Well, unless you have face that situation no one can criticize, takin the word killing goes beyond that, it goes to the point that you kill a person and this fact is going to be with you for the rest of your life. This guy may deal with it, but balsa cannot hold on her back more deaths, i wouldnt be able to do it neither. Is not that easy to kill someone and keep going in your life as nothing happen, even the real warriors were not able to do it, even though that was their job.
Although I do respect the martial arts animes that are indeed good, I don't believe that you should be calling Balsa as a piece of crap. Balsa is a 30 year old woman who takes upon the job as a bodyguard. Her attitude towards killing her enemies actually came from her past... which you would have to watch the anime to know. Please do not think of this anime as crap without actually watching it first and understanding Balsa's motive behind her "I cannot kill anyone else."
@danish211 I can understand Sword of the Stranger as both it and Guardian of the Sacred Spirit are great for their action and plot. My issue with Sword of the Stranger however is that the main character's development goes no where. He stops killing only to end up killing again and it treats it as if it were an accomplishment. 1 step forward and two steps back is not something you glorify and that was one of it's major flaws.
Frankly it takes a lot more control, skill, and courage to not kill someone. Anyone can kill someone who gets in their way, it takes a truly phenomenal individual to get into a fight with live weapons and not only come out on top but to intentionally avoid causing a life threatening injury. You normally don't see that in action oriented anime, or done as well as it is done here.
You're entitled to your opinion, but don't bash a character for doing things differently than you would.
@CeruleanRogue: Wel, in truth, he does have a point - not killing people who try to kill you IS rather illogical. It is something that makes protecting the rest much more difficult for you.
However, sometimes what is the smart thing to do and what is the right thing to do are not the same thing, and sometimes the harder path is worth it ;)
i dislike many slice of life animes shows of the the type you are refereeing but i perfer my martial arts animes not to have lame pacifist bullshit in it. shows like fist of the north star, sword of the stranger, ninja scroll, blade of the immortal. dont get me wrong.
@danish211 I understand you. I know her atitude of not killing her enemies is very cliche and stupid. But apart of that, shes one of the best anime character ive ever seen
honestly... i do believe the whole idea about her not wanting to kill murderers is a bit stupid. but then again, there wouldn't be a story if that wasn't the case.
it's just that, realistically speaking, you probably wouldn't have a choice. that's the only fault i can find in this anime, honestly. everything else is just superb.
@thatSaori Well the good guys are like that in EVERY anime - never kill.....which I find stupid as well, they usually defeat the killer and then he realizes what he's done is bad and starts being a good guy ....which is even more stupid... The only different anime/manga I've read in that aspect is Berserk - the main hero has no problem whatsoever with killing the guys that attack him :) Oh and the Berserk anime is good though it's old, but the manga is the best I've read and it's still ongoing.
THis anime proved that you dont need powerups and attacks that can splits mountain in half to have a great action anime...I loved how they didnt had any 'special moves' in this anime
Seirei no moribito has truly some of the best animation when it comes to fighting. i hate it when anime have horrible fighting animation like where a person fights doing the same attack over and over again 1000 times and the opponent saying '' you got amazing skillls''.
I am mostly tired of the continuous of screaming, yelling, shouting and a huge portion of crying like a baby. (Cough Cough) Naruto, Dragonball Z, and Bleach. >_>
Then there are summoning, blah blah blah, who cares about that? We need the good ol Balsa to teach them a lesson about true fighting.
The same philosophy that ruined an otherwise amazing anime: Rurouni Kenshin. All lives aren't equal-a cancer researcher's life has more value than a rapists-and some things and some people are worth killing for-friends, family, etc. The protagonist in Sword of a Stranger struggled with the same problems as the heroine in this anime. And in the end came to the conclusion that yes, some things are worth killing for. It was all the more better for it and this one could have been too.
