  • I.....AM THE HONEYMAKER!

  • Amazing, you go along, thinking 'Oh, okay, guess this is a plot twist or whatever? Damn Victoria and Constantine are getting threatening...'

'Victoria, are you prepared to give Mr Garret his.... CAWMPENSASHIEN'

    *jaw drop*

  • @MattB225DISTRACTION Yeah, that's an awesome moment, when his voice becomes demonic. :)

  • "It's a rock...its what you asked for." Love that part.

  • Man, as a kid this scene was hella disturbing. This game had such an excellent story and gameplay.

  • This is the one and only occasion in which Garrett truly feels fear and almost gets destroyed. Such an amazing cutscene... such a magnificent storyline. I'm sure none of us ever expected this would happen.

The Trickster made a mistake, though, in not killing him right there and then. But I guess not even him know much about Garrett and the Keepers. D.R.

  • Intellegent use of sympol effects trumps the best cg in the world

  • You'd think a plucky guy like Garrett would bolt the moment Constantine and Victoria started transforming into demons. Instead he just stands there. Did he think he was still going to get paid?

  • @melosebrainuhoh Ha, maybe the idea is that their transformations are so fast that you have to infer that they transformed so quickly that Garret couldn't react.

  • @melosebrainuhoh he probably got distracted by viktoria getting naked and was stuned lookin O¬O

  • @Shady2viewer Eh, Garrett doesn't strike me as someone who's so desperate that he'd risk his life by standing there just so he could make a quality deposit in the Spank Bank.

  • @melosebrainuhoh pfft he might as well see as much as possible before he loses his eye :P

  • This is such an awesome cut scene. One of my favorites of all time. This was the creepiest thief game. Constantine's mansion, Victoria, everything. They were all just so creepy. The second game had none of that. Karras just sucked as a villain. He sounded like Elmer Fudd.

  • @kazbo1

I don't agree. The Trickster, although quite scary, still feels like your average demon overlord.

Karras, on the other hand, is another matter mainly because he's a normal human with nothing but his skill with machines and his charisma. He seems funny and harmless when we first hear him (thanks to his speech impediment), but once we read his new scriptures and his journal he becomes really terrifying. I'd rather face a thousand zombie than face a guy this insane.

  • I remember the first time i saw this cutscene I freaked out thinking that's it, no more thief but I could not let it go. This game really gets under your skin so much you want to make sure Garrett stays out of harms way. Just an amazing game.

  • I love the weird Pagan dialect. Great cutscene. LOOK AT ME! I am the Woodsie Lord; the Trickster of Legend! Karras couldn't match the Trickster, I thought.

  • one of the best game made ever and yes best cutscene ever!

  • umm...what just happened?

  • Garrett lost his eye.

  • my favorite cutscene...but with the Cradle mission, eidos comes close to it

  • She's so cool. I've never played this game, but damn, I want to, if only to get my ass kicked by her *swoon*.

  • One of the best cutscenes ever in any game. Thief: The Dark Project and Thief: The Metal Age were simply terrific. Sadly, Looking Glass Studios is gone...Thief III just doesn't come close....

  • Best cutscene ever ... :D

  • Eidos got nothing to do with The Dark Project and The Metal Age.

  • It's Looking Glass Studios you should be tipping your hat to (if you had one haha), they were the geniuses behind this awesome games.

  • I've never understood 2 things...

why couldn't the Trickster just go into the cathedral and get The Eye himself? and that leads me to: why did it have to be Garrett the one to go into so much effort just to get his eye ripped off in order to be used in the Eye? I mean the Trickster could've just used any other guy's eye...(?)

  • I think it's because the Eye was in a Hammerite Cathedral, holy ground. The Trickster is the Pagan god, the enemy of the Hammerites and their god. So he couldn't go in the Cathedral.

He got Garrett to do it because he's the best thief around, Constantine himself calls Garrett an artist.

  • But the Trickster himself (or just his creatures? don't remember) invaded the Hammer Temple in "Strange Bedfellows" that's why I never thought about that kind of holy repellent effect to answer my doubt =P

And yeah...now I realize the complete betrayal Garrett was through...after almost 10 years xD thanks for your reply!

  • Hm, there's also another theory circulating which I think fits perfectly with why constantine didn't get the Eye himself.

Constantine was a noble class man, with a mansion, and he was posessed by the Trickster. Not fully though, because he's still in Constantine old man form.

The Trickster, to be his full self, needs to be reunited with the Eye. He couldn't get it himself because, being in old man form, he would have been mauled to death by zombie and battered by haunts :P

  • =O..so The Eye is a part of The Trickster himself? if so...now it all makes sense O.O damn...lol

Thanks again for your reply! :D

  • Remind me who is the Trickster?

In Thief 2 the metal age, Garret and Victoria join forces in order to fight the Mechanists :D

I am a great fan of this Trilogy, but maybe there will a fourth game, because in the end of the third game Garret captures a little female child trying to pickpocketing him, just like Garret has been captured by a Keeper in first Cutscene in this game :)

they use the same words "That is not for you" :D

  • They've announced a Thief 4 game for sometime next year :)

  • Apparently, a Thief 4 is in the works. The developers claim they plan to be "true to the originals". We can only hope.

