  • this is better than modern warfare

  • Awesome work!!! but now i remember why i don't miss old games, stupid hard

  • Ahh, Space Harrier - Not only did it welcome me to the Fantasy Zone, but it also revealed that many more levels will soon be available, and finally that I was "doing great!" :D

  • ah the memories...

  • I love me some hard difficulty setting Space Harrier.

  • finally some info anyway thanks for the info of the game

  • it not impotant the story

  • This guy's is killin it!!!!!!

  • THIS IS THE SHIT, RIGHT HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember being so addicted to this one. I think Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco where The Hard Rock Cafe is now but before that that was an arcade place in the 80s. Damn. : )

  • Nice turbo controller.

  • @beigemore lol i was thinking the same thing, i always used the trigger and it worked much better.

  • this game still has some of the best visuals( emenies and bosses) aNd great fast paced action

  • this game is cool but it doesnt have story

  • @ninotimecrisisfan why does it need one?

  • So, when you win, all you do is jump on your luck dragon, and fly off...

  • Get ready...!

    AAAUUUGHHH!!!

  • Hmmm ...

Must be on easy - I don't remember the dragons being this easy to defeat

  • Hey, I see that you do 3-rounds burst fire in the gameplay. What were you using? A turbo button?

  • The 3d chip was integrated in the cartridge.

  • i have on 2 visele colsloe the.versions....... sega master system and arcade

  • LoL, the space harrier level in Bayonetta is awesome!

  • if you have a ps3 and you press R1+R2 you get this song while you play the level

  • I have a 360 T.T Would love to play with this song

  • do it?!

  • @fukupower HAHAHA damn straight! Love the hell outta that level! Love how it has music from Space Harrier (both remixed and original)! There's Afterburner and OutRun music in the game as well.

  • Nark was the most difficult stage of them all. Stage 18 wasn't that bad.

  • another underrated yet awesome game provided to you by sega that just wont get a sequel even though it deserves one so badly.

  • those graphics were pretty friggin' impressive when it came out!

  • i fucking love this game.... Pychodelic Sci-Fi for the WIN!!!

  • What is the white dragons name, at the end when he beats the game? the one who shows up to give him a lift?

  • Space Harrier, es un hito al inaugurar una nueva era de los videojuegos en los 80, nunca pasará de moda, la musica del final del juego es simplemente hermosa, gracias!

  • An absolute classic! I recently coded a freeware tribute to Space Harrier called Antagonism. It is available from my channel.

  • guahauuuu !!! que locura 1985 !! thanks !!

  • is space herrier worth the download on tha wii?

  • I would guess that it should play great with the analog stick on the classic controller but i´m not so sure about if using a D-pad(Wiimote only) would be any good.

  • yea im thinkin about downloading it

  • you can actual use the nunchuck like a flight-stick as one option, but it's the hardest to control, and you need to set it to inverted to make it feel right.

  • yes, it's one of the most accurate ports of the original. be careful not to download the mastersystem version though, it's a piece of crap. I still have mine for the actual Mastersystem, but i downloaded this one for wii because I wanted the good arcade version.

  • no u should go out and buy a ps3 and get sonic's ultimate collection of genisis

  • i didn kno they had this game on there thats kool neway i was gettin a ps3 soon

  • dude, you're amazing.

  • Is that it???? 18 levels for that little bastard to hop on the back of a monster & fly away?? I had this game on tape for the Amstrad CPC 464 & I never did complete it. After seeing the ending Im pissed :(

  • i agree ... they put so much into the 17stages leading up to the climatic scene, and thats it? ya wouldve thought theyd throw all those bosses at you at one time ... make it interesting hahaha

  • Well I personally don't play games for the ending, but the gameplay. Its the journey thats important, not the destination.

  • could this gamebe done properly with modern equipment?

  • no, the 360 would slow down like fuck trying to do this game

  • That's not true. The processing power of arcade games from 15 years ago doesn't scratch the surface of what home consoles have today. In addition, a port of the game was put on Genesis and the 32X version is almost identical to the arcade.

  • I have this strange feeling he was joking. In any case, it would be cool to see some updated versions of these old games, kinda like what they did with contra.

