Wait so 8 is two more than 6? Omfg I've been living a lie all my life why why got why. I was to lazy to hit the all caps button yet I have the time to say this explaining it
Who is this crack?! Word of the day must be Meshuggah! Would be nice if they had someone familiar with the metal genre to talk. Maybe he was a stand in for someone else. Not a good front man for such a nice guitar...
@sploogefest14 This guy doesn't now shit period - extended range guitars have been made for the last 350 years for various virtuoso guitarists, but which were obviously acoustic. The extended range is more to do with enhancing the limited range of the guitar - which is about half that of the piano. A 'chuggy low sound' is just one, fringe benefit of an extended range guitar. A string on 'either side' would be far more practical, but this can be achieved with the standard 8 string ibanez.
Well, I've gotta say I haven't been able to get used to using one of these 8-string guitars. Honestly, I think a common seven string one can easily fit my tastes and it's got two more strings in it which make it sound heavier than ever or even than a seven string guitar.
So when you buy strings for this guitar, do they have 8 string sets out there, or do you have to buy a standard 6 string set and two more additional custom gauge strings? Also, is this guitar made only with a fixed bridge and locking nut, or can you get a floating Floyd Rose setup, locking tuners instead of a locking nut, a Wilkinson bridge, etc.?
they make sets of strings for 8 strings but youre pretty much always gonna have to get them online like guitarcenter(dot)com and ibanez only puts fixed bridges on their 8 strings but you can get tremolo's for 8 strings, example: the kahler tremolo's
You can always buy extra loose strings at guitar center or whatever. If you've ever snapped a high E and went and bought an extra this is the exact same thing, just a diffrent thickness. if you like really heavy strings you can make custom sets online with some companies. It's very possible, just not common.
I remember looking on the Ibanez website and the string gauge was a 68. The guitarists in Meshuggah use a 70, but I heard some people even have 80. I think it depends on the scale length.
@dimebagdarrellxx Well is basically just a salesman, he's surely afraid to make it sound like this guitar is just for metal artist. Which is surely true for about 95% of the people who buy this. But some players like Tosin Abasi is playing one, so Alienating this type of player is not a good idea. But imo, this guitar is done for extreme metal.
If you play an 8 string, every bassist you play with will hate you. The low F# is ridiculous on bass, and if you de-tune to it, your strings will flop like a limp dick.
Great idea, but I still only see this as practical if you've got a bat-shit crazy bassist, or you just plain don't have one.
Or what if your bassist just has a multi string bass?
And it's plenty practical in many situations. One of the guys in my band has one of these guitars and he plays clean jazz on it. It's a creative tool you can do more with, and it is not just used by metal bands. Metal bands just happen to be the most common users of a guitar like that. But you can use it for any other style of music you wanted to and still accommodate everyone else with it.
Tune up a bass? I don't think that would be good for the neck... But I mean this guitar would be perfect matched with that Music man 6 string bass, or even a 7 string bass.
Meshuggah tune the 8 string from F# down half a step to F, so they play F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, Gb, Bb, Eb. Their bassist plays a 5 string bass, and tunes to Bb, F, Bb, Eb, Ab. pretty sure anyway. Dont think the bassist has changed tuning since meshuggah played in Bb on their 7 strings.
that kinda sucks because that means the bassist has to play most stuff on the 4th string, which matches the 8th string of the guitars, so its not an octave lower.
Infernal Hail from OBNOUNCE, i just love my Ibanez RG2228 8-string guitar using Bareknuckle Aftermaths...
