@garciavelert King of England,he was never crowned king of England, you silly billy !! anyhow dont matter, cos we sunk his Amada, and Drake nicked all his gold !!
@AthCliath23 You know this song was written for a music hall by a guy called Jack Judge, whose parents were from County Mayo and whose grandparents were from Tipperary? He himself was born in England and lived there all his life. Just one of the millions who share a link in these islands. 200,000 Irish fought for the United Kingdom voluntarily in WW1, humming this with their English, Scottish and Welsh comrades in arms.
My dad who served in the US Army WWII in North Africa along side of the British. He said that the British soliders sang this song all the time. It was a rallying song for them.
@MegaMushface pathetic brits? as a nation we have done more for the world than the irish ever will...and before you start i have irish blood - 60% of peopl in england have irish blood of some degree in them. and southern irish catholics still join the british army you sad little cunt - and much "irish" folk music has it's roots in england...you twat
This song was used as a tool by the British gov to recruit Irish RCs to fight in WWI and at the time they promised the Irish Catholics Home Rule (which they had no intention of granting). A significant number of Irish Catholics (I am Protestant but give credit to these people) fought and died, they won more Victory Crosses than anyone, and conducted themselves admirably even while the British gov send the Black and Tans to Ireland to control the population by employing rape and murder.
@rapier0954 Im glad to see your point of view, I would be Catholic and the poor soldiers that came back from this war beliving they were fighting for Ireland were mistrusted and seen as traitors by republicans. The south then try to hide its efforts in ww1 and ww2 even tho there was more people from the south joined than the north in both wars."Including Irish in the UK from the south already" The only way is peace.
@IrishHitman79 In one way Wolfe Tone had a good idea (I think he was a Protestant) in getting everyone to pull together in the 1798 rebellion. Don't get me wrong I'm not advocating any violence, but I feel that if everyone across Ireland would pull together this could be a better place including economically. Not just the republic is having a hard time economically, the UK is about to have its credit rating downgraded too. People need to pull together in a fair democratic way.
@rapier0954 Im sure you can agree the RIRA/UVF so on are all gansters now drugs and crime... I know the burden N.Ireland is on the English tax payer is huge also Scotland is to. I think N.Ireland will move on in time maybe a long long time but at some stage. Your right he was a Protestant and the founder of the IRB. Sadly like all wars religion was the ace card used, and not just all Irishmen looking for Irish freedom like it used to be it became a religious war. Anyway peace is the only way.
@rapier0954 I am Irish and can tell you Home Rule was a done deal in 1914 & even (Half English) Patrick Pearce's mother could not see the point of the 1916 raising. People think the Irish MP's were on the way to Euston Station in 1914 & were tricked into waiting but organising a separate Irish administration continued throughout the war. Look on the Dublin web site & you will be told the HQ of the Irish civil service was "fortunately" completed in 1922.
@freebeerfordworkers I think the fly in the ointment was Carson and his cronies in the North and without him on board there was a problem regardless of what was on paper. There are pictures of Protestants in the North holding placards threatening to fight for the Kaiser if what was on paper was fully implemented across the island. They never wanted island wide Home Rule where they would be a minority. Talking out of both sides of the mouth is a Brit gov specialty.
@rapier0954 Look at any serious Irish History book to confirm that a separate Irish Administration existed for the Free State to take over. It was not a matter of "if" there would be A Dublin Government but who would run it and what would be is relationship with Britain. On her recent (I would say pointless) visit to Dublin the Queen commemorated the laying of the foundation stone of the new Irish (home rule) government buildings by her grandfather in 1911.
@rapier0954 To show how these political changes have to be planned in years advance. In the early 1970's it was thought Scotland would vote for "Home Rule" but did not. Even so the old Edinburgh Royal High School was converted into a parliament building for them BEFORE the vote but was not needed.
It's not uncommon to hear American troops singing this tune, especially if their unit has a high percentage of Irish-Americans. It's a lively, spirited song that makes the blood circulate a little faster. I might point out that we don't conciously think "Irish-American".....they're just plain Americans.
@RAGPUD Brilliant! Thanks for the best laugh this week BTW this week is the centenary of its composition/performance and there was an item about Jack Judge on the regional TV news.
The belly aching never ends now that the multicultural whiners list grows longer. Everything in the least patriotic or historic is grist for the mill for some poor "offended" loser. If you are offended by the British being proud of being British then you don't belong in Britain. It's that simple.