  • Actually, in Japan a 3D version of the game was released on the PS2 and was really amazing. Why so many great remakes aren't ported is beyond me.

  • I'm still awed by Sega's powerfull arcade boards. In this case system-16. There was nothing on personal computers or home game systems for almost a decade that could produce the graphics of Sega's arcade boards. While technically only being 16 bit systems(2x68000 running at 12 Mhz) with various co-processors, the systems were demonstrating 32 bit output.

Sega ruled the arcades! They were the powerhouse no one could touch. Namco and at times, Bally/Midway came close.

  • @1czelaya

yes pretty much 32- bit for its time. Its just so surprising how one year a 32 bit computer or arcade would take up a lot of room but now can be in the palm of your hand with 2x the speed.

  • @1czelaya

Space Harrier did not run on System-16

  • @Atomicskull I just went to the System16 website. These are the specs for System 16A:

    Main CPU : MC68000 @ 10 MHz

    Sound CPU : Z80 @ 4 MHz

    Sound chip : Yamaha YM2151 @ 4 MHz & NEC uPD7751 ADPCM Decoder

  • @Atomicskull I'm not doubting you but respectfully, I really don't see any differences hardware wise. However, if you have any further information on Sega's hardware I would appreciate any feedback. Always willing to learn. Thanks.

  • I used to play this game in the arcades when I was in college back in 1986. The one I used play, one could sit in it. The whole thing moved according to how you moved the joystick. The joystick was just like that of jet fighter. I could finish the whole thing without losing a life. I really enjoyed seeing this. In the arcade at that time, these graphics blew everything else away at that time.

  • this is 10 timex better than even the arcade version on the ultimate genesis collection for xbox

  • this game was a non stop rush!!! Fucking awesome. Best stages were when the ceilings came down and the disco lights came on. Any better Rick Astley woulda jumped out sang on the last stage

  • All I can say is, "you're doing great!"

  • Is this any different than the Saturn version? Best game ever, best sounding, best looking, the most fun. I used to dream about playing this.

  • has anyone here ever played the actual arcade with cockpit version?

  • muy bueno, que digo uan suceso de la epoca, era un juego muy intenso, pero muy lindo el final, cada vez que llegaba a esa instancia, gracias, por el recuerdo!

  • i remember completing this..in 85/86, and remember feeing a bit cheated when it didnt give me a free go afterwards!!

    great game tho.

    great moves too

  • I used to Ace this game several times in one just token! great game

  • great game

my all time favorite i got an original game console from sega, when i see this i cant wait to play it again

  • i have this game for my wii (Sega Master rom) and i also have the ps2 remake (part of a sega collection). i found the ps2 waaaaay easier than the sega master version, so easy, that i beat it...

  • Thanks to the Virtual Console Arcade, the arcade version should be coming to the Wii as well.

  • not me either firefly :)... but great music it was, and was it the boss @ stage 2,3,4 that had an "bass"tune progressive completely wrong backbeat x3 so sick me and my mate had it as a private national anthem just couldnt behave ourselves how freaky rockin it was .. dong-dong-ee-dang-dang-ing-danga-di-dong-di-donge-ling.bing-bing-eling (ye ye i know.. just had too)

  • Never managed to complete it. Great work dude.

  • been playing this game for 20+ years so i know a performance when i see one - good moves.

last two stages without taking a hit? great work :)

  • Ah yes. Back when video games were games and not interactive movies.

  • I agree more than 100 percent. I TRIEd to have fun playing all the newer consloe games but all you do watch and watch. They are ALL BORING!

  • This is a game bonus in Megadrive ultimate collection on PS3/XBox360 release february 2009

  • holy shit that looks hard

  • They should make a modern sequel like with what they did with Afterburner.

  • They did T_T - Planet Harriers was really great fun, but as with Afterburner Climax no home version ever came about.

  • Wow, didn't know abou tthat one. Thanks jabroni! They need to port this to the Wii.

  • Dear sega, please bring back this slice of awesome for something next gen

  • I love the music from 3:21 till the end. I would love a full mp3 of it.

