Hi there. I know people will probably pay no attention to this, but I'll try either way
Since I was 8, my dream is to be a famous game developer. I'm developing my third game right now, and it's in early alpha development. It's name is CastleForge. It's kinda buggy right now, and that's why I came here. I need your help to test my game, and to give me feedback. You can download it/check the project here: create-games [dot] com [slash] project [dot] asp?id=2233 . Thumbs up so everyone can see it!
J.C.! I downloaded this game and played it. ITS SO FREAKIN AWESOME! It so action packed like a regular shooter, but it plays so much like Deus Ex or System Shock! I wish there were more games like this! You should make a sequel!
@MAT0R0 I think he stated somewhere that there won't be any sequels or prequels to Iji. A damn shame, but I understand that he wants to go with other projects.
I just started playing this game about yesterday or so and I already love it. Thank you so much for putting so much hard work into a game and then just giving it out to people. To be honest, I would have paid for a game this good.
The first time ive seen this game, i was like "dude, wtf with his game?, his graphics are terrible! and it looks a bit weird e.e" and then i was gonna play to see if it was really bad... and you know what? i regret of what i said, i finished this game, the soundtrack, the epic final battle, bosses, EVERYTHING was amazing, and then i was more amazed because this game was made with GAME MAKER! and i dont know how the heck you did that... Masterpiece dude, thanks for making this Masterpiece...
@Ultimortal Use the same magic you use for your games. Yes, I am certain you are a magician, there is no other way you can make so much awesomness with so little.
By the way, I'm just curious, but did you get inspired by Cave Story to create freeware games, or was it just something you thought of all of sudden?
@Oudaen I've been making games since QBasic and Klik'n'Play in 1994, it wasn't until 2004 that I found Game Maker and got more serious about it. Cave Story was a great inspiration though, due to being made by one very determined guy!
@Ultimortal Woah, that's quite a long time. Props for you, I bet it takes a lot of patience to make such excellent games. ;)
On a side note, will HyperDuck Music ever cooperate with you for the music for an upcoming project again? I really love what they did with the soundtrack of Iji. =)
@XxDahamonnahxX It took four years to make version 1.0, and the total worktime up to 1.6 is around 3500 hours. I released four other games while working on it, because it was so monotonous. :p
@XxDahamonnahxX Yes, I learned a lot from making this, and I'm glad for the positive feedback it eventually recieved too.
I won't sell it because I want everyone to be able to play it. I don't need the money, I already have a job. Releasing a game commercially is also very troublesome and doesn't let me do whatever I want - after working with certain publishers / IP holders out there, I've started to appreciate the unlimited creativity of freeware even more.
@barelycertain Nope. I'm fine with having ported Garden Gnome Carnage (the original remains free on my site), but Iji I don't want anyone making money on, including me.
That's something I really admire. Of course, I wouldn't mind seeing Iji come to other platforms, but I like that you treat Iji with so much care. It's a sign of a true artist. I really envy you!
Played this game through passively and violently when it first came out and ready for a replay yet again! One of the most fucking brilliant indie games I've ever played.
@Vordh0sbn Sorry, there's no support for translations, so if someone wants to do a translation for Iji they'll have to download the source from my page and change the text and graphics. If a _complete_ translation is made (a Russian one is already in the works) then I'll definitely host it on my site!
However, if I make Iji version 1.7 afterwards (which I may do after Hyper Princess Pitch), there's no way to easily copy the translation into that version; you would have to do that manually.
One of the greatest indie games I've played. I is up there with the likes of Cave Story. Few indie devs can hope to compared to Pixel. Ultimoral can be.
I've said it before, I'll say it again... this is the SINGLE most INCREDIBLY fantastic free adventure/RPG/action game I've ever had the pleasure of playing.
If you're coming here for the first time to check out the game... and SOMEHOW this awesome video teaser DOESN'T make you want to play it... do yourself a favor...
CHANGE your mind... download it. It'll blow your balls off--it's that good. :)
Is there any chance you'll be porting this to XBL, PSN, Iphone, Android, etc? It's really an amazing game that I know people would be willing to empty their wallets for. I know it was done in Gamemaker, but I'm 1000% sure you could manage to recreate this in one of those platforms and make a mint...you deserve it.
@bboyforever2002: Also it would be great to play an "HD Remix" of this game....Though it holds up together visually as is...I dunno just putting ideas out there.
@VideoVisionary77 Make sure the music files are either in iji/music or the iji root directory, and you're not running the game from within the zip file. Otherwise, it's a known compatibility problem, sorry.
this game is a true masterpiece!at first it looks unoriginal, but the story gets deeper, more complicated, dramatic and changes depending on how you play.the gameplay is also great because you can do lots of stuff with a few buttons and a pretty good leveling system that changes depending on the difficulty you are in.and all that packed with awesome replay value and countless secrets like the scrambler and the posters.i just hope there will be a sequel to this awesome game dot dot dot
I skipped this game a couple months ago because it looked cheesy (the trailer does not do it justice). Grabbed it a few days ago just for the hell of it, and man I am sad that I didn't play it sooner. Working on an Extreme pacifist run now after my first couple of playthroughs. Such fun and great replay value!
