  • Nice sound

  • You have the money to have a 917? But you use a board to carry the load of the engine as you hoist it out of the chassis? WHAT THE ****?

  • How much did it cost to rebuild that engine?

  • how much does the engine weigh? a porsche fan told me only the engine weighs about 250 - 300 kgs...is that true? great video!

  • nooooooo noooooooooooo that flat 12 piston symphony makes me cum nooo omfg shit im crazeddd

  • man i could pay any price to have that engine in my house over a table lol, i just gotta find a genuine one(which will be nearly impossible)

  • so that's how porsche raped everything with wheels for nearly a decade

  • To all Corvette, ford, lincoln, and hummer fans out there, suck it.

  • That monster Flat-12 looks like something that would've powered a Panzer tank!!!

  • flat 12 cylinders ?? never seen that before

  • One big Ass go cart!!

  • Did you know that Porsche made 16 cylinder turbo boxer engine? They made it in case this 12 cylinder isnt enough to beat competition... They newer measured how strong that 16 cylinder was, they only know it had more than 1800 HP...

  • @jura1000

They never turbo'd the 7.0 L Flat-16, although it made 750 HP NA (still not enough to leave with the Big Boys at the end of Can-Am). Once the first version of the 5.0L Flat-12 Turbo made 1000 HP, they dropped the Flat-16 idea. Would've been a ton of work and they were already leagues ahead of every else with a well proven engine.

  • Huge go-kart ;D

  • It was quite a sight at Laguna Seca for the Porsche 50th anniversary to see, as I recall, about 5-6 various versions of the 917. When they all went on track - WOW!

  • Nice engine hoist 0:08.Yes those are broken cylinder/ head studs.Look at the valve angle on the DOHC heads,It's huge.At 1:05 look at the con rods on a common journal, like a Harley.Beautifully polished ! ! Gear driven cams.Slots for the cam lobes, some sort of bucket keeper? The car looks unrestored, worth a small fortune ! ! ! Good job guys, need any help at the shop?I'll sweep the floors and clean the bathroom ! ! !

  • There was an old Porsche ad that had the model line circulating around a race track. I can't recall all the models but they started with the 914? and then it would be passed in turn by the next model up the scale. At that time the 911S was top of the range and the camera ended up in one of those and it was going a treat. The announcer then says, "Of course, if this car won't do ....." and a 917 went by trailing smoke and rubber, like the 911 was parked up on blocks. No FX, just goddamned fast.

  • what is that at 1:30 sitting to the right of the 917????

  • @BeephLypz its an old firefighters truck

  • I hate building an engine and having to wait for the residual oil to burn off, all the time praying and tellin myself it's just oil left over. Man that's a fine piece of engineering, it looks like a herd of VW engines in a group grope. I had a pin come loose on my hot rod Karmen Giha come to think of it, Beautiful car and nice to see real craftsmen at work. Damndest cam followers I've ever seen, do the slots keep the cam located or am I seeing things?

  • fantastic car

  • That's a huge engine. Bigger than the Ford MOD V* sitting on my engine stand.

  • This car is fucking aircooled, and still have the glory ...

    0-100 Km/h in 2,1 sec

  • That sounds godly.

  • OMG! It is Air cooled!

  • holy crap that thing is huge! What car is a flat 12 from?

  • @alexthepalix Porsche 917 Spyder.

  • @alexthepalix thats what she said.

  • @alexthepalix ALL 917s had variations of this engine, coupes & Spiders. The K30 was even turbocharged.

  • its aircooled? that engine?

  • @migchelas of course. Its an old Porsche haha

  • Would this chassis pass the 40 mph barrier test today?

  • awsom...

  • I don't know about you, but it was good for me...cigarette?

  • Thank you thank you thank you; one of the greatest racing cars of all time glorified just by the noise it makes. I wish current racing cars sounded anywhere near this good.

  • @harvey2lips I wish current racing cars were anywhere near this good :)

  • Good job and good video, thanks for posting !

  • I'm well versed in 4's and 6's. I'm afraid thought that if I were to get close enough to work on the 12, I'd drool all over it.... I'm confident enough in my skills to say that I could hold my own at their shop.

  • I wish I had their job...

  • could you do the job?

  • @ottocars i would learn whatever i would need, to do this:)

  • @svedr the big problem is WHERE would you learn it?

  • @ottocars yep i know fixing my car is one thing, and relatively cheap to fix if i do something wrong, but i you do something wrong on a 917 its probably not that cheap:) so you have my respect for doing this:)

  • @ottocars how much do the 917 porches go for?

  • @redghost105 minumum a million for a real one

  • I don't see any turbos which means this is not a Can Am 917/30. It's just a regular 917, not the 1500hp version raced in America.

  • @texasjack1978 ...Hey Jack......Good heads up!! BCD956

  • its a normal aspirated 917-10 685 HP so no turbos!

  • extremely efin cool ! ... thanks.... :)

  • what's the big ass fan for again?

