  • WTF did I just witness?

  • How do you get you heavier strings to shut up when tapping?

  • @martin10921 I'm using a damper near the nut. You can tie a old sock as dampener or a hair ribbon.

  • We put bass solos in my band

  • @BassAsLeaders <= Nice name! I was just listening to "Tempting Time" right now, what a coincidence! :D

  • Still have that little fuzz on the last root F#. Jazz bassists look so far down on those kinds of mistakes. If you major in a six string bass, you're probably not aiming for a jazz style, but just having that fuzz, in any music, is amateur playing. Everything else was great. Remember that the last note in every bit of music is the end of the statement, thus it should be the best and cleanest. The final note, or chord, might as well count for 50% of the music.

  • @DanielProctor775 Thanks for your advice Daniel. Gonna make it better next time. And yes, Jazz is not my main thing. Cheers!

  • @nukebass No problem :) cheers!

  • how many string bass is that?

  • @lvgordo Normally 6 strings.. After a few shots of vodka, 12 strings.

  • @nukebass "Normally 6 strings.. After a few shots of vodka, 12 strings." Haha, I lol'd bout that xD

  • @nukebass this comment i super like

  • what chorus are you using?

  • @KaslarProductions I'm not sure, coz this video was shot 4 years ago, but probably a BOSS ;-)

  • sweeping on a bass!? awwwww bust!

  • Mean. The tone reminds me of Metallica. :D

    Keep it up!

  • One more reason to get a 6 string :)

Great playing, and great tone, most people have fret noise all over the place...

  • great! we`ve got similar technique

  • Oops. I guess that was kinda unclear. I know the bass can be a rhythm instrument. What I meant is that it is not SOLELY a rhythm instrument. It can definitely be that (just look at Mark King), But It can solo as well as many other things.

Hope that clears things up ;D

  • OH. Great playing man. Very clean.

  • Thanks a buch SPARTA, check my others videos ;-)

  • LOL! Sorry jazzbo66zz, but your comments are a bunch of drivel with big words. Just about any instrument can be a solo instrument if played by a talented musician, bass being one of them. It seems to me that you have absolutely no experience playing the bass or else you would show a *wee* bit more respect for what it can do. Besides, all you say is that bass is a rhythm instrument with no reason as to why it can't be a solo instrument. You're basing an argument on empty words.

  • for everyone saying that bass is NOT a solo instrument I say this CLIFF FUCKING BURTON!

  • I also say John Entwhistle

  • as well as victor wooten, larry graham, lynn seaton, and ray brown

  • agreed

  • @ravenshadevox Cliff Burton is the least likely person I would choose to represent solo bass guitar.

  • Jazz, Bass is both a solo and rhythm instrument. You need to just shut the fuck up.

  • if the bass ever becomes a solo instrument this technique might make sense, but try getting a gig playing a restaurant or a wedding with this and see where it gets you. bass is a rythym instrument and is about anchoring chord progressions to rhythym. everything else is bs.

  • see jaco pastorius, victor wooten, stanley clarke, marcus miller, or any other bass pioneer etc etc etc, tell them what u just said, theyll laugh at u like i did!

  • you are agreeing with me but i dont think you know it....fusion!? these kinds of technician's skills proved in the end to be just empty virtuosity. this school of bass playing piles musical clutter on top of clutter and the result is a very busy, very tacky kind of middle class wall paper that does not even work as elevator music. It is advantageous to have a larger musical purpose in mind before you decide to aquire another flashy technique. Competition is an artistic dead end.

  • Well, it's not about competition or virtuosity... what is virtuosity anyway? It's just about a different way of playing... there are no rules for Art.

P.S: I'm a professional musician and I play at wedding parties EVERY weekend... sometimes twice a week... and I know how to behave inside the gig as a professional bass player ;-)

  • the next generation of bassists will go back to Eddy Gomez and rediscover that less is more so be forwarned, what goes around comes around.

