Did you know that Porsche made 16 cylinder turbo boxer engine? They made it in case this 12 cylinder isnt enough to beat competition... They newer measured how strong that 16 cylinder was, they only know it had more than 1800 HP...
They never turbo'd the 7.0 L Flat-16, although it made 750 HP NA (still not enough to leave with the Big Boys at the end of Can-Am). Once the first version of the 5.0L Flat-12 Turbo made 1000 HP, they dropped the Flat-16 idea. Would've been a ton of work and they were already leagues ahead of every else with a well proven engine.
It was quite a sight at Laguna Seca for the Porsche 50th anniversary to see, as I recall, about 5-6 various versions of the 917. When they all went on track - WOW!
Nice engine hoist 0:08.Yes those are broken cylinder/ head studs.Look at the valve angle on the DOHC heads,It's huge.At 1:05 look at the con rods on a common journal, like a Harley.Beautifully polished ! ! Gear driven cams.Slots for the cam lobes, some sort of bucket keeper? The car looks unrestored, worth a small fortune ! ! ! Good job guys, need any help at the shop?I'll sweep the floors and clean the bathroom ! ! !
There was an old Porsche ad that had the model line circulating around a race track. I can't recall all the models but they started with the 914? and then it would be passed in turn by the next model up the scale. At that time the 911S was top of the range and the camera ended up in one of those and it was going a treat. The announcer then says, "Of course, if this car won't do ....." and a 917 went by trailing smoke and rubber, like the 911 was parked up on blocks. No FX, just goddamned fast.
I hate building an engine and having to wait for the residual oil to burn off, all the time praying and tellin myself it's just oil left over. Man that's a fine piece of engineering, it looks like a herd of VW engines in a group grope. I had a pin come loose on my hot rod Karmen Giha come to think of it, Beautiful car and nice to see real craftsmen at work. Damndest cam followers I've ever seen, do the slots keep the cam located or am I seeing things?
Thank you thank you thank you; one of the greatest racing cars of all time glorified just by the noise it makes. I wish current racing cars sounded anywhere near this good.
I'm well versed in 4's and 6's. I'm afraid thought that if I were to get close enough to work on the 12, I'd drool all over it.... I'm confident enough in my skills to say that I could hold my own at their shop.
@ottocars yep i know fixing my car is one thing, and relatively cheap to fix if i do something wrong, but i you do something wrong on a 917 its probably not that cheap:) so you have my respect for doing this:)
I thought those were called studs, not pins, they are threaded into the block, right? Also, I thought thought the can am cars were all turbo charged, this car doesnt appear to be.
paintthecopZ Your the one who does not know shit about these engines. This motor was built off the908 platform .The 917/30 was the most powerful Can Am car ever built ,In 1973 Mark Donohue took the car to Talledega and set the worlds closed course record of 235 mph.You need to work on your Porsche history.
If you're right about the speed record at Tall-dega, then I find it really funny that the 917 with its flat 12 beat the Americans with their V8s at a very American track in the part of the USA that loves V8s and Nascar prolly more than any other part of America.
I think you`ll find it was 223.5 mph. to say the 917 was built off the 908 platform is extremely vague, the were huge developements, the 908 chassis started off handling around 260 hp which clearly wouldn`t handle the 1100 to 1500 hp Donohue was used to. maybe you need to check your history !

I guess u dont know engines so well. the 12 bangers were not effective, fast, heavy, gas guzzler. Turnability is more important then the speed, since the 12 banger cant pin it through turns whats the point. a v8 can be made to be able to make smoke at 150... thats plenty fast.

You have the money to have a 917? But you use a board to carry the load of the engine as you hoist it out of the chassis? WHAT THE ****?
