I would never knock any Supremes' songs. I cannot. The 60's was my era & I grew up listening to & digging all their songs. However, this song(& I must included "Love is here & now you're gone") was always a cut above all the rest. The whole arrangement is like something out of a Broadway show or a movie score in terms of style. And the way Diana pours out of her sweet soul with the groups signature unison & harmony flair is too much. Give it another real good listen especially from 1:459 on.....!
Yes, I like many others have heard Diana Ross say that, many times. She likes to tell people how wonderful she is.Mary Wilson wanted some creative control, something Diana was denying to everyone but herself. She always did and always will think of herself first.
I've always thought it was strange this track only reached number 12 on the charts. It was number 1 in my book. I love the dixie/classical feel of it, with the rich and prominent string arrangement. Quite a unique sound.
The first time I heard this song was when Diana,Mary, and Cindy were on Ed Sullivan.Somebody gets that video and it doesn't stay long.It was the first time I saw them without Flo and It just didn't seem real.It felt so strange. thank you Suede.I wonder where Suede is,she hasn't been on her channel in a long time.I hope nothing has happenned to her.
Basic, simple rhythm with Diana in the middle of it all, 2:06. All so cute, so sweet. In my op, one of the best from HDH. Keep playing, keep remembering, and they shall stay alive forever!
This is a really, *really* great song! Yet I suspect that it wouldn't immediately leap to mind for most people if they were asked to name great Supremes' classics. That's too bad...to my mind, this one ranks right up near the top!
flo is definatly NOT on this. the last supremes single to feature flo was REFLECTIONS. also for the record the andantes were never used on a supremes single while flo was in the group, only in later recordings .
The last really good original "Supremes" song. Were the Andantes on this one? "Someday We'll be Together" was originally slated to be Diana;s first solo single but ended up as the group's farewell release..
Is this according to Cindy herself? Given the Gordy policy of not informing Mary or Cindy about anything I suppose she could have been brought in a few times without Mary, but according to some others, that's Valerie Simpson on "you aint living..."
I'll try to check out the other tracks but I'm mainly a fan of DFM and JMC (I agree Cindy added a lot to the JCM tracks).
I was under the impression that Cindy didn't really make it into the studio until Diana left. That is, she was hired to be the third supreme in public appearances but that the Andantes did all the backing vocals from the time of Flo's departure until Diana's departure.
@mafketays Cindy was on QUITE a number of Supremes' [Well, Diana Ross and the Supremes'] tracks, and on all the singles they released with the temptations. (Check out 'I'll set you Free' and 'Can't Shake It Loose' from the Loce Child album, and yes, she was one of the voices you heard doing "ooo OOH ooo ooo ooo" on 'I'm Gonna Make you Love Me')
@shmuli9 Yeah, I'd forgotten about the Suprmes/Temptations tracks (i knew she and Mary were on those). But what tracks was Cindy on? Album tracks? Singles? She and Mary are definitely not on Love Child or Someday We'll be together. I should check out more of the songs in the DRATS period but I'm just not into them (except I'm living in Shame).
@mafketays According to Mary's first book, "Dreamgirl", after Flo had left the group, the only single releases that she and Cindy were featured on were only those with the Temptations (I'm Gonna Make You Love Me, I'll Try Something New)-
@mafketays She was on a lot of album tracks like "The Beginning of the End", "Can't Shake It Loose", "Sunny Boy", "You Ain't Livin Until You're Lovin", "I'm the Greatest Star". Basically almost ANY song during the 'DRATS' period that has a markedly 'sweet' sound (her last name was really Birdsong, and she has a voice that is also like a bird song) probably had Cindy on it. And no, she wasn't on Love Child or Someday...

This was with Cindy Birdsong - not Florence Ballard. Last song with Flo was The Happening. Then the name chanaged to Diana Ross & The Supremes witt Reflections.
@Intrepid10 Actually, Florence was on this, AND "Reflections", evn though by the time both records were relased she was out of the group and Cindy was in.
I always thought this song had some C&W overtones...
@Intrepid10 This song was recorded in Apr. 20, 1967 before Flo left in which, she is singing on; Before Flo left the group, the name changed in 1966 a whole year before Flo's departure. The Andantes did the overdubbed vocals after Mary and Flo did their recordings. Cindy didn't join the group until July '67 after the recording was completed. The single was released in Oct.25,1967. Cindy didn't debut as a Supremes until Nov. 19,1967. Cindy is definitely NOT on this recording.