I don't understand your point. You argue that it's weak point is moral relativism, then proceed to claim that it's statement of objective morality (killing is bad - no matter whom) is an example of this... then state that killing is acceptable (even noble) given the circumstance. But that in itself requires a relativistic view, since your determination of worth is dependent on varying internal and external criteria.
Also, pacifism is not defined by one's willingness to kill.
Don't get me wrong, there is quite a bit of moral relativism in this show... exemplified by the fact that there are no villains. Even the monsters at the end are rationalized as simply doing what all creatures do, feeding. However, Balsa and her views on life are not an example of this.
Besides, morality is a social concept which is more or less relative, though it's source is neurological and has correlates in other social animals. There is an objective component, but it's muddied.
I was arguing her Normative relativistic view was the weak point in my opinion. I agree that my counter argument was also relativistic ( I sometimes fail to realize the flaws in my own arguments when I'm especially passionate about something), but in the Descriptive relativistic view. By not killing her opponents, she's essentially tolerating their differing views and allowing them to live to kill someone else. Though I concede that may be stretching it just a bit.
I had high hopes that this would be as good as Sword of A Stranger, Ghost In The Shell, Cowboy Bebop and Princess Mononoke. As far as production value, art style and fight animation goes it achieved it. Unfortunately, it fell apart with the story. It suffers from the same new-age pacifistic, moralistic relativism that plagues Japanese animation. The 'all lives are equal and precious so I'll never kill again; but I'll carry around a lethal weapon and use it to fight' philosophy.
If you actually watch the whole series. She never killed him at all. He survived the blow. Infact Balsa followed that vow to a T. During the whole series she didnt kill ANYONE.
I never said she killed the guy in this video. I was in fact criticizing the fact that she didn't. True she never killed anyone during the series but she admitted to racking up quite a body count before the events of this series. The events in this series cover the period in her life after she decided that all lives are equal and sacred. But yet she still wields a weapon designed to kill.
There is no such thing as a non-lethal weapon. Anything can kill you if use it properly. It make more sense to say not to kill when you have a spear then a katana. A spear is more adaptable and it can be use defensivly more than a sword. Again a weapon is a weapon, it depends on how the user wields it, but whats common about all weapons they ARE meant to kill.
The staff and the baton are both considered non-lethal weapons. Yes, they can both be used to kill someone but that was not their initial purpose (non-lethal defense and riot control); and it is considerably more difficult to kill someone with a staff than with a sword or spear. My point was that if she was so adamant about never killing again then carrying around a weapon that can kill easily (spear) makes no sense. Remove the spear tip and you've got a non-lethal staff.
Ah true, mmm my only guess why she would keep the spear tip is because shes use to its..... weight? I mean she trained with a spear to the point she can not kill a person, any other weapon might feel....awkward. But I see your point, but then we wouldnt have those nice metal to metal clings. XD
@Tallwhitemocha The weapon as a whole contains significant value to Balsa. Whether she thought of using a more non-lethal weapon or not, I doubt she would have relinquished the spear either way considering it was also a memento of Jiguro.
@Tallwhitemocha I believe her job as a bodyguard comes into why she uses a spear. Not because it's a more lethal weapon, but because would-be criminals know it's a lethal weapon. See someone with a staff, yes, they might know how to use it, but it's a staff. Not as intimidating. Plus, staffs are typically made of wood, which would be easier to break, and would have a different center of gravity than a spear, which is what she was trained in her whole life from a child. Were batons invented yet?
@Tallwhitemocha She keeps the spear tip as a deterrent for lesser threats that might come their way. Although not mentioned or shown in the story perhaps also for hunting.
i've never seen or heard of this anime before. it looks awzzum. is " Seirei no Moribito" the only title it has or is there another one for it in the states? i wanna try and find it.
I literally made Balsa as my fav. female warrior after seeing episode 13, Sailor Jupiter was my favorite out of all female chracters from any anime, but she's now my favorite female soldier with magic powers, but Balsa she is just so vicious, she's smart, cool, & stong, and after seeing her in this fight I literally dubbed her the female Battousai, since she and Kenshin are very much alike with their desire not to take a life, but that killer ability that they restrain inside. Balsa gets 5/5 *.