  • there's no way that's the arcade version! it was waayyyy too easy.

  • "Me playing the last 3 levels of Space harrier the arcade version..."

    ...on MAME.

  • you're crap!

  • I used to Ace this game back in those days! Paco amusement Center

  • aaaaaaarrggh!! GET READY!!

1986... bunked of school to play Space Harrier in Leicester Square lol what memories..

  • Welcome to the Fantasy Zone! Get Ready!

  • Geez I played this game so much when I was like 9, now I'm 30 and still think it's one of the best games there to be.

  • Awesome graphics for 1985..and music

  • awesome game

  • YOU DOING GREAT!!!

  • I love how the score keeps on going even when there's THE END onscreen :P

  • Excellent i have only ever seen one player this good and that was me lol. i managed to beat the game and die only once but that was a very long time ago. It is also one of my all time favorite arcade games. Thanks for uploading this. 5*

  • Ahhh i had this on the atari, i was about 6 or 7 years old and it was far too hard for me, i only used Trainers back then haha, it kept me busy for a while though =)

  • This game was the best part of Shenmue game. A great game that includes another great game!

  • this game was in shenmue or something?

  • yep. Not only this game, Shenmue had also Hang On, Outrun and Afterburner 2

  • yea when you go to the arcade you can play this game.

I just got shemnue back and im playing it again!

  • Thanks alot, and forgot to say thanks to assiman, thanks.

  • Man, my buddy and I spent hundreds of dollars on this game in the 80's when we were kids. Literally, rolls of quarters. We beat it repeatedly, and always had crowds gathered each time. So glad to see the actual arcade version posted on here and not the cheap console knock-offs that cropped up in the subsequent years.

  • This is not the real arcade. Mame version ?

  • Mame version is the arcade version

  • Is that neo from the matrix playing this game!!!

    Awesome reflexes!

  • Yeah, I used to rock this in the Arcade. I would complete it without dying. I love the one that when you sat in it, it moved along with your character. By the way, one can fire at that rapid rate without turbo rapid fire. As matter a fact I could shoot a lot faster. Its what you had to do back in those days.

  • looks like someone's playing the 32x version with turbo/rapid-fire enabled! :p

  • they are the same version

  • damn nice playing dude

  • this game is freaking.............awesome XD

wow thats tight you play good i want to play that game.

  • they should make this game for the next gen consoles ie xbox 360 and ps3, plus wi dont forget that. space harriwer rulz

  • this game was a classic. I sucked at it of course but my brother was decent. I remember staring at people who were good at this. I think I only saw the ending once or twice in my life on the coin operated version.

  • God. I was the best in my home town on the coin-op SH.

I remember having a mass of ppl watching me play it every time. I finshed it on 1 life every time! No one could beat my score! The trick was to move round the outside of the screen.

    Thanks for the memories. x

Mind you.... I rekon i can kick your ass.

    lol

  • I can't think of any game that had better graphics than this at the time. Released in 1985 (which means it must have been actually programmed in 83-84) Home consoles released many years later had ports of this which still could not do the arcade version justice.

  • I had this game for I think Sega Saturn. It was called Sega Ages. GREAT music!!!

I loved the music more than the gameplay!

  • Yeah this game was hard, it was designed to eat your quarters.

The trick to staying alive is to keep moving.

Most games don't make sense though. I don't get that comment...

  • This game is visionary!

  • I think I beat it maby 2 or 3 times on one credit (25 cents) back in it's day :P

  • Cool > I used to play had had Shenmue. It was one of the mini game features.

  • best console verion is 32x, saturns is a little faulty especially with some load times but thats probably cause it comes with other games on the cd so they didn't but in the full effort of the single cartridge game. had both. never was good at this game in the arcades when I first played it for a while.. good game

  • Nope, dreamcast and X-box, within shenmue and shenmue 2 are arcade perfect ports. Except the controls that is. lol.

  • And you and Uriah fly off and make hot passionate love.

    The end.

  • HHAHA ROFL

  • Sprite heaven $P@©€ I$ Ѐ€P~~~~~~

  • Este video juego era la sensacion de 1985, yo siempre llegaba a la final con una ficha y con una o dos vidas, y el final era muy bonito con una musica ad hoc, ya no hacen videos como ese

  • There'll never be another like it.