I don't now and never did hate Diana Ross, but I certainly do not feel the same about her as I once did. She is not a nice person, I think she is very shallow and self-centered. Mary Wilson was very diplomatic in her book, but no matter how diplomatic you try to be the truth puts Diana Ross in an extremely bad light. Just look at her behavior when they were going to reunite for their Love Tour. I can understand being concerned about your career, but people and their feelings are important too.
@aimperator I don't understand why people like you think Diana deserves the blame for everything. Did you know that Diana offered to double the offer that Mary was going to receive to the tune of $3million OUT OF HER OWN POCKET to do the tour? But no, Mary's high-falutin and delusional self thought that wasn't enough money. What is was about is Mary didn't want to be a back up singer again. Leave it to Mary to always look at things in a negative light.
@SpazChat You should check out the video "Mary Wilson 2000 interview" recently posted. In it she mentions it wasn't so much about the money offered rather than the way she was approached about it by Mrs. Ross. She also wanted more input in the organization of the tour as aimperator mentions above. Mary went through being treated as less than a background singer all those years before and she did not want to be humiliated again. Sometimes not everything is about money..
See i went though a phase of absolute hatred of Diana Ross. But recently i re-evaluate my opinions on her and they have changed. But I'm still stuck singing along to the backing vocals of the songs :L i'll sing along in the car but only when Mary and Flo are singing. I then learnt that i was damaging my voice trying to hit the high notes (which is hard to do when your a 16 year old boy :L) Great song. One of my fav's
Forever Came Today was the first in a series of Supremes recordings where only Diana Ross sings the lead, all the background vocal were done by the Andantes. After that record, the Supremes would only appear on recordings done wiht the Temptations. On Love Child, I'm Livin' In Shame, No Matter What Sign You Are, The Composer and Someday We;ll Be Together the background vocals are done by the Andantes only. Mary wilson and Cindy Birdsong do not appear.
It was the second single issued with the group's new billing of Diana Ross & the Supremes, the penultimate Supremes single written and produced by Motown songwriting/production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, and the last single to feature the vocals of original member Florence Ballard.
@paleyoungman It was the second single issued with the group's new billing of Diana Ross & the Supremes, the penultimate Supremes single written and produced by Motown songwriting/production team Holland–Dozier–Holland, and the last single to feature the vocals of original member Florence Ballard.
@paleyoungman Some songs were recorded with Flo (including Forever Came Today), some with Cindy, and some with the Andantes. On Forever, Cindy's and the Andantes vocals were added. Flo's were deleted.
Great song, but I don't think Florence is on it. The harmonies are great, but Mary is very prominent. The lighter soprano is probably Cindy's. According to Mary's book "Reflections" is the last single to feature Florence on backing vocals.
@suedemiddleton you are so correct! Thank you for bringing this to peoples attention. Gordy did the same on Forever Came Today (yes, Flo sang on the original version. Then Cindy's vocals were added, with overdubbs by the Andantes). Just thought I'd add that for the record.
@suedemiddleton yes, so true. Flo had a wonderful, beautiful voice. Her voice was, (how should I say it) smooth, yet rough. Polished, yet powerful with a lot of soul. Everyone at Motown (at least every book that I have read about Motown and it's artist) said Flo had a great voice, and very strong. Marvin Gaye said "she was a hell of a singer, perhaps the strongest of the three." We are talking about the Prince of Motown saying this about Flo.
@windberjohnstown What? No resonance? Sometimes a great talent can carry the meaning and grace of a song without going over...Florence was singer that could do that.
@paleyoungman On the contrary, Florence is included in the recorded performance of this tune - I think that after the release of "Forever Came Today", Diana began recording with the Andantes in the studio, but sang with Mary and Cindy in concert and stage performances-
Motown grammar is fascinating. For example, "Back in my Arms Again" has the grammatically nice line, ". . . being happy loving whom I please." Yet we hear also, "Flo, she don't know . . . ." In "In and out of Love" there's the line, " . . . to whom I can give my love completely." For the most part, the Motown writers showed excellent knowledge of grammar, which, though, may have been a bit out of character for those portrayed in the songs.
@RUDYNATACHA The original working title of this song was called "Summer Good, Summer Bad" "In and Out Of Love" was released by Motown on October 25, 1967, and it peaked at number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 in December of 1967-
@christheone8773 Really? I think that is a really interesting working title, and would have actually made a lot of since for the lyrics in the song. How did you find out that was the original working titile? And do you know why they chose to not go with that title instead of the one they chose?
@FaReaList Because that information is featured in the DVD, "The Supremes' Reflections" - featuring their televised performances from 1964 to 1969 - it features tidbits of information from each televised performance, and that's where the info comes from - unfortunately, I do not know why they chose the original title as opposed to the working title, that's something that maybe Holland-Dozier-Holland can figure out-