this may sound stupid but I only watched english version up to episode 10 and I can't find any other episodes japanese version or english so where online can I watch them for free? I agree Naruto is stupid.
for fucksake watch the entire anime, don't go on youtube watching a SCENE of probably one of the most badass episodes ever, a tiger you say? WATCH IT FROM THE BEGINNING! Serei is one of most underrated animes ever, such a gem man.
"Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
Balsa had stepped to the edge of the abyss, the edge of becoming a monster, and turned back. This guy was forcing her back to that precipice, and the danger came not from the monster she was fighting... but from becoming the monster, the tiger, herself.
I like shows like this. It's not all action all the time, but when it is, Jesus, it's amazing. A lot of movies/shows, not just anime in particular, forget the number one rule for writing action into a plot: Don't write an action sequence just for the sake of having it in there. Write a suspense scene that requires action to resolve. That mainstream crap (like, uh, Naruto) was starting to piss me off.
Its anime like this that keep the art from becoming stale and stagnant. Its also why I tend to lean toward non-mainstream anime and with mainstream anime I just keep to the manga portion. Its less prone to filler and leans more toward filling in the cracks.
Yeah, this scene is amazing, and I love the tiger metaphor coming to life :-)
@Ozma00X Exactly my friend, in addition to what you said I liked this series too because it's way different than those mainstream crap. It is well balanced, and yet, it doesn't follow those repetitive routines of most popular animes. Watching this anime made me feel something special there, I wish I could see more creative animes like this one.
@Ozma00X Don't insult Naruto. Action is part of the main plot. It's an action show not a suspense or mystery show, you're comparing two completely different types of shows. Nobody wants to see supensful type things on a show that's all action just like people don't want to see people talk their differences out in a kung fu movie. I mean no disrespect, but I can't help but defend it when people try to talk about the show. For what it is it's mostly well written.
I never seen this anime, so I was wondering if there was some reason for it. Just as in star ocean there is a girl who looks 4 yrs old, but is really 15. I understand what you mean about different voices, but that is a bit deep don'tcha think? lol.
I've met women whose voices are deep like that. It's just odd to see a women in anime who isn't a giggly voiced, high pitched and blondeish. She's also 29 years old and not a 14 year old kid. That and she's rather pissed at this guy.
@LadyKaliska Its really the fact that she's an older woman who's the main character of an anime that pulled me in. I love it that she also has a deeper voice, not the typical high-pitched (not that I don't like the typical stuff, its just a breath of fresh air to hear something completely different). Love it!
@DVitamin I do to. I love the way she was characterized, and felt that the voice actor was perfect for her overall. (In the Japanese subbed, I haven't watched it in DUB) And I honestly wish there were more main characters like her in anime.
It isn't that type of series. the fighting doesn't drive the story, it's merely apart of it. very refreshing alternative to the "action and only action" driven anime out there.
I don't use profanity often, but oh my gawd, Balsa is the SHIT! Go Balsa! *SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* When I first saw this episode, I honestly thought she killed the guy. *SPOILER END*
When he said her increased ferocity made killing her more meaningful, did he mean the abilities she displayed made her a worthwhile deathmatch, or that by fighting back, she justified his intent to kill her?
The whole episode was her trying to evade him while protecting the teacher and her escort who he vowed to kill in revenge of her killing his client a few years back. She made it clear to him earlier in the episode that she wasn't going to kill him or fight him but wouldn't allow him to take another life. Hence his satisfaction when she seemingly relinquished that promise to avert his violent advances.
Actually it was a reference to a scene earlier in the episode, where a woman told Balsa that to give into the lust of combat would make her a feirce and unfriendly as a Tiger more less...
@fatcatnaps Symbolism
TheVelvetRoom 1 year ago
@fatcatnaps It's a visual metaphor: for the first time since she took her vow of no killing, she released the killer within, went on the offensive.
NevanImranTheCambion 1 year ago
@NevanImranTheCambion

