the perception that people have today about salsa dancing and taking it to a different level depends in how we see it,ilove how these joung people arecontinuening to dance salsa.however you must feel the music and don't see that in alot of these people from were ever you are.all of these dances are from schools and is evident when you see them dancing
love love love this routine!!! and i just gotta give all respect to lori, how she doesn't just hang w/ frankie, she's right up there with him knocking us out! bad ass!!!
Frankie Martinez presents ABAKUA Afro-Latin Dance Company in a FREE one hour show live from Lincoln Center as part of the Lincoln Center Out of Doors Festival. One historic evening Sunday August 9, 2009 7:30 pm. Come witness history!
In a much anticipated return, ABAKUÁ Afro-Latin Dance Company is proud to announce its upcoming performances in New York City. The performances will feature ABAKUÁ's signature style with choreography by Artistic Director, Frankie Martinez. Tribecca Performing Arts Center (June 19th - 21st). Dont miss it!!
I just llloove this clip, it's my favorite.Of course there are choreographies that are far dynamic but this just makes me happy! I can't stop watching her body movements because that's also my style of dancing, smooth with sexy bodyrolls.
gracias pana x poner ese video titulado "babalu" con nada + ni nada - con Richie Ray- Bobby Cruz esta super! Thanks bud 4 posting this great video titled "Babalu" with the greats Richie Ray and Bobby Cruz.ahinama'
Its is clear to see that LA people think that doing stunts and a turn with a pause is dancing....or "FEELING IT"..Doesnt matter what they say....frankie and many others would burn a new one in them any day...NYC is where its at.
I have no doubt that there are good and bad dancers in New York City, just like there are good and bad dancers in Los Angeles. Anyway, it would be nice if more people would simply appreciate this clip for what it is, rather than criticizing each other for what they are not....
there are different styles and people dance at different levels. some interpret music differently. different songs have a different feel. timba, mambo, 70's salsa, columbian based all has different feel. a real seasoned dancer should be able change their body movements and steps accordingly. if someone is beginner that doesnt mean their bad just inexperienced. dancing shouldn't be about competition unless u really care about the recognition of others. whose opinion is really holier than thou?
I agree with Raysalsa1. Anyone who considers themself a dancer should expose themselve to various styles, genres, etc. because that makes one a more complete dancer. If one is just out to have fun, then that is cool too. But judgement and impatience are not needed.
Music and Dance is a "place of refuge" for at least 90% of us. It's a sweet place...and a holy place so can you please KEEP THE CHICANO VS CARIBENO RACIST NONSENSE TO YOURSELF.
How does the saying go? I think it's something like this...
..."better to keep ones mouth shut and be thought of as a fool...than to open it and remove all doubt".
When will people who insist on displaying their music and dance ignorance learn to keep their mouths shut! This is why we are told "if you can't say something nice...don't say anything at all"...right?
This is a brilliant routine. Incredible song. Choreography that highlights everything that you hear! Wonderful. Frankie and Lori...at the very least...deserve "respect" for their efforts. If you're listening to the music or watching the dance and don't get it...then just say so.
Lori Perez is one of the most incredible dancers ever...Women salsa dancers must have CURVES!! Take one of her classes and know the magic of salsa. Love both her and Frankie. A magical trip to Havana.
Jealous of him, I loathe New York style..it's 80% USA 20% latino..=like saying a jew is jealous of Hitler dumbass..seems was opposite 'day' when God was giving out good taste..New York style is largely empty and raping hispanic culture rather than respecting salsa's origins..innovation needs grounding in the roots..so to speak..well said toto, viva el arte!
Most of the best dancers of their time thought outside the box and innovation needs no grounds in roots. New York salsa isnt salsa...its mambo (yes there is a difference)....we follow closely to the clave and on2 or New York style follows more towards our cuban roots...look it up
Vincent - I respect and like LA style or any other style of dance. I truly respected Mambo when it was being danced in the "batey". However, nothing ever stays the same and it is wonderful to see how some of our best dancers have added their unique styles to an already beautiful form of dance.
Vincent, just because you lost your glory and did not keep up with yours, stop trying to rob others of their own artistic dreams as envy and jealousy will get you nowhere but to the toilet where you can cr-p like the resto of us do
Vincent, you and Tota are fighting a war without soldiers. You can both go green in the face bad mouthing NY style and/or Frankie Martinez. It is like fighting the world with a hair pin!
I somewhat agree with 'toto352', ok Frankie moves fluidly and is not 'rigid'but i've seen him many times and he is v.often passionless..his timing is dead on as always. However, passion is at least 50% of what salsa's about! can;t say someone;s the 'best' they consistently lack it..
Frankie's dancing is often rigid and passionless and purely based on technique..what makes a male dancer great is firstly 'fire'!Lori Perez looks far superior to him in this respect, could watch her forever..his arm movements are odd and outside of the 'music'looks like doing some kinda 'gay kung fu' routine at times..
I honestly don't see how anybody could describe Frankie's dancing in this video as "rigid and passionless." Was it Opposite Day when you typed your comment? LOL.
Big10, have you ever? Frankie passionless? It's got to be out of the dance community postings by some very troubled minds. I agree with you - was it Opposite Day when they typed their comments?
toto, you have made a few very inciteful comments about Frankie Martinez. Why are you watching his clips? The man happens to be the best and the "gay" word is something you should not even mention unless you have it in mind all the time. The Master is just that, the best choreographer, dancer and teacher in this new era of Salsa!
I know your only reason for thinking this way is your pure envy for Frankie. Boy yes you need to go a long way if you want to be a quarter of how good he is, but you have to learn to accept the ones above you and try to learn from them and not be hateful! I see you are lacking love in your life!!!
@toto352 .. Its clearly a rift between LA and NY styles that causes people to criticise one or the other.. I have to say that I dance mainly LA, but I recognise the absolute superiority of Frankie Martinez as the greatest male dancer I have ever seen... He can do things most mere mortals cant dream of and his choreography is beautiful to see....
I never get tired of seeing Lori dance. This number is awesome. Watching it in person and listening to the music gives me goosebumps. Two of the best dancers around!!
Ha ha, that was a funny way to end your comment. If Frankie is "odd," then at least it's in a good way! He comes up choreography and movement that most of us "normal" people wouldn't imagine. ;-)
This is an awesome video... its funny how watching an awesome choreo makes you love the music its done to... I combed the net searching for this track after I first watched it.
I agree with your point about choreography, omicron1234. Great dancing is about music interpretation and helping the audience feel the music right along with the dancer -- not just putting dozens of spins in places that have nothing to do with the song....
I saw this routine live in Chicago (congress, 2004) and I never get tired of it, it accents the music perfectly! The song is great too. Richie Ray & Bobby Cruz's "Yo Soy Babalu."