@Catmingo1 My pleasure. I might add that Franz (later Francis) was born a Count, later created a Prince and finally a Duke of Teck. and was related to the royal house of the Kingdom of Wuerttemberg. Though of German background, hewas born in the Austrian Empire in that part now called Croatia. He became an officer in the Austrian army but went to Britain in 1866, where he became an officer, rising to the rank of Major General. Interesting person.

@bigjohn697791 Ireland was never part of Great Britain but we had the "United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland to day we have simply UK GB + N.IRL."
@brosnaboy I stand corrected Mr @brosnaboy however was ther a act of union back in the 17-16 hunderds thats why the union jack has st patricks cross on it i.e. the red x on a white background later used by unionists
@bigjohn697791 yes you are correct ireland was netual but something like 100,000 irish men if i remember my numbers correctly founght in the british army and then there where those who joined the american army not in as large numbers and the spainish civil war irish brigdes
@bigjohn697791 Not sure of the numbers but they were considerable, one told me they had lockers for Irish servicemen at British ferry ports were they could keep their uniforms when going on leave. Amusingly an English guy in the RN said when they went into Londonderry/Derry to refuel they would go over the border for un-rationed meals. They had to go in civilian clothes but few had any so they shared what they had. A suit & cap did for 3 sailors. 1 wore the Jacket 1 the trousers 1 the cap!
@cyn9996667 Question are you English-British? if so, number one you are missusing the word Hun like most English peple and second if you are English-British then you are an Anglo-Saxon like most English-British people which is a GERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@swissnor You know who liked the term 'hun'? Kaiser Wilhelm, he thought it made the German People sound fierce, he took quite the shine to it. Also, do not go down the road of, "Oh you are Anglo-Saxon so you are German." Well everyone on earth is African. Therefore that argument is null my strong, African brother.
@AjCassells that may be so about the Kaiser, but my point still stands most of the English, 25% of "New Welsh" and a good number of Scot's, a very small number of Irish and many others where the English-British settled are Anglo-Saxon's.
@AjCassells also before W.W.1. The British and the German's especially the English had the biggest cultural exchanges between each other then any another countries in the World. Britian and Germany had the biggest amount trade and commerce between each other then any another countries in the World and Britian and Germany had the biggest scientific exchange between each other then any another countries in the World.
@AjCassells As for Africa, yes we all come from Africa, but the points I made in my earlier comments had nothing to do with Africa. Oh and by the way Black's differ from White's and Asian's by 2% this has been confirmed by scientist and was on B.B.C. News and Channel 4 News among others.
@AjCassells You should be proud of you Germanic roots, without the German's, the Dutch-Flemmish and the Scandinavia's there wwould be no Britian or England. The Germanic Raace is best and most superior of all races.
@Derpasaurusrex1 She has German ancestry, but she is Not German. She was born in Britain, her parents were born in Britain, and all four of her grandparents were born in Britain. She did have a Danish great grandmother in Queen Alexandra. So, how many generations do you want to go back? If you are of Angle and/or Saxon background, then you are German too.
@FRAGIORGIO1 You forgot, dear heart, her G/Grandfather, Prince Albert, a German, who was married to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, and her Grandmother, Queen Mary (who was, before her marriage, Princess May of Treck (Sp?) ). Just thought I would help you fill in some of the gaps. : )
@Catmingo1 Prince Albert was her Great Great Grandfather, and Queen Mary (AKA Princess Mary of Teck) was British born, which is why I said her grandparents were British. You have to go back quite a bit to say she had some German blood. So she had a great grandmother (Queen Alexandra) who was Danish and the father of Queen Mary was German, although his wife was a member of the British Royal Family. Of the Queen's eight great grandparents, only two were not British (1 Dane & 1 German).
@Catmingo1 Prince Albert was the Queen's Great Great Grandfather! Of her eight great grandparents, only two were not British, and they were Queen Alexandra, who was Danish, and the Prince/Duke of Teck (member of the Royal Family of Wuerttemberg) who was German, but became British. That is a pretty good British background for a "German" Queen !
@TacoJFK3226 Yes, so it's a long way away brah. (Lol, the first lines of this song is about an Irishman who comes to London, and although amazed by the shit, misses his "Irish mollyo" and then he cant spell and is drunk + a thousand other stereotypes)
@TacoJFK3226 This song was written in 1912, and at that time all of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. But in the early '20s Ireland gained its Independence the song was so well known by all Britain that they adopted it as their own.
@soulofthenorth A British man from Stalybridge in Tameside named Jack Judge, it was made as hit mate made a bet with him stating he couldn't write a song and the sheet music in 24 hours, Jack won and so the song was born
Probably one of the best known songs in the English language; we used to sing this when I was in the army, and later even at university! It was always sung especially enthusiastically when the beer was freely flowing. Everyone seems to know the words; it’s cheerful, so people like it.
Lol! This is what my grandfather used to sing on long trips. What is so hilarious is that we are both czech. I didn't understand him much and though he's singing something about Mary. Oh dear.

