It's not safer than East Asia such as Japan and South Korea. And Eastern Europe is pretty dangerous, with murder rates on par with many American cities. Russia's homicide rate is actually higher than Mexico's.

Murders rose 14% last year in New York City. Flint Michigan has a higher crime rate now than it did in the 80s and 90s. Drug wars can come back here, therefore we could see gang violence like the 90s again.

Back in 1990, New York City had well over 2,000 murders. New York is certainly safer than 20 years ago, but that's because the drug wars of the 80s and 90s are over. Now New York pulls in about 500 murders per year and the murder rate is about 8 per 100,000. London's is 2 per 100,000. NYC is 4 times more murderous than London.