  • Eddy Gomez is a great bass player! But "less is more"... well, it's a dangerous statement... I think even Eddy wouldn't agree with that... we are talking about Music... Art isn't something definable... it's just expression... it's kinda like language... I can speak/write/read English and my native language (Portuguese)... a lil bit of Spanish (just reading)... so, which one is the best language? Could you tell me?

  • dude ur all over the place and im sorry to say i thinks its BS. since when did jaco and victor wooten's skills prove to be "empty virtuosity?! they are amazing musicians both with extreme impact on music as a whole. how are u saying that virtuostic bass playing is tacky wallpaper, wtf does that even mean?! and before u use the word musical purpose again; do u kno what it means? are u a musician? aquiring technique gives u more facility and more means to express any musical idea u may have

  • Thank you for explaining the confines of my tool for artistic expression. I was getting confused by trying to branch out and express myself, but thankfully you came along to explain the limits of what I can and cannot do on my instrument. People like you are very helpful in cultivating a creative musical environment

  • I'm not going to say no offense because I mean a SHITLOAD of offense right now. Your fucking retarded. Their is no "solo" instrument, only solo players. Before Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, Jimmy Hendrix, the guitar was a rhythm instrument. So what makes the bass any different? Nothing. It can't be played solo like a guitar because it's not a guitar, it's a bass.

  • Examples of solo instruments are those having repitoires for solo performance. The classical gutar, piano and pipe organ would be examples.

You can add another 12 srings to a bass dye your hair green and play standing on your head and the bass is still a rythym instrument Leland Sklar and David Hungate have been successful as studio musicians because they have always understood that they were playing the music first and the instrument second and you still have this backwards in my opinion.

  • @jazzbo66zz um.. lol.. Bass is great solo instrument and I can see that you are one of those who don't want any other opinions. And so what if bass is usually only for rythym instrument. That doesnt mean that it has to be rythym instrument. I play bass in my band and I don't use it just to play rythym. Listen to some good music with good bassist and you can see/hear that it is not just for rythym :P

  • @THEFINSOADFAN

Successful ensemble players accept a discipline imposed by the composition being performed. If your primary interest is more personal than professional so be it. In the long run I can guarantee that you will discover these are not the same ambition. I suspect the limitation that results from never having performed in an orchestra reading sheet music is in the end an insurmountable obstacle. It is no wonder popular music is no longer worth listening to.

  • @jazzbo66zz I hate when ppl try to sound smart :P I hope you are then just smartass. Also I think popular music has never been worth listening. Every band SHOULD try to make music that sounds like 'em. That is why I have lot of respect to bands like SOAD and KoRn, cause they made something totally new. ofc they have their idols, but still they created "new kind of music".

  • @THEFINSOADFAN

I get your point; but there is not much danger of you sounding smart, so why worry about if it is not one of your options? SOAD and KoRn are mass marketed pop groups whether you know it or not and whether you like them or not is beside the point. There is a reason why these videos are typically shot in the venue of someone's suburban bedroom and that is because these guys have already reached a dead end.

  • @jazzbo66zz You are right in that KoRn is thesedays just market shit, but I can see that you don't know anything about 'em worth of knowing. Also wtf music do you listen if you say you don't like popular music, you say nonpopular music popular..?

  • John Entwhistle would turn over in his grave at your comment, Bass is a guitar you fail

  • What I mean by that is, it won't have the same effect as if a guitar would do it. The bass is a guitar just like the baritone trumpet is a trumpet. But the octaves and tones are completely different. Clarified?

  • kill yourself

  • Well this technique is rarely ever used just by itself, its offten used either in parts or as a whole arpeggio sweep in a solo, for both guitar AND bass.

So its not like this is all you do so to speak, you can actually implement this into being a better rythym player too dude, so know what your talking about.. Plus with funk techniques you can play bass as a solo instrument by making percussive thumps with the thumb while making melotic runs with teh fingers..

  • UR NUTS! XD

  • Whoa!!! I'm new to 6 strings bass and this is so inspirating man, thx for the vid.

