F-4 Phantom was designed to shoot down Russian bombers. F-4 pilots were not prepared to tangle with Mig's. In fact the first kill of the Vietnam War in 1965 was when Mig-17 shot down F-105. There were more NVA aces than American aces. US NAvy had to spend millions to train their pilots in better tactics to prevent getting shot down by the obsolete Migs. All this propaganda is trying to mask the fact that US weapons designers put American pilots in danger

Interesting how from this documentary you'd imagine that no USAF aircraft was ever lost over the skyes of Vietnam. Suffice to say that the F105 had to be withdrawn due to the excessive casualties inflicted by an ageing and way less numerous airforce.

Man that MiG-17 pilot during that turn at 4:40 - 4:43 and 4:50 to 4:51 must have really bent the hell out of his control column (that did happen sometimes -- at least one test pilots evaluating a MiG-17 who's pilot defected had that happen to him) to pull that off!

Don't worry, I went to the Vietnam Air Force Museum in Saigon 1 week ago and it showed the engagements where the Vietnamese pilots came out on top.

It's weird they don't show dogfights that the americans lost. In my opinion, the Vietnam War was the last time the americans saw heavy air-combat. In recent wars, the MiGs are no match for their modern planes. Although, with the MiG-35, and the PAK-FA, the east might be catching up.

Where are they? The FUK-pa is another project to steal the money. Russian "stealth" means to steal "greenbacks"

P.S. The project 1.42/44 was not a demonstrator, it was an absolutely real project started in the USSR in the begining of the 80s. It should be a competitor to YF-22. But as usual the money was stolen and the project was closed in 2000. After that some criminal case were initiated. All that in vain. History makes round..

@LgndryThndr Migs are much more valuable than horizontal flight. Migs are fantastic aircraft. Migs during the Vietnam War destroyed hundreds of phantoms and thundercheifs.

Yet the kill ratio still stagnated for them to a 2 to 1 in favor of the phantom.

Maybe if the Phantoms were allowed to engage beyond Visual ID the Aim7 could have been more viable.