AMAZING game. Absolute must-play for anyone who likes platformers.
Thank you for the effort you put into this and making it for free!
@Ferret5317 I wish I'd left out some parts of the trailer, or at least not used words like "awaken". Eh. :p It's kinda hard to compress the game into two minutes, so I went with the general gameplay.
On one hand, you've got games like Dragon Age II that are rushed out to the point where it's unpolished and lacking. They charge you $60 to play it and then insult your intelligence with its awful writing. And on the other hand, you've got games like Iji which are worked on until they're done. Fun for casual play but there's a depth in it uncommon in a lot of indie games. It's free to play so you expect it to be a quick, fun diversion but it's much more. Iji represents the new standard.
One of the most EPIC platform shooter I have EVER played, trust me I've played almost every single one. I really wish there was a second part. It was just so great that I wanted more.
This was an amazing game. I have to say, this has become a new favorite, even over the few commercial games I own. The story wasn't all that original (did have tweaks in it that still made it interesting), but what really got me was the fun gameplay and the fact that the story actually DOES change throughout depending on how you finish the game. All the detail and bonus bits packed into this game, piled on top of the amazing sounds, music, and gameplay made this a true gem.
@Babb26 Silence! Never mention THAT game again... Now I will have all the nightmares all over again. This game was just insane (I'm talking about gameplay, not story)
@Au0s It is a great Game Maker game, but I'd almost hesitate to classify it as 'best Game Maker game' just because you ought to classify it as 'one of the best games out there', hence transcending the Game Maker class and entering just the games class! ;)
@needo2new I can understand where you're coming from... You work hard getting all your skills/weapons up to a certain level, and then they don't do much against the boss.
It was A OK with me, because getting to the boss was so epic, and the boss was an epic confrontation that made me feel great when i beat him.
That being said, if I hadn't hacked the resonance reflector, i don't know what happens with the boss. Can you not win without a resonance reflector? Any way: Excellent. Fucking. Game.
@reefpirate If you don't have a reflector by the time you get to the boss, one is lying around that you cannot skip, and it won't disappear if you do a Nanofield Reboot. You can also defeat the boss with Attack 10 and 50-67 MPFB shots depending on difficulty level.
@needo2new You're right, the boss could have less HP (with the reflected shots dealing less damage to compensate). The only drawback I can think of is that he wouldn't be very imposing or believable with too little health on his mech. It's supposed to fight armies after all.
The bosses in the game usually requires something other than weapons, to allow them to be beatable with just a Shotgun, but you're right that their health could have been lower to give your weapons more impact.
You CAN use your weapons on the boss. It's just that they will be really weak. Yeah, they are kind of useless, but you can use them anywhere else. Tor is too strong for regular weapons, I think it works well.
The reset thing is not really a cheat. You can find the code IN the game in some secret area. People use it to be tactical. For example, if they think that the next part would be hard to survive, they upgrade their hp stat. It is also used for speed runs.
I hope you know that the best way to beat the boss is to reflect its energy balls. Use the discharger-thingie to reflect.
Also, there is a code that lets you reset your stats, so you can change them to whatever you want. I think everything on HP would be best for the last boss. Look it up.
You have actually created a game that gives Cave Story a challenge in the 'Epic Indie Games' category, and you've made it free. As far as I'm concerned, you are the GOD of Indie games.
I bought Super Smash Bros Brawl at the same time as I downloaded Iji, and while the singleplayer of Brawl was over for me after a week or 2, I'm still playing this game fantiquely after more than a month. Props for creating such a stunningly good game.
heard of this game a while ago, played it a little then, but just finished it last night. can i just say that the final fight against tor is one of the most epic moments in videogame history?
Oh my god I had the music in the trailer stuck in my head on and off for well over a year, and couldn't for the life of me remember where it was from - Mystery solved! Thanks reddit
I feel the same as many of the other posters on here. Iji is one of my favorite games of all time and I would have gladly paid full retail price for it.
This has quickly become one of my favorite games ever. Not only because of the amazing gameplay, weapons system, secrets, and replay-ability, but more because of the huge story and moral base. This game is definetely one of the best games I have ever played, and most assuradly the best GM game out there.
It's so great to look back at this trailer after beating the game a while ago. I can really tell you poured your heart into it.
The music was fantastic, the story was beautiful and well-paced, the dialog was extremely well written(I'm very, very impressed at how good you are at taking the mental perspective of the different characters), the animations are smooth and look great, the monster designs rock and the combat system is engaging, strategic and fun.
@AssOnAPlate187 Nah. I liked the vocabulary and sentence structure. Wasn't perfect but I wouldn't have expected exceptional speaking skills from Dan, he's basically just some random kid.
Plot pacing could do with some work but that's not exactly a rare complaint with games. Choosing the balance between plot and gameplay is a common problem mostly because it's such a personal preference.
This game is better than most games i have ever played, I didn't go to bed till 2 and the story line was awesome, I also like how the credits show you the future. This game should be made into a game for like xBox or PS3 with 3D graphics, that would be sick.
