The distortion is acieved by effectivly rapidly vercally scrolling the screen. Oh and here's a cheat for you to try if you still have this demo:

Push B, Push U, Release B, Push S, Release U, Push return, Release S, Release return.

The hardware scroller is now disabled. Now use the following keys on the keypad:

Scroll up: 8, Scroll down: 2, Speed up: push gain, Stop scrolling: 5