  • @jillym1231211 Wuh? He seems quite capable of pwning Garrett in this vid. I always wondered why he didn't rampage through the Old Quarter and smash up the cathedral like he did the Hammerite temple.

  • @LordBifford The Trickster possessed the body of a City nobleman, Constantine. Therefore he couldn't risk the Old Quarter as mere human.

He needed to Eye to transform into his real Trickster self, and a further human eye in the Eye to cause the Dark Project.

He rampaged the Hammerite Temple AFTER he got the Eye, he was in proper Woodsie form.

  • @jillym1231211 Constantine was a "new face" in the City. He's a natural shapeshifter. Where did this possession theory come from?

  • @LordBifford One of the many theories discussed at The Circle.

OH YES, he was of course 'a new face', totally forgot XD

Well, then that makes out that he obtained a random body to turn into/possess, in order to come from the Maw into the City.

I still believe he couldn't turn into his real Trickster self until he held the Eye.

However, there's still other theories. That's the great thing about the Thief series, they explain so little, leave a few clues, and we all start discussing :D

  • @jillym1231211 So it's just speculation discussed on a message board. Unless you can say otherwise, I say the Trickster is a shapeshifter, just like Viktoria.

Perhaps in the Thief universe the "gods" aren't all that powerful (when compared to, say, the Greek gods).

  • @LordBifford Alright. Sorry to cause any offense. Thief leaves many things open to our imagination, a main thing I love about it.

  • @jillym1231211 I don't think the Trickster needed the eye to transform into his true form. He just wasn't an artistic sneak and he probably wasn't clever enough to figure out how to open the sealed cathedral. An he couldn't have just rampaged the cathedral to get the eye as it was sealed by Keeper wards. That's why he needed Garrett.

  • @Ryker556 hmm. I don't believe that the Trickster needed Garrett to retrieve the eye. Rather than taking it by brute force and by that risking to revealing his intentions to the Keepers and Hammerites he let a master thief and ex-Keeper do the dirty work. Very elegant - Trickster style

  • @actionfraction There's no evidence for that from what I can gather. On the hand, there are things that point to the Trickster not being capable of retrieving the eye. Firstly, when Garrett and Constantine first meet he tells Victoria to fill Garrett in on the details. There's no mention of Talismans, and Garrett has no idea of their existence until he investigates. Constantine would have told him this if he knew how to get into the Cathedral.

  • @actionfraction Second, when Garrett is left for dead and Keeper Artemus approaches him to for rescue Artemus says, "the Trickster will not forgive you for doing what he could not." This mean that the Trickster NEEDED Garrett to retrieve the eye.

  • @Ryker556 Yup. True. Many indications point to your conclusion. Facts or clues aside it is still its hard for me to believe, that the Keepers had that much insight into what the Trickster was able to do and what not. Guess we will only find out if someone stumbles over the Trickster's journal :)

    cheers and happy holidays

  • The Eye had created Hammer Haunts to protect itself. A direct assault would have been foolish - there are only two things in Thief more dangerous than Hammer Haunts - The Puppets, and the Builder's Children Combat Bots.

A thief, however, could get the Eye much more easily through means of stealth.

  • Thief 4 may be announced soon - check GameStooge and GameSpot.

  • Even if you have watched this cutscene a hundred times (like me) it just stays...amazing.

  • This was some scary shit. Great but very underrated game.

  • oh:(

  • ooh thanks for uploading this

  • They need to get off their lazy liquidated asses and somehow find a way to make Thief 4. Same steampunk universe. No modern crap.

  • They hinted that they are. They said they started making a game with the title starting with the letter T. Plus some lady connected to the same company has the letter T styled in the thief logo as her face book picture.

    Now we wait.

  • I actually think this level was as good as ret to cathedral. lots of good fighting.

  • 1:04 wohooo,Victoria's ass!!! hehe.... :P

  • You know, she'd probably kill you said that to her xD

  • I'd be like: "urgh,it was worth it-*death sigh*" hehehe

  • 1:04-1:24 Really cool animation and script. Whoever devised the Trickster phrasing is a genius. "Manfool"...gotta love it.

  • Manfool is an actual term used by pagans and nature-based religions/cults.

  • Best game ever

  • So when does he get his mechanical eye? (Sorry, i only have Thief 3)

  • The hammerites give it to him at the end of the first thief.

  • There's a cutscene of him making his mechanical eye not too far into MA.

  • Yes, but in the Thief: DP ending cutscene you see the Hammers make the eye for him. However, if you mean 'making' in the sense of 'repairing' than you are right.

  • omg the best cutscene ever!!!

  • Yep, it took everyone by suprise when they first played this game.

  • I was about 19 when I first played this game (1998 I think) and this cutscene really made my blood freeze..10 years later and it still gives me the willies!

  • time will tell

  • rofl! garrett looks like a statue when hes staring at viktoria when her clothes are gone.