Finally decided to give this game a chance a few nights ago. Let's just say I didn't go to sleep that night. I can safely say now, that Iji is definitely my favorite freeware game ever. And I haven't even gotten through with or unlocked everything in it. (note to self: find out what that awesome blast move is at 1:52)
@xSilentKhaosx It's one of the game's 3 "secret" skills you can discover by reading the right logfile. Retribution, IIRC. You can only do it when you've been knocked down.
I downloaded this game a few days ago and played it through normal, hard, extreme almost non-stop since then, working on ultimortal now.. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this is the best freeware game I've played bar none, both in atmosphere/storyline and gameplay. It's also got multiple outcomes/paths to take which helps replay value enormously (just finished my first pacifist run on hard ^^)
@megamarsvin I think I obtained almost everything in this game within a week of play, I was just having too much fun! Kudos to Daniel for delivering such a masterpiece, and I hope that in 10 years or less, he starts seriously considering to make a sequel...
Also, if you liked this game, I recommend trying Cave Story, another legendary freeware indie game made entirely by one Japanese fellow!
Daniel, thank you so much for this game! I LOVE it! It's easily one of the few genuinely mature games out there, and I mean that in more aspects than one!
Also, kudos to those who made the kick-ass soundtrack!
And finally, necessary plug-in:Cave Story is also one of the best indie games OF ALL TIME! Play it! Download it on the Wii or take the original freeware PC version!
This is what all GM games should be like. Interesting, exciting, with awesome plot line. It's just...i don't know. Last time i feeled something like this, is when i finished Metal Gear Solid. Thanks for excelent game!
@Muvlonion Really? You're going to compare Iji to Jets n' Guns? Average shmupp with full team vs extremely creative and unique action platformer from a single person?
JnG was good, maybe even a bit more enjoyable, but Iji's in a whole different league in terms of accomplishment.
prity good trailor
but it dosnt even show half of how awesome this game is!!!!!!!!!

One of the best Game Maker made games out there, I am really shocked with how great it is. If you havn't downloaded it already, by all means DO!
Au0s 11 months ago
@Au0s It is a great Game Maker game, but I'd almost hesitate to classify it as 'best Game Maker game' just because you ought to classify it as 'one of the best games out there', hence transcending the Game Maker class and entering just the games class! ;)
reefpirate 10 months ago
@needo2new I can understand where you're coming from... You work hard getting all your skills/weapons up to a certain level, and then they don't do much against the boss.
It was A OK with me, because getting to the boss was so epic, and the boss was an epic confrontation that made me feel great when i beat him.
That being said, if I hadn't hacked the resonance reflector, i don't know what happens with the boss. Can you not win without a resonance reflector? Any way: Excellent. Fucking. Game.
reefpirate 11 months ago
@reefpirate If you don't have a reflector by the time you get to the boss, one is lying around that you cannot skip, and it won't disappear if you do a Nanofield Reboot. You can also defeat the boss with Attack 10 and 50-67 MPFB shots depending on difficulty level.
Ultimortal 11 months ago
@reefpirate If you don't have a resonance reflector, the game will give you one right before General Tor.
RiflemanIII 10 months ago
Goddamned beautiful game, is all I can say. Just beat it on Hard difficulty, and want to go back for more.
Classic of the 2000 era, if you ask me.
reefpirate 11 months ago
@needo2new You're right, the boss could have less HP (with the reflected shots dealing less damage to compensate). The only drawback I can think of is that he wouldn't be very imposing or believable with too little health on his mech. It's supposed to fight armies after all.
The bosses in the game usually requires something other than weapons, to allow them to be beatable with just a Shotgun, but you're right that their health could have been lower to give your weapons more impact.
Ultimortal 11 months ago
@needo2new
You CAN use your weapons on the boss.
It is also used for speed runs.
blasphemymaster 11 months ago
@needo2new
I hope you know that the best way to beat the boss is to reflect its energy balls. Use the discharger-thingie to reflect.
Also, there is a code that lets you reset your stats, so you can change them to whatever you want. I think everything on HP would be best for the last boss. Look it up.

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Four years seems short after playing it.
blasphemymaster 1 year ago
Really interesting game, but god's sake get someone else to write the story for you! Your vocabulary, plot pacing and sentence structure is terrible!
YO THIS IS DAN, YA BRO. GUESS WHAT I FIGURED EVERY SINGLE THING OUT SO GET GOING.
IMMA ONLY SAY THIS ONCE - WHAT YOU DO, WHO YOU KILL OR WHO YOU SPARE, NOTHING WILL GET PAST THE TASEN.
...IT DOESN'T MAKE YOU EVIL OR ANYTHING...
TASEN LOG - SUBJECT: HUMANS. >:(((((
IJI GO REASON WITH THE UNREASONABLE BELLIGERENTS.
AssOnAPlate187 1 year ago

Also, kudos to those who made the kick-ass soundtrack!
And finally, necessary plug-in:Cave Story is also one of the best indie games OF ALL TIME! Play it! Download it on the Wii or take the original freeware PC version!
