There was a great rivalry between Slew and Bates. If you ever get a chance to see the 1983 Woodward, you will hear one of the greatest race calls of all time.
There was a great rivalry between Slew and Bates. Terry Lipham was replaced by McCarron for the Marlboro. Cordero said it wouldn't make a difference.
"The first race in this series was the Woodward Stakes, where he met Bates Motel, who had been easily the most impressive horse so far in 1983, and Island Whirl, who had won the Woodward Stakes a year earlier and recently won the Whitney Handicap at Saratoga....... "
The Woodward was one of Marshall's best calls ever. I was there. please post
That was 1 of the worst race calls I have ever heard. I was never a big fan of Marshall Cassidy but he blew the stretch call as Highland Blade was clearly closing on the inside and had the lead. His robotic style was terrible especially following in the footsteps of Dave Johnson and Chic Anderson, 2 of the best ever.
I think you're being hypercritical here. Marshall clearly identified after the 1/4 pole that Highland Blade was "right there", "on the inside here comes Highland Blade", "Highland Blade is challenging Slew O' Gold and Bates Motel", "Highland Blade on the inside, Highland Blade HAS the lead!", when he got the lead in the last fifty yards or so. Yes, he was a little off at the end, but no one's perfect. He may not have been an Anderson or Johnson, but I've always liked his clear, concise style.
Yes, some of the Fall Champ races were very good. However, for championship/Eclipse determining racing,it obviously favored horses based in New York. The Breeders Cup, by switching venues, forces horses that prefer certain courses to bring their game on the road. This is exactly what happened in 84' when SlewO'Gold had to take his brittle feet to California.Running 2nd in the Classic, SlewoGold lost the Horse Of Year. The Beyer figure for that race was very low, showing Slew wasn as good away from NY
Fascinating stuff as always from you...I would like to know how many more Marlboro Cups you might have, also any JCGC from that era from the late '70s through to, say, 1990. Just wondering, you always seem to post quality races from the past, and thanks for doing so.
Cordero preferred center of the track in the Marlboro, didn't he? He took Slew O'Gold even wider here than Seattle Slew in '78.
I think this was Bates Motel's final race. He's mostly forgotten but in '83 he was the favorite for HOY heading into this race. Bates Motel was massive, about 20 hands and very heavy. He took time to get rolling. I don't think he ever ran a sprint.
The Fall Championship Series was the best. It was like 3 Breeder's Cup Classics, a few weeks apart. I really miss it.
Actually, I hadn't even thought of that. I posted this because of it's fine racing and the fact that Slew O' Gold was in it. Sadly, Gato finished about 10 back or so here.
MC was amazing and one of the best announcers ever on the NY racing scene!

Have a good weekend!

Cool video. Bates Motel had to give up 7 pounds to the winner and 5 pounds to Slew O' Gold. Amazing.

I should look more carefully, I just now remembered you already have the MC up through 1983, and then '87. Sorry...

Hey, no worries at all. I very much appreciate your support and comments. I don't have JCGC's right now, sorry.

Bates Motel came up and past Slew O' Gold and Slew O' Gold fought back, Unfortunately Highland Blade caught them both.

Another great call by the incomparable Marshall Cassidy

cordero blew it, focused all of his attention on bates motel. otherwise slew o gold would have swept the fall championship series two years in a row.

"Well if that woman sitting up in the window was Mrs. Bates, then who's buried out in Greemlawn Cemetary?"
gfn02 4 years ago 2
Well- that's a good question! It is a rather creepy thought- of that there is no doubt !
I wonder......
Jazzgirl8888 4 years ago 2
Well, Arbogast tried to find out, and things didn't work out too well for him.

I know and that is precisely why I quit snooping about!Didn't want to meet with the same fate!

Yes, RIP, wonderful gray. A very kind horse from what I've read.
The son of Damascus sure turned on the jets to win it!