  • It's an air cooled engine.

  • i was watching it again a second ago and i just figured it out before i read your message.

  • i love to see a cockpit view on the old nurburgring flat out, just to hear that german flat 12 string instrument playing music

  • I thought those were called studs, not pins, they are threaded into the block, right? Also, I thought thought the can am cars were all turbo charged, this car doesnt appear to be.

  • absolutely spectacular car, it must have been a real pleasure and honor to work on.

  • Geil, nur GEIL!

  • That BRUTE engine looks like something from a main battle tank!! Panzer of course......

  • still the best...

  • I LOVE that motor!!

  • very very beautiful car and engine!

  • das is n motor leute! ich bin gleich feucht geworden, sag ich euch!

  • fucking amazing!!! LOVE THIS CAR!!!

  • Man that sounds great!!!! Congratulations on a great car!

  • toller wagen beneide euch!!!!!!

  • Wo kommt ihr her??

die herren hören sich an wie schwaben!!!

  • aus stuttgart.

  • I liked your video, great to see the bumpy start of the air-cooled boxer 12 after a good restoration!

  • hmm, familiar parts

  • Thank you for documenting so much work for us, what a gorgeous car, thank you!!!

  • one car i'd be very scared to drive

  • when you will ever drive... ;)

  • paintthecopZ Your the one who does not know shit about these engines. This motor was built off the908 platform .The 917/30 was the most powerful Can Am car ever built ,In 1973 Mark Donohue took the car to Talledega and set the worlds closed course record of 235 mph.You need to work on your Porsche history.

  • If you're right about the speed record at Tall-dega, then I find it really funny that the 917 with its flat 12 beat the Americans with their V8s at a very American track in the part of the USA that loves V8s and Nascar prolly more than any other part of America.

  • I think you`ll find it was 223.5 mph. to say the 917 was built off the 908 platform is extremely vague, the were huge developements, the 908 chassis started off handling around 260 hp which clearly wouldn`t handle the 1100 to 1500 hp Donohue was used to. maybe you need to check your history !

  • God i love the sound of Flat engines they got more grunt to them then their V engine counter parts

  • that'd be a bitch to tune

  • you are right but it is not really nessesairy there is enough power.

  • The sweet sound of bad-ass!

  • PERVERS !!!

  • back from the days when car racers had more balls than they had hair dressers.

    That car is immense.

  • The 917's (all of them) will always exemplify a racing car to me--the ultimate vehicles of power and poise with no frills.

  • Need to revive flat 12'S!! Its a shame they are not made anymore

  • Yeah...thats why the 917 still holds the distance record at Le Mans...even after 37 years!!!

  • that and the track changed

  • whilst I love the 917, you must allow for the track being altered, the Peugeot 908 is the fastest ever Le Mans car.

  • in top speed ,but not in lap time and thats whats counts,

the french just could not accept that a german car was faster.

  • sorry, i meant the peugeot 905.

  • Now that is a rare and beautiful work of art.

  • Great to see them being restored! these cars could do 230mph+ in the 70's!

  • In the dark and the rain

  • thats what i call an engine!

  • well...thats what i'm talkin bout.

would love to see that beast race qute little nascars around a circle track hahahh.

  • They raced the 917 at Daytona 24hr

  • nice work! a true classic!

  • Mother of God!

  • thats so crude...

  • Wow I got goosebumps just listening to it!

  • Porsche is the best, F..K the rest!!

  • bis zu 100 liter auf 100km un ca. 400 km/h

  • Makes American racing cars of the early '70's (and even now!) look pretty pathetic doesn't it? (And I'm an American.)

  • Jo!

This engine will twist a knot in you cessna.

  • Is this your car? Congrats on it mate! Nothing like following a classic car rebuild! especially one like this! enjoy it dearly!

  • I would like to put this in my Cessna!

  • it woult take of vertical 685 HP!

  • Is it normal the pins break?

  • no its not but when they get old it can happen

esp at high reves or when not warmed up properly

  • You would probably stress the airframe a bit LOL!! Great comment

  • Air cooled flat 12 cylinder!! That is totally awesome. Porsche owns.

  • Dang it's so small!

  • AWESOME MACHINE!

  • That's porn! heard it at Spa 6 Hrs '06

  • beautiful

  • 12 cyl flat engine, bravo..

  • I love it! thank you for posting this, thanks.

  • porsche there's no substitude

  • Wow...excellent and worthwhile ressurection! What a beautiful, monstrous sound! ....we'll never hear those sounds from a racecar again.

  • Great video, my congratulations!!

  • Listen to that beautiful music!

  • What serial number car is this? So happy to see the rejuvination of this amazing car. How long ago was this film/rebuild taken? Is this car finished yet and do you have other clips or maybe naritives as you proceed through the build. Love to see this car at Montery's Historicss!

  • wonderfull !!! that sound is just unbelievable ! Greetz from belgiumm
