It's an act of reverence that every citizen can show to those who came before us and a promise to those coming after us.

Today I was teaching in an 11th grade English class in San Diego where a student refused to stand for the pledge of allegiance. I asked him why? He said he could could not stand and support a government that would coerce him into a meaningless act.