"WHOA!" "YOUR HOT!.... wanna go out someti.. OW!! MY EYE!

  • Hahaha! XD!

  • lol thanks good to see my joke wasnt wasted =).

  • instead of running, all he did was stand still and his eyes grew wider as he stared at her lol.

  • I hates the Trickster Woodsie lord. And this cutscene is awesome. I knew something was off about Constantine and Victoria, but this caught me totally off guard.

  • is garret bald?

  • Lol, I thought so too xD!

Nahh, he does have hair, you can see it in many cutscenes.

  • hey jilly what was your favorite bad guy the trickster, karras, or the old woman on 3

  • Probably the Old Woman, she killed a poor little girl and many keepers, and Orland and Artemus!

    Grrrr!

  • Seems like the Old Woman was the most heartless, Karras was the most insane and the Trickster was the most evil.

The Thief series are REALLY interesting. I only played the demo (and I'm not that good. Must practise). I really want to buy a copy of this series (along with System Shock 2).

  • Good luck on that. Maybe there is an anthology of all three Thief games. Not sure though...

  • hmm perhaps, but at least there will most likly be a thief 4.

  • Where did you hear that?

  • you can get all 3 for $50 off ebay. says they're xp/vista compliant but I've had trouble with a previous "XP Compliant" version of thief

  • Try the technical forums on ttlg (d ot c om).

    :)

  • Eidos is talking about it

  • Nice! I wouldn't complain if they made Thief 4 :). You got any online source?

  • I read about it in a Game Informer

  • well you have to admit its a good thing orland died... he was a dick to garrett lol.

  • This scene and the Cradle in T3 are'nt the only time Garrett gets scared. At the end of T2 he really seems to be concerned for Victoria just at the part were she sacrifices herself. Yet, I think we can all agree that it takes a lot to scare Garrett. I could never do half the shit he's done.

  • Karras was much more homelike than Constantine...

  • I never saw this twist coming when I played this through the first time. I remember being so shocked and frightened, but completely transfixed by what was happening. Ditto for Garretts voice acting. Never heard a better job done in any game ever! If they hadn't stuck with Russell for T3 I might not have bought it.

  • Holy freaking crap! so that's what happened to his eye, only played 2 and 3, thanks for the uploads.

  • man, I don't know how it happened, but when i got to this scene I remember being genuinely surprised and even a bit frightened...truly one of the best moments in game storytelling.

  • I love this cutscene from one of my favourite games of all time. The Trickster is so mad, and of course you feel weak against him, not being the usual "steam roll tank" of first person shooters. Stephen Russell gives Garrett the coolest voice of any character I've played.

I agree with "The Shalebridge Cradle" being scary as hell. Mostly on the first visit of course, but it's not too cozy on the following visits either!

  • Stephen Russell is a DJ in California. :p

  • Yeh, the only time we SEE him scared.

But in Deadly Shadows at the intro to the Shalebridge Cradle, you can tell Garrett is scared, even though its his voice.

  • Yea, I rember when you pikced up the blood of that girl in Cradle, Garrett just said "it must be her. It s still warm...great..." he sounded rather...uneasy :)

  • MAN Garrett looks like a fat old bugger there XD

  • Hahahahaha. XD yeah, agree, there IS times when he accualt DOES look allot better. :P

  • LOL! XD!

  • Oh that was a great game. I didnt see that coming when I saw it :)

  • holy shit, I would have fainted to...

  • poor Darret .__. must REALLY HURT! ouch...

  • Darrett xD!

Its Garrett, but yeh, that must have really hurt O_O

  • it's not the first time I've spelled it wrong XD hah.

  • Heehee ^_^

  • "Stands He then in the greens and festered Maw and speeds He out his judgements upon the weeps and writhing manfools!"

  • Cool! ^_^

  • Whats sad is that I typed that from memory.. :(

  • Lol! xD

  • haha i know thief 3 in and out too :P

  • Yeh, I know a few of the Hags speeches ;-D

  • "Did you think those ancient phrases were mere words, Manfool? Look

at me! *I* am The Woodsie Lord, The Trickster of legend! If you be thirsty, fleshthing, drink of me. If you be hungry, then feed for I am the honeymaker, and the

jacksberry!....My poor Mister Garrett, you will not live to SEE the sprawling glory

of it! Your sacrifice is not yet complete! Mine lilacs and mine thistleaids must feeds, and I?"

  • Garrett got his eye ripped out! And he seemed pretty fine. I would like die!

  • I know! I would have fainted and puked, and Garrett didn't even make a noise!?

Anyway wouldn't he have bled to death or died intantly? Becuase the veins attached to the eye are attached to brain too.

  • i think you should be able to survive it... but it sure would hurt as hell

  • ouch, that looked kind of painfull...

  • Yep O_O

  • Anyone ever thought that Constantine is kinda like... Satan?

  • Actually, he's the pagan god, the Trickster, which is a real deity of the pagan religion.

  • THIS IS THE CLIP THANK YOU SO MUCH
