on my 4th yr paddling and have been very successful with all types of rolling. My first year i watched these videos thousands of times and i would lkike to thankyou for them. lately for me a modified back deck roll works best since my falling in motion leavfes in a perfect position, almost looks like a backwards c to c. Other times in better big water conditions i use a sweep. can roll in class 4 now and love the sport more now then ever
This roll is usually just called the sweep roll now I think, but would it be worth trying to finish more upright than on the back deck, especially in a playboat? In my Project 52 with the seat about 1/2" back, if I lean back to finish, the stern dives and I go over the other side on a powerful roll. Plus, finishing on the back deck is risky if you miss the roll, since you're on your back deck (which is really bad when it's shallow or really powerful current where it's hard to get to the bow).
Thanks! This is the roll I have been doing!! I thought a back deck roll was when you go over thrusting your paddle forwards leaning back over the deck then hip flick and sweep all laying on the back deck!! It is possible to do this roll without getting your head wet!! I have been told! Do you have any idea what this roll is called? Anyone!
I'm so thankful for this video. I haven't gotten my roll yet. I have tried the C to C, and the Sweep. Finally someone started me with this roll. I was very inconsistant with it BUT i got it 6 out of about 20! After this video, I'm hoping to be consistant. I'll find out today! Thank you sooo much
oldschool roll teaching. I swear no'one teaching the roll that ends on the backdeck anymore because it is totally impractical on whitewater. If you end on your back you may not have time to go forward specially in a hole. just come up forward man its better
THANK YOU Speusa! this is the roll I've been looking for. I assume that it also works - say if you capsize, to flip youself back up. brilliant at explaining it too. 5*
These names are attempting to differentiate on different variations of the roll. Since the screw roll was first named years ago, it has been more exactly described. However the twist and slice roll is more like what the screw roll has been described.
@kyaker123... as your technique improves you will likely find that your momentum is starting to carry you over the other side; the final stroke will prevent that.
No matter what roll you use it's a good idea to practice the transition from roll to aggressive paddling, and the final stroke is a good move toward that. When you roll up in a rapid you'll need to get back in control of your boat and re-oriented immediately, and that means moving into a paddling position as soon as you come up!
BTW, your videos are really usefull as i currently only know the eskimo roll but im going to try the c to c once i get back in the water on wed the 22. lol ive watched yuour videos about 20 times each now and there good, but why does the instructor lift his 4 left fingers from the baddle when he comes up from his twist and slice (eskimo) roll. Again ty
Just my personal test to hold a really light paddle and make the technique work not forcing the paddle down. No super hard grip.....not part of the technique not necessary.
This is very similar to what i call the eskimo roll, however the sitting and leaning back helps get the kayak up quicker. It also makes it alot safer to do in fairly shallow water, because as you lie back you make the intial space between you and the river bed bigger. It's really usefull, but personally i prefer to stay sitting up as im more ready to paddle and dont need to put in the two strokes. I do find however, that the stroke can get more power as you turn your hips further.
Not for the eskimo roll (Twist and slice roll) twist your bnody properly not your arms and make sure your head comes out of the water last but stay sitting upwards, and sit back in the seat of your kayak.
This is a variation on the sweep roll. It emphasizes laying back. Do not confuse this with the back deck rodeo roll. Many people just call this a sweep roll but when you have traveled lots you will realize that there a many unique rolls that are all called sweeps. This is my attempt to differentiate them so there is not so much confusion when people are discussing the roll. Remember the eskimos have many many names for the different types of snows. We just call it snow.
First off Chris is a proven paddler. Do your own research. Who cares about speedos? If he wants to take time out to offer his help for free. He's been doing this longer then EJ (who is also awesome) and if these men are offering something that may help me avoid a swim; THANK YOU. For those of you who feel so compelled to slam these guys, especially for dumb ass reasons, I ask, WHAT have you offered to the sport other then the entertainment value of proving your a..holeish stupidity??
having taken rolling courses and been very hit and miss with my sweep roll this sweep to back deck roll has come to me naturally and is now very consistent for me in the pool and in combat situations. Other paddlers have warned me that it's not such a safe roll due to being open and exposed in the face and the higher chances of continueing to roll over in unsettled water because of the instability of finishing on the back deck. I'd like to here your thoughts on these concerns...
Human nature, people criticizing rolls they do not do, looking for a reason that theirs is the right way. There is nothing wrong with the back deck roll. You should not finish on the back deck, that is only a transition. As soon you get up on the back deck, sit up forward and take a strong stroke. STABLE. If anyone give you grief tell them if the C to C finished on the second C it too would be unstable, but it requires you to sit up with the head down. Back deck is an easier sit up.
at the stage you're in that face up position you're actually facing up, downwards, so your face is facing the sky. I bought Eric Jackson's rolling and bracing video, which is great. He uses this roll. The C to C roll didn't work for me. This does.
I was able to perform this roll the first day I tried with about 50% success rate. I went out for the second time yesterday and did about 12 rolls with 100%. Wish I had a pool but the Puget Sound is pretty warm at about 50-55 deg. F Thanks for the vids, I'll try the C to C next.
The rodeo back deck roll you seek is in another video on Chris' page. The man can speak for himself, but you might want to check out his cred's before you call him an idiot.
I like to respond to all the comments but yours looks like you were a little quick to judge before you have looked at all the videos. But I will take it you are familiar with all . the commonly used rolls in different regions of the World. I will give you the benefit of the the doubt and assume you really do know what you are talking about. What is a roll there are many types of rolls? I am surprised you are Canadian. Usually Canadians are very analytical before they judge something.
to me (novice kayaker) this seems very very similar to the twist and slice roll??? infact i cant really see the difference between the two. anyone know what the difference is?
Chris talks about the body motion differences in an earlier comment. Also, body postion when you finish the roll is different - here you are fully on the back deck while a normal sweep finishes more to the side. Plus - less likely you will blow your roll by lifting your head or body before the boat is righted. Minus - you finish in a less stable position. This is the first roll I learned (from EJ's video) and IMHO is the easiest to learn.
excellent instruction.I am new to the sport and have been having a tough time grasping the on the water instructions. i think i have been trying to do too much and with these vids i am ready to go back out on the water.
Thanks....Look very carefully, there is no rotation in this roll, just a diagonal crossing. The paddle again moves because the torso moves BUT IT IS because the Torso moves by leaning backward in its diagonal path. Different body mechanics right the kayak. The rotation in the twist and slice is a different effect. Try it both ways the feel is different and very intersting......chris
indeed this is excellent and the bloke is very pragmatic about explaining the rolling ,,well done that man as they say! bloody marvelous vids all o them
True, if youre in shallow water, you should prob brace off the bottom of the river. But its actually just as protective as the c to c and faster. Your face isnt exposed at all since the only time youre actually looking down is once youre already rolled over.

Great video. Using it to help some of my group learn to roll at the moment.
You can improve on this though.
Instead of going the whole way back, just go from the forward postion to sitting up straight. DO NOT GO ALL THE WAY BACK.
It means you got to have a spot on hip flick but it is definitely worth the effort.
You will come up even quicker and be more stable.
This is a great roll in moving water because you come up ready to take a forward stroke instantly.
