"Ribbon of Darkness" was written by Gordon Lightfoot. In 1965 it became Marty Robbins' eleventh number one on the U.S. country singles chart. Connie Smith also recorded it and it went to #13 on the country charts. I think Connie sings it as good as anyone. Crystal Gayle performed "Ribbon of Darkness" on her first television appearance. I disagree that Marty had a better voice than Lightfoot. Actually they are somewhat similar.
One of the WORLDS very few who could produce live what he did in a studio only 1 owrd to describe this man...........Exceptional... thanks for posting
I listen to this many times a day it's wonderfull back in the good old days it's make my cry since my mother past away i get tears in my eyes marty robbins was a legend just like elvis, johnny cash, roy orbison voices like angels.
Everytime i hear this song i think of my father.... I used to make him play the tape over and over lol. It was always Ribbon of Darkness and El Paso. Im glad to know others enjoy this as much as i do, no matter what the reason. Marty Robbins' music will always remain close to me as it is entwined with the memory of my father. R.I.P. JPH 58-03
I love Marty and have since I was around 12. He was one of the people who inspired me to become a singer and though my career has been in opera, I always come back to him. That said, check out the live version of Gordon Lightfoot singing this on the old Johnny Cash show. It's the only version I like better than this, though it's close! Marty has a "better" voice than Gordon, but something about Gord's voice fits the plaintive theme of this particular song better.
I agree with you on that. Sometimes Gordon's heart reaches this song. I think if Marty was still alive and Johnny they could have done a great trio with Gordon to this song.
My late father adored marty's voice Ribbon of Darkness was his favourite song...although before my time i think he had a great voice...i love this song too
Marty Robbins had a serious problem with cholesterol. He suffered a serious heart attack in 1969, then underwent one of the first heart bypass operations. He survived another 12 years then suffered two additional heart attacks. He died in December, 1982. It was a sad day...
In the late 50's and early 60's as a poor family in Oklahoma, the Grand Ole Opry on radio was 'the' entertainment. He would race at the N Fairgrounds and show up aroung 11:45 PM.... he always sang into the Ernest Tubbs show until 12:15... the crowd would not let him go................luv ya Marty!!
Marty's enthusiasm was infectious--I want to jump up and dance every time I watch this clip! You can tell that he loved performing for his audience :)
A real lovely funny guy who never took anything too seriously! miss Marty always makes me smile! X

One of my all time favorite Marty Robbins tunes.
He is so missed!

Marty is definitely missed. Actually, this tune is not by him, but by Gordon Lightfoot whom Marty admired a lot. The feeling was definitely mutual.