  • hahaha i remember that stupid caterpillar at the end!! brilliant game. damn it i miss my sega!

  • this game looks awesome

  • Brillant memories!! Use to play this in 1988 when I was 14,was my favirite game. Thanks for sharing this.

  • Fuckin' hell. I still have that music locked in my head from 17 years ago.

    ta.

  • You can find some pretty good Space HArrier theme remixes at OCRemix

  • I loved that game. "You're doin' great!"

  • whoa nice i've been there...todays games dont come close i miss sega

  • Classic game. Your skill is awesome. You should have been a jet fighter pilot.

  • Hi. Thanks for posting. I used to love this game in the 80's when I used to play Robotron and other games, but Space Harrier had amazing graphics for its day. I loved the surreal landscapes in the game.

Good reflexes you have. I've forgotten how fast Space Harrier is.

I used to be able to finish the game on a quarter. The only stage that I risked losing a man was Stage 14: Astute. I'd like to see that stage again on youtube.

  • Can you answer me this question? As many times I've played this game, how come you can't destroy objects up close on the ground while running?

  • Man I waited 15 years to see that ending? What a let down! :) HA! That's cool you made it though. But I wish it was more than a furry kitty cat catapillar thing. I loved this game. I liked the music, and it was the first game I had played like that with a jetpack allowing you to fly around like that.

  • the world record for this game is 35,774,740 set by nick hutt for the uk on aug. 13, 2005

  • I'd be impressed if Turbo wasn't on. You could have done it.

  • hehe, I used to play some days after highschool, I used to play this, afterburner, turbo outrun, 1942, gauntlet and dragonslair 2, I got so good at these games I used to finish all of them (except gauntlet) with just one quarter :P ah those ol days

  • In the master system version I think there was an extra boss called haya oh, the tune to that was awsome, it's a pity they didn't include it in the coin-op.

  • the music was great...lol

  • It is!

  • I had this game for the atari... it was impossible to hve reflexes like that lol I used to think the game was rigged then a crappy 3D version n a sega compilation came out for the PS2 and whooped its ass wat a load of crap... the original was geat i loved it and i think everyone should

  • Great reflexes and skills! I still have this game for the Sega 32X. In 1994, it looked and sounded as good as it did back in 1985 - hell, it's still great to look at now!

I thought that the bosses were a bit of a pushover though, and I still hate that ear-splitting sound that occurs whenever the red or blue robots appeared!

  • I remember the frame rate and ultra fast 3d stuff on here used to blow me away. I sucked at it, but would always watch people play, amazed by the technology for that time.

  • DAMN..i remember when i finished this game ages ago

  • Can you believe it actually cost a dollar to play? Of course that was the "Super Deluxe" version that had you sit in a moving chair in front of a giant projection screen, so the thing was 10X15 feet! You'd be bounced around in the chair as you moved your character and the model I saw seemed to work excellent...

  • my all time greatest game

  • *AWESOME* game. I remember seeing the full moving cabinet version in my local arcade when I was 5, and finally completing it (it had a bug which made level 14 nearly impossible) at the age of 20, with all the arcade staff hanging around watching.

  • The best game and soundtrack ever!!!!

  • Indeed!

  • i used to love this my best ever acheivement was to beat it and only die once.

  • This is awesome! I beat this game with my best friend at the Disneyland arcade and had a crowd of people gathered to watch. Man, you brought back some memories!

  • christ! remember when games were this tough?! you make it look easy though!

  • good qustion the best sega arcade game and hang on allso

  • Why did the bosses die so easily?

  • Because he's using MAME with a turbo'd pad so every button press fires about four shots at a time.

  • bladdy cheat, I always set my controls proprtionaly to the arcade, otherwise your not really playing it.

  • This reminds me of school days and Shenmue.

  • Look better then my sega master system version.

  • WOW, the arcade version looks really great

  • Always loved the cheesy euro-disco 1st level music!

  • What an amazing game!!!! Don't make like this anymore.
