I miss the old music style from this game. Wish they kept the ending music for gears 3 ending. Would have made it feel like home. But i guess i'm playing this again. THUMBS UP IF YOUR WATCHING THIS IN 2012!

I am not sure if I am correct, but I think the war started because the locust want to live above. The Serans caused some locust to become mutated (lambent), and the normal locust want to get away from them by moving to the land above.

@Alligamer the humans didnt cause the lambent, but you are right they want to get on the surface to get away from the far superior lambent locust and killing the humans is the only way they can think of to live on the surface

@siiver7 The locust lived in the planet the entire time. The humans that migrated to this planet (Sera) have been using the planets resources (Emulsion). There was a civil war (the pendulum wars) over the resources, and at the end, the COG won the war. Shortly after that war, the locust horde came out of the ground and killed a chunk of people (Emergence Day). Its not totally clear why the Locust have come up and started the war, but this is their home planet, so probably because invaders came?