@Sinuev1 how pretentious :)
NevanImranTheCambion 1 year ago
@Sinuev1 finally someone who understands ~ but how does one return from the abyss ! REPENTANCE ??
FranFFXII 9 months ago
@fatcatnaps
Anyway and according to the things dahuman said before, balsa was told the legend about the tiger from the woman wich ran down the hill.
It's a manifestation from the meaning this episode includes.
EvilEtna 1 year ago
@fatcatnaps also the tiger repersents aggression, so she was switching defending to full on fight
moonshinewitch404 10 months ago
@fatcatnaps She made a promise to herself that she wouldn't kill anymore people.

wolfs reign but like tiger version ?
Lionspride18 2 years ago
It's more of a metaphor for her fighting spirit than a real transformation into a tiger.

Seirei No moribito is an anime masterpiece. Equals to myazaki films.

Ozma00X 3 years ago 56
@Ozma00X
Its anime like this that keep the art from becoming stale and stagnant. Its also why I tend to lean toward non-mainstream anime and with mainstream anime I just keep to the manga portion. Its less prone to filler and leans more toward filling in the cracks.
Yeah, this scene is amazing, and I love the tiger metaphor coming to life :-)
DVitamin 1 year ago
@Ozma00X EXACTLY!!! (I didn't like Natuto that much, either.)
princessthyemis 8 months ago
@Ozma00X Exactly my friend, in addition to what you said I liked this series too because it's way different than those mainstream crap. It is well balanced, and yet, it doesn't follow those repetitive routines of most popular animes. Watching this anime made me feel something special there, I wish I could see more creative animes like this one.
hanxopx 8 months ago
@Ozma00X Don't insult Naruto. Action is part of the main plot. It's an action show not a suspense or mystery show, you're comparing two completely different types of shows. Nobody wants to see supensful type things on a show that's all action just like people don't want to see people talk their differences out in a kung fu movie. I mean no disrespect, but I can't help but defend it when people try to talk about the show. For what it is it's mostly well written.

@Ozma00X Thank you! And finally something that has "good fighting" without having to resort to crazy powers to make it epic.

Why is her voice so deep?

cuz she's GAR

skillzgone2waste
It just is.
Not all females have distinctively soft voices, just like some men do not have deep masculine voices.
Personally I think it suits here character perfectly.
Katzblager 3 years ago 16
I never seen this anime, so I was wondering if there was some reason for it. Just as in star ocean there is a girl who looks 4 yrs old, but is really 15. I understand what you mean about different voices, but that is a bit deep don'tcha think? lol.
skillzgone2waste 3 years ago
I've met women whose voices are deep like that. It's just odd to see a women in anime who isn't a giggly voiced, high pitched and blondeish. She's also 29 years old and not a 14 year old kid. That and she's rather pissed at this guy.
LadyKaliska 3 years ago 75
@LadyKaliska Its really the fact that she's an older woman who's the main character of an anime that pulled me in. I love it that she also has a deeper voice, not the typical high-pitched (not that I don't like the typical stuff, its just a breath of fresh air to hear something completely different). Love it!
DVitamin 1 year ago
@DVitamin I do to. I love the way she was characterized, and felt that the voice actor was perfect for her overall. (In the Japanese subbed, I haven't watched it in DUB) And I honestly wish there were more main characters like her in anime.
LadyKaliska 1 year ago
@DVitamin
I rather have her than those high pitched girls.

I have a fairly deep voice for a 21 year old woman, so i am gonna be biased and say no. XD

what episode was this?
sweetkisses900 3 years ago
Even though the battle scenes are impressive, there wasn't that much "physical" action in Seirei no Moribito like some would assume.
Oh yeah, btw... Balsa is awesome.
CKbdawg 3 years ago 2
It isn't that type of series. the fighting doesn't drive the story, it's merely apart of it. very refreshing alternative to the "action and only action" driven anime out there.
LCsaint22 3 years ago 13
I agree. Though I like action, impressive animation and plot take precedence. Take Mushi Shi for example...

I don't use profanity often, but oh my gawd, Balsa is the SHIT! Go Balsa! *SPOILER* *SPOILER* *SPOILER* When I first saw this episode, I honestly thought she killed the guy. *SPOILER END*

This is why Balsa is one the coolest female Characters of all time.
She's right up there with Yoko from Twelve Kingdoms!
Kasumitora 3 years ago 7
Balsa-san is a magnificant fighter, watching her in battle never leads to boredom.
Jspgmdzo 3 years ago 4
I'd say both.
iSquarez 3 years ago
When he said her increased ferocity made killing her more meaningful, did he mean the abilities she displayed made her a worthwhile deathmatch, or that by fighting back, she justified his intent to kill her?
Rhiorrha 3 years ago
The whole episode was her trying to evade him while protecting the teacher and her escort who he vowed to kill in revenge of her killing his client a few years back. She made it clear to him earlier in the episode that she wasn't going to kill him or fight him but wouldn't allow him to take another life. Hence his satisfaction when she seemingly relinquished that promise to avert his violent advances.
Tetradotoxin 3 years ago
Im not really sure, but "Tiger" is a way of battling like, relentless striking and such.
iSquarez 3 years ago
Actually it was a reference to a scene earlier in the episode, where a woman told Balsa that to give into the lust of combat would make her a feirce and unfriendly as a Tiger more less...
