. you'll just lose..
@Allotmenteer2 i wont force u to prefer this but.... how? why? i love Susan Boyle very much but this is beyond excellence her vibrato is perfect, her voice is overwhelming and the clarity of her voice doesn't waver, so i just want to know why or how? XD
@TheHeretor Well, Sue Boyle belts it out, at least she did on her BGT audition. And I think on this Salonga version her high notes at the climax sound a bit nasal and rigid.
Wow! All I can say. We all know Lea has a fantastic voice, and this just further proves my point. Pure gold, this is. Her, Ramin, & Alfie stole the show! So glad I could be a part of the live world broadcast!
I am riveted to my seat... what a great performance! Can you please post Lea Salonga's rendition of "Fantine's Arrest" in this concert? Thank you. I think it's beyond perfection!

KaiserBecks 1 year ago
@KaiserBecks No, it's not bad. It's just that you have poor taste.

@KaiserBecks you need a teacher to tell you that she's good.you got poor taste that's why.=p

WOW. She not only can sing this song but really act it out too. I also saw the video where she said she read the book and studied Fantine's character.

Though I agree she was phenomenal, I think that Ruthie Henshall portrayed the character better, Lea should have stayed as Eponine! She was much better at it then the newer one

many commenting saying this is the ultimate performance, I beg to differ. Compared to many other performers like Patti Lupone, Ruthie Henshall, Debbie Byrne etc. Lea Solanga's performance is definitely commendable, but I wouldn't call it "THE PERFORMANCE", her version has much more anger to other performances, which is very nice to how she could deliver.
dummygeek 1 year ago
@dummygeek because that is how the story really went through... anger of letting things happened and suddenly leaving fantine alone with everything.. i bet you read the book?.. in the book it says that anger linger on her because she trusted a man that at the end left her.... many played the role but they just sing the song, no one could ever done such thing with emotion,, i guess it will be hard for other persons whom played the role to sing and act without affecting the pitch of their voice..
k2cbp 1 year ago 7