  • You're welcome bassbuddy, feel free to watch my other videos. Glad to know that I'm inspiring you. Good luck with your new bass ;-)

  • where would one buy one of these 9 string things? im making one but im not too hopeful.

  • you are absolutely incredible, tapping has become the forefront of my style and this video just opened my eyes to the possibilities! 5 stars all the man!!

  • I'm glad to see that you got influenced by my playing style buddy, keep on rocking bassmate ;-)

  • Oh Gosh..NUKEBASS! I wrote to you from Singapore 7 years back and you e-mailed me the tapping book you wrote. Man ,, let people hear what you can actually do with your tapping and prove that there's no match to you. Great to find you here!

  • Thank you a lot buddy!

  • What type of bass is that?

  • It's a Tagima TG-6B, 6-strings (around '98)... Brazilian made... not a hi-end Bass, but work for me ;-)

  • awesome!

think you can put some lessons on 8 finger tapping up? i play guitar and i'm interested in learning how to do it. i've heard you should think of cords for it, right now i've been doing tapping with just my middle finger so i tend to think of scales and my chord knowledge isn't that great right now i know one movable inversion of each major, minor, and 7th chord and the standard inversions, but that's it

  • Hi! There's a book about guitar tapping by Jennifer Batten. You can find it for download on some guitar oriented blogs. Good stuff! Search for her videos here in YT too ;-)

    Cheers!

  • haha, it's not somethin i can find at barnes and noble? lol well if it's sold at guitar center i'll check it out, i've decided to cut back on book buyin but i think i'll grab this one

  • meu deus... muito limpo o som cara... parabens

    muito bom mesmo \../

  • brasileiro???

    de onde??

lol .. parabens cara .. muito bom

  • Obrigado brother!

    Sou de Fortaleza ;-)

  • Tight, if you wanna really rock out, lean on F#

  • So says Tom Morello.

  • is that a yamaha TRB1006?

  • Hi! It's a Brazilian made Tagima TG-6B. Early 6 strings model (with wide string spacing)... about 1997.

  • cool man. just by curiosity, have you ever covered flight of the bumblebee on bass? cos theres another guy also named nukebass who does it if you havent...

    yes no?

  • Yea, it was me who recorded it, but actually I didn't like my rendition. I'm gonna record it again someday, with an orchestral background (sequenced stuff) and with a better equipment. You can find some of my stuff (mp3) on Soundclick website (google it), including "Flight of the Bumblebass". Search for Roberto William there ;-)

    Cheers!

  • wow, man, you should feel like a celebrity now HA.

ive had your recording of bumblebass on my computer for ages, i love it.

    VERY good stuff man

  • Thanks bud! I'm glad you liked :-)

  • That was cool!

  • Ibanez SR706 ? What kind of Amp are you using ? Cool vid btw,

  • Hi buddy! It's a Brazilian made Tagima TG-6B. Early 6 strings model... about 1997.. waaaay better than the new models. It's not a hi-end Bass, but I love it! The amp is my study amp... nothing special too... a Warm Music Rock Bass RB108... I think it's only 20 or 30W... really small amp. Oh, I was using a bit of chorus too :-)

    Thanks!

  • haha cheers man, yea not a bad bass at all. lol I refrained from commenting on the chorus, but it was definently a very present sound in your tone ;). Best of luck in the future man, Ill be sure to check futher vids.

  • Thanks man! I'll need luck indeed! Need more gigs to get more money to enhance my equipment, LOL! Actually, I need to buy another bass... a 4 or 5 stringed... and a not so heavy as this one. My gigs lasts 4 hours, and those 10 pounds (yes, TEN F****** POUNDS!!!) are destroying my left shoulder! I think I should buy a Steinberger, hahaha :-D

    Cheers from Brazil!

  • ermm any chance of seeing that in slow mo

i need to learn it :D

  • When I buy a new camera :-)

  • lol

    thanks !

  • If you're studying bass playing I think you would love to visit my blog ;-) Just Google my nick or "piloto de baixo eletrico"

    Cheers!

