When I was in the 5th grade I had a teacher that sang and played guitar and this was one of the songs he had us all sing. His name was Mr Guthrie and his cousin was Arlo Guthrie.

When I was a third grader, in 1962, we had a weekly sing-a-long in the gym, on Friday afternoon. It was conducted by a dear, ancient lady named Mrs. Nohler, who was the local church pianist. This song was a mainstay.

"Froggy went a' courtin, he did right,

Ring-tum-buddy-mitchie-campbel­l!" I remember that each copy of the music books had been hand altered.

"Next come in was a big black bug,

On his back was a whiskey jug."

The word "whiskey" was crossed out and replaced with "cider"

When I was little, my Great Grandma used to sing this song to me all the time. It was my favorite. She sang it to my Mom when she was little and I sang it to my daughter when she was little. Grandma died at 93, 8 years ago. It brings back great memories! Thanks for posting!
