Given a choice, rabbits all selected the larger space of 6x2 feet over a smaller space even when they had to “work” for it by pushing levers. Therefore increased space and locomotion improve rabbit welfare.
Please see the Rabbit Welfare Association and Fund website 'A Hutch is Not Enough' pages. website is rabbitwelfare dot co dot uk
A number of studies have demonstrated that when rabbits are provided with more space they increase the number of behaviour patterns and increase their locomotion. (Mirabito et al 1999, Martrenchar et al 2000, Princz et al 2008). Rabbits kept in small enclosures with limited space available for movement have an increase in osteoporosis and bone abnormalities (Drescher 1990, Drescher and Loeffler 1991)
What are the dimensions? To be honest none of them looks big enough to me but it's hard to tell with some of them without some frame of reference. Rabbits need very much more space than people seem to imagine. Wild rabbits daily cover an area equivalent to 25/30 tennis courts and while we can't provide that, we should do our best to give them enough room to hop three times (absolute minimum) in a straight line. Please see how much that means by watching the video called 'How Many Hops'
Need wire floors to keep rabbits healthy. Plus they can get away from the wire and you wouldn't need foot rests. Now don't come yelling at me saying its cruel. You people really need to get over that crap and start looking your food in the eyes. You need to realize how crappy it would be to live standing on your own crap and urine. I would rather stand on wire.
hey where did you find that hutch at 0:36 because im getting 2 rabbits and that looks like the perfect hutch for 2 or more. where did you find that one? can you please give me a link or somewhere on how to get to that hutch?. thanks

These hutches should be great for overnight accommodation - run of the garden all day every day is the ONLY way to house rabbits appropriately in the 21st century and always kept in male/ female neutered pairs. I hope rabbits start getting a better deal rather than the outdated 50s life of hutches they get still...
The comments about "48 sq ft" of space is CLEARLY made by a wildly radical animal rights activist. Please don't allow this view to skew anyone's desire to share their lives with a rabbit; they are wonderful pets and 30x30 inches is big enough for even the largest rabbit. 24x24 inches min for most smaller pet rabbits...
@miskaffon Once you see how a rabbit behaves in a much larger space you'll understand. Its also important to advocate that rabbits should only ever be kept in pairs. 30" x 30" is terrible - how do they run??! They are the best pets for me personally but they should be seen as equal to cats and dogs.
@d4nr8 - I have no problems with bigger cages than the sizes I mentioned, here the ag requirement is a minimum of 18x18 for a dward breed, 24x24 for a medium, and 30x30 for giants (actually- French Lops are energetic enough to injure themselves in cages over 32x32! They "get going" TOO much), but people who want a pet rabbit should not be crucified for having a normal sized cage as long as they have a safe place for them to run. I ABSOLUTELY support spay/neuter & pairing for pet rabbits! :)
@miskaffon - by 18 x 18 for 'dwarfs' you can't mean inches can you!?? Saying that they require 18 inches square is a joke! The reccomended size for a small to medium rabbit is 6ft x 2ft 6 ins x 2ft, and even then I think the 2ft is a bit small, I prefer something less long and thin as we have a 4ft x 5ft x 4ft high hutch (well, shed) for 2 dwarf lops.
@LulabelleBee : I didn't say I'd PREFER that size, I am saying that's a minimum to meet for the USDA to consider the living quarters "adequate" by cruelty standards. Not my preference, just a rule and standard. See my post below; I agree the bigger the better but trying to limit the craziness here; a 6 ft long run is pretty excessive and really not necessary to keep a small/medium rabbit healthy, but if you have the space, why not?? But if you don't have that much it CAN work with smaller.

Those are the requirements of my local branch of the RSPCA, they will not allow you to adopt a pair of rabbits unless you can provide that amount of space because it is the minimum space that rabbits can express their natural behaviour.
My french lop is longer than 30inches when he lies outstretched and he's not even a giant breed. To put him in something only twice his size would be outright cruelty.
Do you really think a rabbit has the space to run about in a 2sqft area?!
when i buy my rabbit im just guna take out one of the built wire frames and create a fenced yard for it...do i need to dig the chicken wire under the ground or anything?
Those pricy ones are good if you have 1-2 bunnies but if you breed them like me you can't afford to spend 1-2k on big old hutchs. but i still like them!!!!
@Ilovescrubs99 i got my bunny a rabbit exercise pen that fits the rabbit and two kids in there. i got mine from petsmart for $39(: & i actually have 2 and then put them together. they are soooo easy to assemble! there are literally 3 steps to it. place it in a circle, put the rod through the hole to keep it together then close the door haha
These are really nice hutchs', great video. Im trying to persuade my mum into getting me a rabbit, iv already got guinea pigs and a hamster and there so cute :).

Domestic rabbits need to be kept inside.
They should only go out on a leash or in a pen with supervision.

their best home is being outside and digging holes. I put my rabbit freely on my backyard without any hutch.

@Fancytuna1 I used to do that too but always had a hutch for them to reside in if they so choose.

deathdrop666 9 months ago
Sad to say but most of those hutches aren't actually that big, they are very nice looking though
Rabbits need a minimum of 48sq ft with 12ft of that being covered and insulated, whether they are being bred from or not.
A cost effective way of giving them lots of space is to get a shed. Ours have an 8x6 shed with an 8x8 run and it cost us less than some hutches!
@jimmy4738. Yes you do need to put wire or slabs on the ground of a run. It stops the rabbits digging out and predators digging in