@boxtree132 What the "Irish tosser" is about is this: The song is Irish and begins:
Up to might London came an Irishman one day
He thought the streets were paved with gold and everyone looked gay
Riding down through Piccadilly, he landed in Leicester Square
Then Paddy got excited and he shouted to his mare:
Chorus.... It's a long way to Tipperary. It's a long way to go........
Does that explain what the "Irish tosser" was about?

@cyn9996667 We will when you go back to wherever your ancestors originated from and give the US back to the native American Indians, how about that?
Noxolia 2 months ago
@cyn9996667 Question are you English-British? if so, number one you are missusing the word Hun like most English peple and second if you are English-British then you are an Anglo-Saxon like most English-British people which is a GERMAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
swissnor 2 months ago
@swissnor You know who liked the term 'hun'? Kaiser Wilhelm, he thought it made the German People sound fierce, he took quite the shine to it. Also, do not go down the road of, "Oh you are Anglo-Saxon so you are German." Well everyone on earth is African. Therefore that argument is null my strong, African brother.
AjCassells 2 months ago
@AjCassells that may be so about the Kaiser, but my point still stands most of the English, 25% of "New Welsh" and a good number of Scot's, a very small number of Irish and many others where the English-British settled are Anglo-Saxon's.
swissnor 2 months ago
@AjCassells also before W.W.1. The British and the German's especially the English had the biggest cultural exchanges between each other then any another countries in the World. Britian and Germany had the biggest amount trade and commerce between each other then any another countries in the World and Britian and Germany had the biggest scientific exchange between each other then any another countries in the World.
swissnor 2 months ago
@AjCassells As for Africa, yes we all come from Africa, but the points I made in my earlier comments had nothing to do with Africa. Oh and by the way Black's differ from White's and Asian's by 2% this has been confirmed by scientist and was on B.B.C. News and Channel 4 News among others.
swissnor 2 months ago
@AjCassells You should be proud of you Germanic roots, without the German's, the Dutch-Flemmish and the Scandinavia's there wwould be no Britian or England. The Germanic Raace is best and most superior of all races.

Derpasaurusrex1 3 months ago
@Derpasaurusrex1 She has German ancestry, but she is Not German. She was born in Britain, her parents were born in Britain, and all four of her grandparents were born in Britain. She did have a Danish great grandmother in Queen Alexandra. So, how many generations do you want to go back? If you are of Angle and/or Saxon background, then you are German too.
FRAGIORGIO1 2 months ago
@FRAGIORGIO1 You forgot, dear heart, her G/Grandfather, Prince Albert, a German, who was married to Her Majesty, Queen Victoria, and her Grandmother, Queen Mary (who was, before her marriage, Princess May of Treck (Sp?) ). Just thought I would help you fill in some of the gaps. : )
Catmingo1 2 months ago
@Catmingo1 Prince Albert was her Great Great Grandfather, and Queen Mary (AKA Princess Mary of Teck) was British born, which is why I said her grandparents were British. You have to go back quite a bit to say she had some German blood. So she had a great grandmother (Queen Alexandra) who was Danish and the father of Queen Mary was German, although his wife was a member of the British Royal Family. Of the Queen's eight great grandparents, only two were not British (1 Dane & 1 German).
FRAGIORGIO1 2 months ago
@Catmingo1 Prince Albert was the Queen's Great Great Grandfather! Of her eight great grandparents, only two were not British, and they were Queen Alexandra, who was Danish, and the Prince/Duke of Teck (member of the Royal Family of Wuerttemberg) who was German, but became British. That is a pretty good British background for a "German" Queen !

@TacoJFK3226 This song was written in 1912, and at that time all of Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. But in the early '20s Ireland gained its Independence the song was so well known by all Britain that they adopted it as their own.

Probably one of the best known songs in the English language; we used to sing this when I was in the army, and later even at university! It was always sung especially enthusiastically when the beer was freely flowing. Everyone seems to know the words; it’s cheerful, so people like it.
RattytheSecond 10 months ago
Lol! This is what my grandfather used to sing on long trips. What is so hilarious is that we are both czech. I didn't understand him much and though he's singing something about Mary. Oh dear.