  • lol i'll do that some time

    :D

  • is tht spanish or portuguese?

  • Portuguese, we are Brazilians. But I can understand and write in English if you want, so don't worry ;-) Do you have any question? Feel free to ask.

  • pretty awesome dude

  • Any instructional videos? I neeeeed to learn this

  • Unfortunately no... I need to buy a new camera first. Too much expensive here in Brazil... I need to play 3 gigs to get enough money to buy one :-P And I need to buy new pickups first, it's a priority ;-)

  • Damn thats some sick shit.

  • i have been playing bass for 18 years now , im 30 , and this is the best explanation to do something right.

I dont know you so i dont know if you are a good or poor bass player, but you sure a re a good teacher.

  • Oh, thank you bassbrother! Good to hear that, coz I always considered myself a poor teacher :-) Your comment inspired me to start giving lessons again. I study Music at a Music College here in my city, and some students give lessons to community in what we call "Extension Courses". The Bass player who is giving this course will be replaced soon. This can be my chance to start giving lessons again ;-)

  • Good for you man!!

remember that the only one that sets limits for your own is you.

you can do anything u want coz musicians are privileged minds.

u know what im talkin about.

    Keep it up bro!!

ps watch me playing and tell me your opinion

    Peace

  • nice! check out my bass taping vids!

  • OMFG you have my respect

  • Clean.

  • Hey man, could you get me tabs or something? That is sweet!

  • its an F# minor arpeggio dude, look it up.

  • lol you dont need a tab for an arpeggio lol

  • Ok you are quite good in tapping but look at your left hand technique...it's a little bit uncorrect...your pinkey is always tight..if you don't use this finger you should left it curled..i had this problem 'cause i was self-taught..now that i've got the right impostation i can do everything with precision..so keep practice!

  • Actually I use this finger without problems... but this arpeggio position doesn't need it ;-) But the fact it is a bit "tense" could be a problem indeed. But anyway, I almost stopped playing and will get back studying soon. Cheers! :-)

  • Oh yes..i was able to play any song without problems but the technique was uncorrect so i stopped for 2 weeks to correct "the lifted pinkey" and get the right position of this finger when i didn't use it! Especially when you use the only the ring but also the middle, the pinkey should be folded behind as i told you..if you'll fix it your impostation will be flawless!

  • Yeah! Having it on a relaxed position give you the advantage of being "closer" to fretboard when you need it. Thanks for yer advice!

  • Hey can you message me your gear setup and what effects your using, I love your tone!

  • Nothing special really... actually I use a pretty cheap rig :-) A Tagima 6-er Bass w/ active pickups (generic circuit), a BOSS CS-3 Compressor/Sustainer, a cheap 506-II that I'm using only a Chorus, and a 20 Watts amp w/ a 10" speaker. Don't have money for better stuff right now... here in Brazil, instruments related stuff are damn expensive :-P

  • Sounds good to me anyway =)

  • pretty neat.

  • awesome tone, man

  • nuke..send that tab to me

  • cool men.. want to see my video?

  • hey could you email the tab for this to me?

  • nice.... i enjoyed that...

  • you shredbnitch

  • very well done = awesome bass too

  • very well played.

  • Not a Yamaha :-) It's a Tagima (Brazilian made). But seems a lot with Yamaha TRB series ;-)

  • nice Yamaha RBX JM2. wanted to get it but too much for me right now..

  • nice.

  • Yep Mighty Bass, I have some mp3 hosted on Soundclick.com

    www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=128213

  • Have you written any music using this tapping style?

  • Thats cool, looks like ur using all fingers aprt from thumbs

  • Yups! I'm using all fingers but thumbs and left hand "little" finger :-)

  • fukin sweet dude!!! ur my kind of bass player

  • Thanks! :-) Wanna record some more, but I don't have a digital camera anymore :-P

  • kool..

  • Thanks! I only have these few videos, but I have a lot of audio stuff recorded between 2002 and 2005 ;-) Feel free to listen some more here:
