Gandhi's method was inspired by the Sermon on the Mount, and as someone who has studied modern biblical scholarship for years, I think we can say that Gandhi got it right.. When I listen to Harper with the Blind Boys on "Picture of Jesus," I sometimes think of Gandhi.
I believe that at sometime in the future most of modern society will see that what religions have in common is more important that what differentiates them. These things are humanity, empathy, peace, respect for each other and the world we live in (the environment and animals) Your placing of the pictures with this song shows this perfectly! Thank you :)
Courage isn't about one religion or one faith. It's about carrying on when you don't want to. Beautiful video! Who gives a damn if anyone is offended. It doesn't matter.
@jimbobf1 Fuck you, you tool. Take your inner peace and cram it up your ass. Its a youtube video comment, you aren't saving the world you douche. Get over yourself.
I might of called it a belief in a higher power...that more lies beyond our earthly existence, which is faith. But men will do the same things for love. Maybe they loved mankind, having a willingness to sacrifice for something they believed was in the greater good, once again taking faith. I cant imagine those men did it for the love of an individual. Their martyrdom almost guaranteed, they proceed as if part of a prophecy. Thats faith, faith that it's worth it.
Your description is interesting. You say that they acted out of faith. I would say that they acted out of LOVE. What makes Jesus special was his uncompromising message for us to love all, regardless. What makes his followers pathetic is that they too often create barriers between people and see faith as more important than Love. There is no higher calling than to love all equally. This video reflects that. Thanks for posting.
This is the first time I've actually read what someone had written about a song lest alone an upload - well said! Good on you for talking sense. Wicked tune. Speaks VOLUMES. Lx
woa! would you believe that i have NEVER heard of these singers until just now. Oh my gosh, i have goosebumps all over my arms and my back and this overwhelming feeling. WOW. Truly great singers. Thats all i gotta say
Oh my! I happened upon this song as background music on a tribute video to Tom Crean, an Antarctic explorer. He had faith and then some. Every now and then you have a moment when you count your blessings. Listening to this does that very thing. Absolutely hauntingly brilliant.
@ArtFart001 The song is clearly a testament to the power of faith ("I just reach for Mother Mary, and I shall not walk alone"), so a non-believer might be unimpressed. I still am, simply because the joy and love with which this is sung moves me.
@Chiller326 i think though, a purely religious or even spiritual reading of this song doesnt do justice to the topic of companionship and community that it is also about. the song uses a spiritual lens to view humanity, not the other way around.
@Chiller326 So glad you took the time, and really listened with your heart, it is a beautiful song, and those fellers are amazing. They do another one called Way down in the hole, try it sometimes.................. You are getting closer!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@shelley72222 I don't need to get closer to anything. I'm perfect where I am, faith-wise. Of course, what works for me might not work for you, and vise-versa
I agree with your assessment of the song. If faith isn't the foremost image in your mind when you listen to this song, then you have never had faith in anything...
@allnightjohnson I'm not big on faith, you see pictures of MLK, Ghandi, the guy in front of the tank... tell me how is the state of racial tension and government oppression in countries like China, India and the US?
I hate this bullshit style of piano playin... I mostly like the group though, they're like a funky version of old time gospel groups like that Fairfield Four
@busessuck1 im curious, what do you mean by "bullshit style of piano playin", it sounds just fine, sounds like something i would want to learn how to play
@midnitewite ain't sure what it's called... like a toned down version of the stuff you here on soft rock, you'd probaby find an identical progression on something by the fray or coldplay or whatever indy bands are called
@busessuck1 I was agreeing with the person who posted the video. If it is your intention to undermine my faith, or bolster some misplaced feelings of intellectual superiority you have, with trying to draw me into some philosophical debate, your barking up the wrong tree. There are some of us in this world who find inspiration is songs of other folk's faith. I ignored your comments about the validity of the music, feel free to ignore my comment as well, it wasn't directed at you.
i was introduced to the blind boys from alabama on a ben harper dvd. i have seen them live and as they walk out on stage they hold each others belt loops to stay in line, they sing with a soulful grace. i enjoyed the pics you put with the song. i believe in all paths to god. they really are a moving force of emotion .
if my life had a soundtrack, this would play about two years ago. i was 15 when i lost my left leg in a car accident on a major street near my home. i was bleeding so bad, and the doctors said that if the person that was there to save me had not put the tourniqute on me, i would have bled out two minutes before they arrived.
i just have to thank my best friend for doing that, he saved my life, and i can never repay him

