The reason this was done was because the generals said that it was a soldier's duty to fight and do the best he can everyday(a samurai's way is found in death:The Hagakure). No awards for action were given. There is something to be said for doing one's duty even above & beyond without expectation of an award. Maybe saving a comrade's life?

NO PROBLEM WITH THE IRON CROSS for those who really know a bit of its history, but some still see it just on Hitler's chest. We have to teach that people, and that is what I do when I can (found the chance). The pate black cross belongs to the German Monks Knigts more that 800 years ago. And to the German soldiers as a medal since 1813. IT is not a Hitler's invention. And think that even the Navy should use it on its ensing. But the Germans thenselves have a bit of fear about it.
The Iron cross was created during the Napoleonic wars, In the so called "Freikorps" normal German citizens fought on the side of their army. And because gold and silver medals are very expensive they created a medal with the form of a prussian cross made of iron. The only thing Hitler had to do was that he was awarded with the Iron Cross 1st class during WW1
German soldiers who won the Iron Cross in WWII were able to have them replaced in 1957 by a denazified version so they could wear them at ceremonys. (I think both classes). That is why so many swastika ones are available to collectors now. I thought the medal was still awarded as it should be.

WW1 was a total different situation because of the discontent with the treaty of Versailles. Every nation new at that point that this treaty was to hard, actually unfair. As some guys have already written, we have to look forward. Our history is one of the darkest in world history, but we are not still the same. We changed, we are young. And giving a medal to award bravery has nothing to do with WW2, or what else. What we need in Germany is getting more self-confident again. We are accepted as democrated, modern society and that is how we should present ourselve to the world.
i cant see the problem with the iron cross, first of all, its over 200 years old, its used on our tanks and planes, its on some official german flags.
This is the 21st Century; reparations have been paid and we now have NATO, UN and EU amongst loads more treaties to prevent war.
Germany should be put into the same positions as the British armed forces, USA armed forces and other areas where there are hostilities where coalitions are fighting.

Disappointed that they chose a Golden Cross over the traditional Iron Cross. The new medal looks too British.
Also, the old system of Iron Cross, which were awarded in classes, was a superior means of distribution. It minimized any arbitrariness or politics found in some of the awarding of the American Medal of Honor.
The new German award looks better as a ribbon, than it does a medal. That's unfortunate.

Well...have a different opinion. What was wrong with the medals handed out during WWII. Still have my grandpa´s iron cross and will keep it in honour. The cause of the war might have been wrong also maybe the intention of the young man joining but not the effort and bravery of each individual....
Medals depend on branch of service, I'm a U.S.M.C. vet. I was floored when my stepson in the army showed me his ribbons, and medals, for things like hitting a target with a grenade, Able to fire a rifle, able to run 1.5 miles in a short time. and keeping his gear clean. Granted I'm very proud of him, but I think the U.S. Army gives you a medal if you know how to lace your boots. It's a reflection of our culture. "Everyone gets an award, so nobody gets there feelings hurt." Wussys.

NO PROBLEM WITH THE IRON CROSS for those who really know a bit of its history, but some still see it just on Hitler's chest. We have to teach that people, and that is what I do when I can (found the chance). The pate black cross belongs to the German Monks Knigts more that 800 years ago. And to the German soldiers as a medal since 1813. IT is not a Hitler's invention. And think that even the Navy should use it on its ensing. But the Germans thenselves have a bit of fear about it.

The Iron cross was created during the Napoleonic wars, In the so called "Freikorps" normal German citizens fought on the side of their army. And because gold and silver medals are very expensive they created a medal with the form of a prussian cross made of iron. The only thing Hitler had to do was that he was awarded with the Iron Cross 1st class during WW1

German soldiers who won the Iron Cross in WWII were able to have them replaced in 1957 by a denazified version so they could wear them at ceremonys. (I think both classes). That is why so many swastika ones are available to collectors now. I thought the medal was still awarded as it should be.

WW1 was a total different situation because of the discontent with the treaty of Versailles. Every nation new at that point that this treaty was to hard, actually unfair. Success of facism was half-builded up on this treaty created by France, UK and USA.

Powell spent several days lying to them. The war is totally illegal. US troops just shot up a passenger bus the other day and a new 'secret prison' has just been located at Bagram Air Base. France is just as stupid as UK and Germany..

They are not fighting Israel's enemies. They not fighting against anything! They fight for something. For freedom and democrazy, basic rights and to save the terrorised human beings living in Afghanistan. These are honourable issues that have to be honoured and accredited.

Muslims in Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iraq are in fact Israel's enemies and enemies of the US because we pay Israel's way. Installing a puppet dictator who is a CIA agent, propping him up with foreign military might, then rigging a phoney 'election' to keep him in office is not democracy, it is fascism. Civilians are terrorized by foreign war-makers who use Depleted Uranium, Cluster Bombs, napalm and DIME weapons on t them. There is nothing honorable about illegally invading a foreign country.

Some peple here forget to switch on there brains before writing a comment, I think.
As some guys have already written, we have to look forward. Our history is one of the darkest in world history, but we are not still the same. We changed, we are young. And giving a medal to award bravery has nothing to do with WW2, or what else. What we need in Germany is getting more self-confident again. We are accepted as democrated, modern society and that is how we should present ourselve to the world.

This is the 21st Century; reparations have been paid and we now have NATO, UN and EU amongst loads more treaties to prevent war.
Germany should be put into the same positions as the British armed forces, USA armed forces and other areas where there are hostilities where coalitions are fighting.

Good to see Germany again bestowing medals for bravery.
Disappointed that they chose a Golden Cross over the traditional Iron Cross. The new medal looks too British.
Also, the old system of Iron Cross, which were awarded in classes, was a superior means of distribution. It minimized any arbitrariness or politics found in some of the awarding of the American Medal of Honor.
The new German award looks better as a ribbon, than it does a medal. That's unfortunate.

I see that now the Germans are having the Golden Cross instead of their tranditional Iron Cross as the medal for bravery.
Personally, I think the Iron Cross has a much cooler color scheme than its Golden counterpart.

Well...have a different opinion. What was wrong with the medals handed out during WWII. Still have my grandpa´s iron cross and will keep it in honour. The cause of the war might have been wrong also maybe the intention of the young man joining but not the effort and bravery of each individual....

Medals depend on branch of service, I'm a U.S.M.C. vet. I was floored when my stepson in the army showed me his ribbons, and medals, for things like hitting a target with a grenade, Able to fire a rifle, able to run 1.5 miles in a short time. and keeping his gear clean. Granted I'm very proud of him, but I think the U.S. Army gives you a medal if you know how to lace your boots. It's a reflection of our culture. "Everyone gets an award, so nobody gets there feelings hurt." Wussys.

Exactly. A friend of mine was talking about his son's experience in boot camp and there were two women there who could not throw a grenade far enough to avoid blowing themselves to bits. Sad. P.S. Thanks for your service in the best branch of the best military on earth.
