@modjsful You really don't (although it's ideal to have both!) However, I usually just have the gas motor out there and use an anchor when I get to my fishing spot. A paddle will provide slow, quiet maneuvering if you need that as well.
Whats the difference between a short shaft and long shaft motor? Does the short shaft have the handle throttle only? And does the short shaft get put on 10-12 foot vhull aluminum boats? I'm looking into buying one and thought getting used ones peice by peice would be cheaper.
@yakinbama if you want to go quicker, climb up into the front of the boat and use a kayak paddle or just shift your weight to steer, its kind of dangerous but it gets you on plane and you go about twice as fast
Very nice motor. the four stroke are awsome. I own a 6hp evinrude 2 strroke and want one of the mercury 4stroke 9.9s. does your boat plane with that 3.5
so with this mototr u rely dont need a trolling

These motors are awesome! They are actually made by Tohatsu which also makes Nissan. Tohatsu is number one Outboard motor company in Asia.

how fast will it go at full speed

not really that fast at all. I don't have a way to clock it but it's basically a glorified trolling motor.
And I was happy with the #55 thrust TM I had... but wanted a little more range.
