These towns used to look full of life, colourful and with so many children playing in the streets, not as shabby as they do now. In my hometown they are bulldozing whole districts now because the population declined from 60,000 to 26,000; and young males are pretty lonesome as mostly the women are gone.
I, too, found work 600 km away in the West, constantly meeting East Germans here in all kinds of fields of work.
It's clear that Hoyerswerda is not on the verge of becoming an economic engine.
But it's a shame Germany can't take what's there and make use of it. If everyone's moving out, that could mean larger homes at lower prices. If everyone's elderly and there are no jobs, the elderly need to be taken care of.
Maybe the government could turn the whole town into a retirement community and move in young people who are eager to work as visiting nurses and move out the young people who want more.
The concluding statement at the end was needlessly pessimistic. The whole piece seemed to suspiciously serve little purpose..."Poor poor East Germany"? Times are hard all over; is that news? Was this a training piece for a new producer? Did somebody need to go to Germany and got the company to pay for it if they did this report to justify the expense?
To talk of "nomads" and "families torn apart" because grown children (have to) move some few 100 kilometers away seems overdramatic. And nostalgia for the ugliest slum architecture on earth and the dirtiest industry? I feel relieved that things finally have to change! Lets not forget what Hoyerswerda became a symbol for: close minded Bürger, born and raised in these close minded stifling "communities" attacking foreigners who suddenly appeared in their midst...
It's sad that some foreigners were attacked, there's no excuse for that. Please remember that foreigners attack Germans all over Germany every day. (rape, murder, assault). Some are Turks who have been there for generations, some are newcomers. (I've seen this myself) I'm sure you recall the innocent elderly German man who was brutally murdered by foreign teenagers on a Munich subway. This problem is rampant throughout the western world...racially motivated brutality against whites/Europeans
This reminds me of the so called "dying states" in the northern U.S. like Michigan and Indiana, all the jobs are moving down south to states like North Carolina and Georgia.
Germans need to seriously think about slipping off those condoms, and get down to having more children, or that country will not have a bright future.

The wind picked up by the microphone in some of the shots is very annoying, noisy clips need to be muted.
