Of course, the reason Shinji likes Rei over Asuka is partly because she doesn't treat him like crap. But, more importantly because it repeats Freud's theme again, where guys are supposed to like women similar to their mothers. Gotta love the Freud in the anime.

Rei has been misinterpreted by the fandom. Apparently, Anno meant for her to be unnerving and creepy, with a very solemn personality. For some reason people just think she is cute.

Well, you can compare Rei and Asuka in a different way. Asuka is loud, boastful, and has a lot of pride. This is like the german euro girl image. Rei is quiet, has that innocent but sexy feeling about her. (You know that scene when she just out of shower and she doesn't realize it) So, Rei is more feminine than Asuka in that manner. But after all the rewatching, I find Rei to be boring. I guess once all mystery about her is gone...

You know, I used to love Rei way more than Asuka. However, after watching the series like 100 times I love Asuka more and more. She is much more human. All her reactions are like natural impulses. Much like Shinji. They're opposites, but they're so pure in their humanity.