Ahh..I see. You aren't Catholic. If you're interested in knowing more regarding this, granted you have an open mind, I suggest you reading the works of Scott Hahn.
Mr.Nathansasher: It says reach for Mother Mary because the song is speaking about "not walking alone" Mary helps us all walk to Jesus. Many religions now-a-days have shunned her out of their lives because they are under the incredibly false belief that Catholics in particular believe she should be worshiped. MARY should NOT be worshiped, nor does she desire to be. However seeing as she was the first tabernacle, no one better to help us in our journey. We could all use the intercession.
point taken. but at the same time Jesus is equelly as accessable without Highlighting and giving praise to Mary. i firmly believe that music is strickly to be used as a tool to uplift Jesus Christ (as it was created for). when you replace the main focus on any gospel/praise song with Mother mary and not Jesus then i truelly believe this is a problem. we dont get strength nor any form of power from someone who is in the grave awaiting the ressurection like anybody else...
this is quite easily one of my favourite gospel songs... the music is devine... the singing is so beautiful and harmonic. but reach for mother mary?? i dunno, i think thats wrong. JESUS is the only one whom praise and worshop is worthy....
@seanpoet0 - truly soulful songs like this remind us that a parents love is eternal. I can never har this without singing along with tears in my eyes. One of the greatest songs and definately the most inspiring delivery of all time.
It's perfectly right that you combine different images - different cultures, different events, same impulse - and it's right that you say it's all about faith. Good luck and thanks for sharing this,
...seemingly unrelated... what the images and the song have in common is a common thing everywhere available for free, and so often missed dearly: LOVE.
Thank you, Sahneknuffi, for sharing this lovely song with the world, and for reminding us how fragile life is.
Romantic Brothers - Flowers ! Great new dance about real situation in world and politics! Make Your moves! Romantic Brothers - Flowers! In Utube and i-tunes!!
Lost was a good show, but I got turned onto these guys through the Late show with David Letterman. Lost stole this song, and I have now returned it to it's rightful place, that is with the Veterans who have made the ultimate sacrifice all over the world fighting for our freedom. It is now linked to my tribute on flickr. : ) God bless the USA, and the soldiers who have made possible the freedom that so many take for granted.
This is one of my favorite songs. Period. Have you ever seen an a cappella group cover this? The UGA Accidentals did an amazing cover in the ICCA tournament this year!
anyone know what that first image is? I agree with most of the comments, that is is an incredible song, I've been a Ben Harper fan for 10+ years, and this version is better than any Ben has, no offense Ben; my favorite image is of the column of tanks being stopped by the one protester...to me that images represents the history of progress for the human race, those of us who have some semblance of freedom have it because of those who stood against impossible odds before us
Oh come on. If anyone would find that inappropriate, they live in the middle ages. Surely we have seen through the delusions of fairy-tales and religions by now?
I found this a few months ago, and every time I come back, this really touches my soul and heart. I can totally relate to the words, and the music is simply wonderful. Such power and conviction! It is my mission to spread God's word, not only on Flickr, where I have linked this piece, but in real life. I shout it from the highest mountains, that Jesus Christ is my saviour.
this is absolutely beautiful and should be required listening for anyone that likes inspirational songs. i wish i had known of this for my own mother's funeral service. it would have been so fitting to see her off so her journey and heavenly reward.
The first time i heard this song it was on Pandora on a station i started on the Fairfield Four (my favorite gospel group), and i have been playing it over and over since then
Oh My God! I haven't such a peacefull music for a long time... Thank You for this, man! Still trying to find the piano sheet for this music....it's just TOO beautifull
it´s just beautiful how music can create such emotions.
I like the piano version more than the version with the acoustic guitar. Unfortunately i can´t find the sheets for piano :( if someone could help me out, i would really appreciate it.
This is truly an amazing vocal and song. It touches my soul. Amazing. Great job aswell putting the video together. Met them after a gig and they were pure sound. We had great fun trying to get them to autograph my ticket stub. Great people great music. What more could anyone want.
These guys are great musicians. I love this song, its classic. but i am a little confused. when did this guy become catholic? I in now way mean anything negative. can someone explain this to me? why are they saying mother Mary, instead of Jesus? ive never heard any of his other songs mention mother Mary?
I loved it on Lost because it was one of the first times they had used music as the background instead of it appearing naturally in the scene. It made it so much more powerful, and it fit Sawyer so well.
Ambiguous. At first I thought the wording was a standalone sentence asking me whether I enjoyed being homosexual, but then I realised that it was actually a continuation of "obscure and awesome".
Content:
Flawed. Use of a derogatory term like "faggot" implies homosexuality is bad, but the trolling leads from my comment "obscure and awesome"; it leaves me wondering whether Chubbbhead likes ChubbbHead.
@SimpsonPlaysJackson Nice reply faggot. McCandless is a dead rotting fucking moron. No wonder why you like him. He was a faggot too. Eat shit and kill yourself. Faggot
that's the song played at the end of sawyer's very first episode... and usually i don't listen to that kind of music... but god... i love that song...!!! it touches me everytime i listen to it and it's so peaceful...
great blurb and fantastic tune

Great song and great Vocals...
it´s just beautiful how music can create such emotions.
I like the piano version more than the version with the acoustic guitar. Unfortunately i can´t find the sheets for piano :( if someone could help me out, i would really appreciate it.

They should have had the guys perform this during the Hope for Haiti thing. I think it's a very uplifting song and very appropriate for the situation

These guys are great musicians. I love this song, its classic. but i am a little confused. when did this guy become catholic? I in now way mean anything negative. can someone explain this to me? why are they saying mother Mary, instead of Jesus? ive never heard any of his other songs mention mother Mary?

yea, its such a great show =) I love this song

I loved it on Lost because it was one of the first times they had used music as the background instead of it appearing naturally in the scene. It made it so much more powerful, and it fit Sawyer so well.

@TheChubbbhead
YouTroll Score {2/10}
Grammar:
Additional Comments:
RIP Christopher McCandless.

@SimpsonPlaysJackson Nice reply faggot. McCandless is a dead rotting fucking moron. No wonder why you like him. He was a faggot too. Eat shit and kill yourself. Faggot

justicewithasword- They Wash Away by joe purdey. Kinda an uplifting song about how your problems will go away
Solider501 2 years ago
it strange its so fuckin hard for me to find great music like this anyone know anything else that is good nothing mainstream
justicewithasword 2 years ago
eh in relation to you looking for good non mainstream things.
if your in any way into guitarists
i HIGHLY recommend an irish blues guitarist called Rory Gallagher.
i mean the guy was loved by the likes of bob dylan, john lennon (rolling stones wanted him) he influenced Slash.
Check out WheelsWithin Wheels for a more sad song by him.
Too Much Alcohol is an unreal blues acoustic song that he did.
Tom Waits is good for hmm piano jazz kind of music
Jose Feliciano Puerto rican blind guitarist
